When I was on his YouTube page and saw 500 subscribers, I had to make a thread. Not sure why he's been ignored.. He co-founded YES, and other band stuff, including Empire, which is my favorite of his output along with "Two Sides of Peter Banks", but he also did a lot of session work, including the uncredited solo on Lionel Ritchie's "Hello" and others, including Pete Townshend (along with Sidonie Jordan) Pete Townshend "All Gods Mornings" and doing an instrumental of "Give a Little Bit" for the Supertramp Tribute... There is a documentary in the works, but I haven't heard of any updates.

I always prefer prog with a woman on vocals, and do like instrumentals. I just loved everything he played.. Jazz sensibility with a lot of acoustic, even on the same song. Lots of dynamics, and movement in the song. Momentum, and other emotions. Long songs, short songs, never boring. He just seemed to always play the right note at the right time. I loved his flamenco-laden jazz guitar solos, rhythm work..

Does anyone know why he only did one solo album in the 70s?

Empire - Mark 1

"Be Well, Be Safe, Be Lucky... The Anthology" is on YouTube.. Hoping for early stuff (could never get into most engineering/production after the 70s)

I love interviews, and if you have any favorites, please post!

There's supposed to be a documentary, but it's been a while since there's been an update. Funding problem? Not sure, but we know his widow was upset that former bandmates didn't help out with the funeral. Ironic from a literate standpoint that the guy who helped the most was Mizer.

I personally like his music. Of course Steve Howe practically eclipsed his work with Yes, since he was with the band during the period when they reached their peak, but Peter Banks was quite talented and an amazing instrumentalist and orchestrator.

Peter Banks hasn't been ignored by me. Smile

PETER BANKS (1947-2013) Broken Heart       The first guitarist with YES and also a member of The Syn (with Chris Squire), Empire and Flash. Described as "the architect of prog" by radio DJ and journalist Danny Baker, Peter Banks came up with the original name for YES, which was maybe not the most inspiring of band names, but it was a big improvement over Mabel Greer's Toyshop. Tongue

 4 stars 1999: Peter Banks - The Roots of YES 1964-1968 - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mZotoOTn_HVX3SDY7SoWWaX_tAzMkRXkI
5 stars 2018: Peter Banks - Be Well, Be Safe, Be Lucky: The Anthology - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kLwuSwKHW3vlDyyyw1sElO6M60ShCpHGE

FLASH       A band formed by Peter Banks after he left YES, and the six Flash albums listed below prove they were no mere Flash-in-the-pan. Smile

EMPIRE       A Crossover Prog band with a heart full of Soul, led by the "architect of prog", Peter Banks,  and also featuring the gorgeous soulful vocals of foxy lady, Sydney Foxx.
Empire recorded three superb albums in the mid-1970's - imaginatively titled Mark I, Mark II & Mark III - which wouldn't see release until the mid-1990's, followed by a contemporary 2020 tribute album recorded in memory of Peter Banks (1947-2013), released under the band name, The New Empire. Think of YES with a soulful female vocalist instead of Jon Anderson and that's the sound of The New Empire. Heart Smile

Great guitarist, deserving of more attention. I like the way he threw classical melodies into his live solos.

The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

Can't say I've listened to anything of his live. Can you think of a few songs? I'd like to check them out. Thanks!

The fact that he had so many friends & collaborators speaks volumes to the man's character and talent!

John Wetton, Phil Collins, Jan Akkerman etc.

His last recording work, "In Extremis" by Days Between Stations, is well worth seeking out!
