Long time no recently released lists ... to catch up, here's weeks 13 and 14 in a new, more compact format. PA genre info is missing, but I'm going to add it back soon.
This list includes releases listed on PA as well as those tagged as prog, prog-adjacent or with unknown prog status (but excludes releases explicitly tagged as non-prog). Week 13:

Thank you for the list. It must take quite some time to research all these albums and artists/bands. Your effort is much appreciated.

I have the Present, Holy Family, Extra Life, Zio Crocifisso & Holy Family. I like all of them but the Present is an AOTY candidate.

I know this is ProgArchives and your site is AwesomeProg, and my so far non-existent site is theultimateprogressiveartexperimentalindiequirkyandgenerallyinterestingmusicresource.org but I would like to see you post the non-Prog list as well. Various of what is tagged that what you would call Prog adjacent or even could be deemed Prog, or Prog related, at PA if evaluated. Also, there are a lot of contemporary artists there that I know various people here are very into even if not deemed Prog. For instance, Lingua Ignota which is tagged non-Prog but significantly thanks to a recommendation thread became very popular with a number of forum members (although she has been releasing music under her Kristin Hayter name now. Of course we can also change status of artists, but that means searching for it, knowing it's there, and various cases, adding it ourselves. Even a hyperlink to the non-prog ones would great if there are very many.
EDIT: Fixed some typos. Edited by Logan - April 18 2024 at 10:26 |

^ By all means, here's the non-prog releases as well!
BTW: If one of your favorite releases isn't obviously non-prog or prog, by all means tag it at AP, which will help put it in the proper category for these exports. I'll see if I can improve the accuracy by other means as well. For example, for non-tagged releases I can try to "guess" the status based on previous releases by the artist. Week 13:

Thanks, and yes, if I know its out then I might well change the status. A reason why it helps to have the list. For instance, MGMT. I have not heard that release, but I know that MGMT has made music that could be considered Psych Prog. But Little Dark Age is from 2018. The lastest album is Loss of Life, which was released on 23 February 2024.
Here are the genres for MGMT's Loss of Life at RYM, and this indicates at least Prog adjacent. Genres Neo-Psychedelia Progressive Pop, Indie Rock, Psychedelic Pop, Psychedelic Folk, Dream Pop |

Never heard of Zio Crocifisso before, I jumped on bandcamp to hear what it's about and it's a great discovery.

Yes - I'm scanning these tags, resulting in the rymBot user tagging the release as "Mellow Psych Neo Prog Psychedelia/Pop". I'm scanning both genres and descriptors (hence the "mellow"), and the prog status ends up as "prog" because of the "progressive pop" genre. The new release does not have any prog genres/descriptors assigned so far, so the rymBot tags it as non-prog. I'm regularly re-scanning, so if rym users vote for progressive genres/descriptors enough, the rymBot will eventually "make it prog" . But it is only intended as some food for thought, actual AP users can help the process along .

^^ One has to wary of relying on rymBots, not just for tagging, but I thought interesting, because MGMT's 2018's Little Dark Age was included as Little Dark Age 2018 on April 5th at your site. Loss of Life is the album from this year (as I said, released 23 February 2024). Of course people make mistake or add a re-mix at later year. I don't see that "Little Dark Age 2018" release at RYM, and may have been expunged.
Ans issue with RYM is because of all of the tags they have at their disposal, a lot of music that we at Prog Archives would tag under a Prog category is not tagged as Progressive Rock at RYM. If it's Neo-Psych, good chance it's prog related, if it has any progressive tags, that adds to it. Art Rock too, experimental commonly etc. Edited by Logan - April 18 2024 at 11:04 |

Of course it's next to impossible to really link genres between PA, AP and RYM. The systems are just too different. I'm going for a "good enough" approach where I'm just generating tags from the RYM genres and descriptors. I also have the trust rank which for the rymBot will range between 1 (for releases with only a couple of ratings) and up to 10 for releases with more than 500 ratings, assuming that the higher the ratings, the more input there was for the genre/descriptor voting and therefore the more reliable the tags will be. But like I said, all of that is only to put the releases "on the map" at AP, so it's much better if actual users weigh in and assign the prog status and other tags.

^ Sorry, I'm not sure if I've been making myself clear. Little Dark Age is listed in your Non Prog chart above for Week 14, despite being a 2018 release.
EDIT: I apologise if that sounded terse. I appreciated your response and found it interesting, but was going to take care of necessary matters and thought that I had not expressed this issue adequately over the past posts (I have become exceptionally poor when it comes to translating my thoughts to text -- often due to too much extraneous noodling). ^ No worries, I get it now. The release date in the AP database was wrong, but the year was correct. I fixed it

My 27yr old Nephew turned me onto this band especially the album Oracular Spectacular from 2007. Very enjoyable. Tame Impala is another one he's got me listening to (Currents is the best I think). I've managed to turn him onto some prog (mainly Floyd).

^^ Thanks, Mike. :)
I'll have to give those albums a proper listen, both bands I immediately enjoyed but have not spent much time with. My eldest brother who is 60 turned me onto Tame Impala. I discovered MGMT in 2010 when it was suggested for PA in Crossover. It has been suggested for inclusion in PA a number of times. Always funny to see the range of opinions from not Prog at all to Prog. Not that I care much about inclusion unless I am being asked to evaluate a band, but the Prog/non Prog dichotomy that often ensues has irked me. Prog can be such a broad camp, so I don't like to use the "Non Prog label" but then I tend to use labels that describe the music for what it is, not what is isn't. I understand why Mike uses however, and this is not a dig at that -- if I had a site I would not focus on Prog as a genre. As some say, what matters is the music, but labels are useful for discovery. I wrote this in 2010 in a MGMT topic in Suggest New Bands: "If "Metanoia" had been released in the late 60's (not saying how well the music would fit in that time-frame overall), I'd be pushing really hard for this band. Now that's some damned good retro. Very nice. Glad I heard it!" I wouldn't write that now as i know the scenes better and could place it much better for its time, but then I don't know quite what I meant then. I've very big on Neo-Psych (and retro is no pejorative to me). Love this and so much music like it. Of course Pink FLoyd has inspired so much Neo-Psych. Great that you werre able to turn your nephew onto some Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd is one of those bands whose music seems to transcend generation. I bet my niece would like it, and probably could get my eldest (now 20) into it. Edited by Logan - April 19 2024 at 10:02 |
