Equalizer 3
Denzel Washington's extraordinary acting gifts make this somewhat formulaic final chapter in the action series far more engaging than it would be otherwise, and raises yet another retired-agent-out-for-revenge flick to a more complex and human level. |

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Fantasy/Action 2/10 Dreadful...absolutely dreadful. The writing was obviously meant for (or perhaps provided by) a 12 year old. The jokes are lame or obvious. The revenge plot has been done to death and from what I saw, they just kept stealing scenes from other movies and adapting them for this one. Including, but not limited to, the jungle chase scene (Indiana Jones), Too many to mention Lord Of the Rings scenes (The One Tower, The Forged Ring, The Gates of Mordor). DC has been in a death spiral for far too long, and this is its epitaph. i have little hope that even James Gunn can save or revive this failed brand. If, and only if, they abandon the juvenile characters and writing will they even stand a chance. There are better ways to spend 2 hrs.

^I didn't like the first one and this just looked truly vapid.

That's fair enough, and these preferences can be and are very personal things at times. The "jumping around" was one of the reasons I have watched "Everything..." more than once, something I am happy to do because each time I watch it again I pick up something I missed on previous viewings. I actually like movies that challenge me in this regard. As for "Killers Of The Flower Moon", I can't really comment because I haven't seen it, although it has become something of a tradition to nominate Martin Scorsese for best director whenever he releases a film these days. Bullet Train
With some Tarantino-style cues, this adaption of Kōtarō Isaka's novel Maria Beetle is a fun if vacuous pack-'o-killers all vying for the contents of a locked briefcase on a Tokyo bullet train. Joey King & Brad Pitt lead a good cast in this mostly aimless action romp. |

One Life 2023
Starring Anthony Hopkins, this is about the British business man Nicholas Winton who helped save 669 Jewish children from the Nazi death machine that was sweeping through the Czech Republic back in 1938. It's estimated that of the 7000 or so Jewish children in that country that were put into captivity only about 200 survived. The film is largely a character portrait and a good one at that. 9/10

Gran Turismo
Sports drama surrounding the competition between racing videogamers to drive in an actual pro auto race. But good intentions and fancy editing don't quite save this unaccountably slow ~ if otherwise admirable ~ true story of gamer-turned-pro Jann Mardenborough that should've taken its cues from Rocky or The Karate Kid but wanted to be Almost Famous instead. Doesn't quite work but it tries hard. |

Code 8 - A neat, low budget scifi from 2019. I only came across this as part 2 is released later this year. It was made on a small budget (2 million) which was crowd funded, but they really managed to squeeze every last drop of the cash to produce a decent movie. I'm really looking forward to part 2. 8/10

Silver Linings Playbook
A 2012 romantic comedy-drama. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and a cast of other great actors. Highly recommended. Edited by Moonshake - February 09 2024 at 17:51 |

Napoleon 2023
Been dying to watch this since it came out. Didn't disappoint at all especially the battle field scenes which are incredibly well shot and edited. The stuff with his life long love Josephine is perhaps less convincing but not too bad. It seems his love was not really reciprocated. Not sure if this pic paints him in a good light or is even intending to try. He cares for his country but hubris will eventually get the better of him as it does with so many military leaders. 8/10

We watched part 2 of Code 8 last night which was only very recently released. It's nowhere near as good as the first one and just felt like an extended TV episode. A shame really as the series had potential. Only 5/10 this one

It Lives Inside 2022
Almost watched this by accident thinking it was a new spooky tv series. Quite impressed delivering all I want from a lowish budget horror film. Well paced, builds enough tension and then totally goes for it. Only issue is that the subtitles failed to kick in when they were speaking Hindi, but this wasn't often enough to matter in terms of the plot and obviously wasn't the flims fault! 8/10

Argylle - I had very, very low expectations of this movie due to the scathing reviews. Maybe it's me then as I really liked it (my wife did too). Okay, maybe it was 20 minutes too long but it was funny and action packed. You sort of know what to expect with Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Layer Cake, Kick Ass, Kingsman etc.) and to me this didn't disappoint. 8/10

Dune: Part 2
A lush, deep dive into the plasma pool for the conclusion of Frank Herbert's first novel (a space opera that George Lucas gleaned much from), Villenueve's vision is only outdone by the lengths to which he achieves it. And though even talkier than Part 1, this epic fantasy is supremely satisfying if far too rich & complex on an empty stomach. Dune is an investment--- a relationship that requires patience and commitment in order to be fully appreciated. |

The Iron Claw
Poignant & painful athletic drama on the pro wrestling Von Erich brothers who continually suffered family tragedy despite reaching the heights of their craft. Though a high-skill sport, professional wrestling is usually seen as 'not real' or just silly but here is given its due by lifelong fan writer/director Sean Durkin with a script full of heart and cast to back it up, making Iron Claw the best macho-man flick since Magic Mike. Blackberry
It's estimated that at it's peak Blackberry had a 45% share of the cell phone market before the I-phone killed it. This is very entertaining look at the origins of the product and the characters that were involved. Lots of shaky camera work. 8/10
