On the day of my creation, I fell in love with education. And overcoming all frustration, a teacher I became.

^ You don't have to agree, but I hope you can understand at least where I'm coming from and see why I think making topic on it like that was potentially problematic. At least I try to explain my thinking, and I don't hold it against you. And sorry, that came out wrong about trying not to be insensitive. I didn't mean to tell you how sensitive you should be. It's something I consider for myself, and of course different people have different yardsticks and perspectives. I respect and accept that. Heck, many people think us Canadians way too polite and apologise way too much.
Yeah. EDIT: Now that it's off the active topics/ latest forum posts list and so not as visible, I have decided to unhide the topic. CLICK It's locked but I do feel bad commonly when hiding people's topics and posts. I have had posts which I put a lot of time and thought into hidden when a topic was hidden, and was not too pleased. Edited by Logan - April 18 2024 at 14:32 |

Deaths of people who have fallen from social grace is tough. I recall saying that Phil Spector was a recording and production genius without mourning his death and caught some backlash for it. As if his being a murderer somehow diminished his past artistic skills.

^Right. Let's remember, Hitler was also artistic. And John Wayne Gacy like to dress up as a clown to make kids laugh. I think I'll continue to view them all as monsters if that's ok with everyone.Edited by JD - April 18 2024 at 14:41 |

^^ I recall that to some extent. I think you handled it well. There are lots whose deaths I would not mourn but I still might recognise accomplishments they made. For me, it is kind of being sensitive to others, and expectations, in how you express yourself while at the same time being sincere and sharing your genuine feelings. Whatever the balance is, and even should we try to be tactful, we can often offend people, and that's okay (I even favour causing offence in various cases). :)

Putin and the butchers who slaughtered and burned babies on October 7th, have families who may love them. Do they deserve respect?

Speaking for myself, of course, I don't think they deserve respect. I would say disdain. I think respect is something to be earned.

Dickie Betts of the Allman Brothers died at the age of 80. Wonderful guitarist and songwriter. What a band that was.

That's not the point! You deserve a classy behavior! Progarchives is not a tabloid. Why would the subject justify you acting so immature? Is OJ gonna read your post posthumously? On a Progressie Rock forum? haha This is one of the things I hate about online sociopolitical talk. It's that unnecessary showmanship. Edited by Hrychu - April 18 2024 at 18:08 |

at someone in this thread is on point... figures it would be you Greg. Great video.. sure you've seen it but if you haven't sure you'd appreciate A lot of greatness about Dickey in this. Shame that it Duane going early for the world to that that as great as Duane was, one of the greatest of all American guitarists.. Dickey was right with him and Dylan recognized it as well. RIP Dickey... you gave a generation of music fans so much great songs, incredible music and never forget... 'liz Reed.. that alone puts you on the cosmic guitar all-star list.

^My comments are meant for Greg's response to the OJ Simpson post. Greg said we should be sensitive to RIP posts because the deceased have family and it may offend them.
So when Putin or a well-known Hamas jihadist dies we shouldn't post it because it might offend someone? Where does PA draw the line? As with any art it's subjective and I would not classify Phil Spector as an artistic genius. |

^ The idea with my general comment on ethics is often to try to take the family members feelings into consideration when making one's feelings known (one might not know the feelings, but I think of how I would feel if it was, say, my child). Of course we should consider the physical victims too and care about how they feel. Of course it would apply to some situations much more than others. It does not mean you should respect the deceased or even need to act respectfully towards the deceased. Often I feel sorry for the perpetrator's families. The idea was to link that to closing a thread where I don't think the phrasing good in terms of how this music forum presents itself to PA. Again, I think respect is earned, but we can still consider being thoughtful to those who may be adversely affected (including the families) as a general principle. That's my opinion, no need to respect it, and unlike some who claim that we should automatically respect their opinions, I don't agree with that notion either. If it's, say, a death, I would suggest reporting it factually in the topic line. Again, this came out of topic with the title "Rest in H3LL OJ" showing up prominently in recent posts. I would have posted the news n this thread, and If I felt it important to make a topic specifically on it, I would have gone with the title "OJ Simpson Dead" and actually tried to write something substantive to go with it (that's me). I don't respect OJ at all, but that's not the issue to me.

^ For the record Greg. I find you a wonderfully sensitive and tolerant person, and I think we would be hard pressed to find anyone here who thinks differently. We're lucky to have you.

^ Thanks, I really appreciate that, Steve, and I really appreciate you. We need such voices, I believe. I know I have had my bad days (weeks, months, years) and not handled things nearly as well I should have, but we all (or most) have our off times.
