^ "Think like we do." doesn't necessarily mean that, "We are 100% percent sure about the truth of our theories."

They want all the people to believe in a cartoon-like world where even the craziest things can be possible.

I don't buy them. I'm a solid materialist.

^ You're really not willing to differentiate, are you? That's blatantly unscientific.

^ The context here has nothing to do with "sciences" per se, methinks; or at least the pivotal aspect is not that.

I already said this in my "first" post (that you quoted and initiated this dialogue):

^ Another evasion. Let's say you're refusing to answer, and leave it at that. Smile

^ Well, you've shown that you're stuck in dogmatic "us vs them" groupthink, which is kind of relevant to the topic of the thread. Smile

^ Mike... There couldn't be "another" evasion there as it was my first. And it was not because of what you think.

Please, leave it here.

Peace out.

Having not read much of the conversation.... I think often it's more like "I know the truth" which makes me special, and you just can't get it more so than "think like we do." People often want to feel special, like to believe that they know more than others, like they are the holders of truth and see the world correctly unlike all of the sheep out there. There's a cult mentality going on commonly with many people who latch on to many conspiracy theories, pseudo-science, spiritualism and a lot of woo generally.

By the way, I often don;t get involved in such threads because it feels like a contest too often rather than dialectic and friendly conversation.

Very much true. But, I differentiated "those do and those don't". And here, there is only "one" of them who "invites" others to question things. He did that a couple of years ago. I vividly remember that. And I commenced my reply with a "Beware..." Wink

Also I didn't reply (or "evaded") Mike's last question because it was rhetorical. I believe I made my points and stance clear.

I REALLY want this to end here. Tongue

^ You can end your participation any time you like. Don't feel like you have to respond. If it's direct question I commonly will try to answer, but that's something of being considerate often because I appreciate it when others answer my questions. If people run with related ideas, that's how threads often go. Don;t force yourself to continue. I prefer the more informal, friendly, easy-going topics to debate-like topics in my older age.

^ Yes. I preferred not to answer a rhetorical question with a tint of insult. But that didn't suffice. Clown

Quote  So no conspiracy theorist who invites others to question things is interested in empirical evidence?

I was rephrasing the point you were making, implicitly asking you whether that was what you were trying to say. Your decision to stonewall the question annoyed me. Of course nobody is entitled to answers to their questions - but then at least we can establish that you are refusing to give a direct answer.

^ I replied indirectly, but my intention was not to "evade" the question.

Also, in your PM, you said that your last question was not rhetorical.

Two misunderstandings in a row! Cool

Next time I'll give you my super-duper directest answers, bro. Beer

The most wonderful thing about living in a democracy is the right to state your opinions without being censored. You can't yell fire in a movie theater but you can say almost anything else. There are also civil law procedures for those engaging in public misinformation. See Rudy Giuliani. A wonderful check against these koo-koos.

There are also regulations against "Hate speech" and this is where the waters start getting murky.

There never has been freedom of speech really. There is only a line that keeps shifting depending on the dominant prevailing attitudes. It is the fight for control of this line that engages most people.

I'm sorry that I didn't have time to respond to your concerns about hate speech as I have them to. But I'm sure you can see now that hate itself did not abate during all the years that hate speech was a civil, political and societal no no. But hate didn't go away, it merely went underground where it festered until it was unlocked in the political realm in the last 8 years.

At least with hate brought to the surface, it clearly indicates what shape this country is in, and more importantly, who and what organizations are hate mongers that people and civil liberty organizations were not aware of up to that point. And who is blowing the dog whistles and agreeing with them.

I feel for you, it sucks having to hearing this type of language day in and day out now, but at least we know where we stand on many different levels.

^ Actually the "corridor" of permissible things to say without repercussions is getting smaller and smaller. It's one thing to allow speech from a legal standpoint, it's another for society to tolerate speech, even if some perceive it as "hate speech". Who defines the boundary? Step outside the permissible mainstream too much, and with a little bit of bad luck you will be shamed, ostracised, deplatformed, canceled etc.. Doesn't sound like free speech to me. How about the guy you chose as your avatar? He in effect made political opposition illegal. So much for democracy ...

yup, that's the reason why I think "democracy" is becoming a joke and those days are numbered, even in politically correct European democracies.

Anyone not liking what he hears or reads or sees can pretend to be "shocked" (being someone shocked has almost become a profession , nowadays) and deviate the text or content into insults and hate speech, simply because he doesn't like it or disagrees with it.

As much as I don't like the "free speech" by the MAGAs (I hate it) and the woke/LGBT apology stuff, I'm against censuring them, however, despite seeing the dangers of convincing weaklings that will "buy" the speech as "truth".

I really preferred democracy before those social networks taught people they had a brain, so they started using them without reading the owner's manual (did they ever receive it?).

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

The same can be said about many quantum physicists, except i'll take out the word all, that's just silly.  Many subscribe to a multi-verse theory. If the theory of an infinite multiverse is true, anything goes, cartoon-like worlds abound, and the craziest things are possible.

Science has told us for a long time now that nothing is solid.  There is no material substance (all is energy) and you have never touched anything material; nothing touches, ever.  This has been based on solid science for a long time now.

I 'm not going to waste my time debating with you as to what is hate speech and how it's defined. It should be self evident. As to Zelensky banning the following political organizations from Ukraine one month after Russia invaded Ukraine, such as Opposition Platform For Life, Party of Shariy Nashi, Opposition Bloc, Left Opposition Boc, Union Of Left Forces, Progressive Socialist Party Of Ukraine, Socialist Party Of Ukriane and Socialists For Ukraine, for all having known and public ties to the Russian government, that should be self evident too. But cheer up. Zelensky is not a dictator. He still must be and has been voted in.
