Most Russians don't care what Americans think...not anymore. https://twitter.com/Sprinterfactory/status/1772633044614103182
Plenty of dissent? There isn't enough dissent. It's difficult to completely shut up half the population.

Earlier in this thread you called me a "conspiracy theorist". You wrote, and I quote,
" I'm responding to a conspiracy theorist..."
Yet, you did not point out a conspiracy theory that I champion. Steve, you label people when you can't present an argument to counter their point of view. Instead of labeling people...present proof to back your claims.

Cindy, I've heard enough from you over the years to get your mindset. You'd better be off trying to disprove it. Good luck.

^ If you can't summarise your argument when pressed, you don't have one. At least from my perspective it sounds like you're just too lazy to do that or you can't remember the details.

Cindy... Luck? I won't need it. Here is my counter-argument. Steve used "ad hominem fallacies" to avoid presenting a valid argument when Steve G. wrote,
"I'm responding to a conspiracy theorist, so nothing I say will alter your confirmation bias. See how it works?

"Cindy, I've heard enough from you over the years to get your mindset."

An "ad hominem fallacy" refers to a rhetorical strategy where the speaker (Steve G.) attacks the character, motive, or some other attribute of the person making an argument rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself. This avoids genuine debate by creating a personal attack as a diversion.

^ There's plenty of this going on in this thread and elsewhere. And it's a difficult call, with conspiracy theories and pseudo-science there are IMHO situations where you can say "sorry, this is too silly to discuss any further". But to summarily dismiss all conspiracy theories, or to say "the person is a conspiracy theorist and therefore no discussion makes sense" is, like you said, just a personal attack - which is often used when someone cannot think of a reasonable argument.

Hi,
Maybe it's best to realize that the discussion is a dead end, and there are too many variables in order to create a fair and clean debate on it. If this was high school debate story/game, the judges would kill your team after the first sentence!

^ This should just be an exchange of ideas. Formal debates are about convincing an audience of something, which usually just results in rethoric and one fallacy after the other. Do you have anything interesting to contribute, other than complaining that we're doing it wrong?

Since when did "conspiracy theorist" become a pejorative term? Perhaps we need to define that too.

AFAIK it has never been a neutral term, but at least since the pandemic it has extremely negative connotations.

Now who's engaging in a personal attack? You are wrong on so many issues in this thread that it must be a record on this website let alone in this thread. You've missed understood so many points even when explained to you like you were a 5 year old. But still I'll give it one last try. I've never said that all conspiracy theories are wrong because some have compelling arguments. What I said was, now pay attention, is that acting on them is dangerous and irresponsible. If you can't understand that then I'm happy to be done with you.

13 pages of circulating around a subject that everyone knew from the start would lead to this nonsensical. Because politics and religion don't go well with music. I hope some have fun with this, just like I love to have arguments with my friends just for fun. I never felt that democracy or any political system would provide me with happiness. I don't spend time criticizing people who are in power in this world; I simply don't pay attention to them. Get back to music!

Going into threads in which you are supposedly not interested for telling people that they shouldn't talk about what they talk about doesn't seem a much more convincing use of time though.

I am guilty of being too curious sometimes, and the more I try to go deep into some subjects, the more I get confused. And you could see that there is a bit of sarcasm in my comments.

Are you insinuating that PA should eliminate the General Discussions section?

No, I think every forum has some kind of general discussion or random stuff that keeps those sites alive for a wider audience. It's just that for me, subjects about religion and politics are boring because they mostly divide people around the world.

I will be explicit. PA should not get rid of a General Discussions section, where people can happily talk about Dune, their favourite pasta & etc.
It should, though, get rid of threads regarding politics and religion. Progressive Ears bans such discussions, and it is a far nicer place for it. I used to participate in such threads, but have given up. I was subjected to a lot of abuse for trying to rationally talk about Covid and accused of being something akin to a mass murderer - looking back through that thread, I am satisfied that much of what I posted is now accepted as being reasonable.
The trouble is that most of these threads descend into nasty behaviour, a kind of obsessive w**kery which does the participants or the site itself no credit whatsoever.

In my estimation, not a single soul has ever moved from their original premise or has changed their opinion on the Interwebz regarding politics or religion. It is fruitless, and this thread has long ago devolved into nonsensical and reptitious rambling fraught with misquotes and misinterpretations.
Time to end this inanity.
