By that I mean most people know Genesis as an 80s pop band, but among us fanatics it is usually the Gabriel era that we think of. What other bands are there who are well known, but their less well known work is considered some of the best of a more obscure genre? The only other band I can think of is Talk Talk. Everyone knows "It's My Life", but most people have never even heard of "Spirit of Eden". I don't think Yes would count, because you still hear Roundabout and Your Move on the radio, even if more people know OOLH. Not strictly about prog bands, this can apply to anything.

Fleetwood Mac immediately comes to mind. A much better band in the Peter Green years prior to all the pop hits.

In NZ we have Split Enz, which is classified as Art Rock and got huge radio airplay here in NZ. You can still see tastes of the prog keyboard intro style in their pop hits https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSGpLto1yxU

Only their first album was 'progressive' though.

Yes is a perfect example. My Dad knows them as a w**kerous band (Dad is a guy who grew up in the Punk era), Mum knows them as that cool 80s band who sung Owner of a Lonely Heart. The latter is what most people seem to know them as. I'm 28 so I would speak to a lot of my parents friends about music and no one ever knows prog but people always seem to recall that old genre of music with "long keyboard solos" that go on for about twenty minutes.

Moody Blues could be considered one, or Procol Harum, as most people only know their pop tunes. Pink Floyd is probably the only band I can think of that is known for its prog/alternative style. The thing is, most people do not realise what prog is from my experience and seem to cast a lot of music under one umbrella of "Rock".

Budka Suflera. Prog fans prefer the debut Cień Wielkiej Góry to the rest of the band's output. But in fact Budka Suflera's tracks from the 80's onward are better known in Poland, as far as the general public goes. Their most commercially successful singles are their least proggy ones. :P

I was actually going to suggest Pink Floyd because no one ever hears anything from before "Dark Side of the Moon" nor anything from "Animals". Although Pink Floyd are known for their head music, it is usually only their more mainstream tracks that one hears on the radio.

Starship were massive in the 80's , hard to relate that to their 60's psychedelic stuff when they were in airplane mode. Heart were a lot heavier early on but mostly became famous for the 80's power ballads. Def Leppard were a much better band when they did High and Dry but the softer AOR friendly stuff made them huge. Mostly it's just about bands 'going commercial' as it was termed back in the day.

ELO's first couple were never widely known;

Besides Chicago, Journey, Styx and Reo Speedwagon could all fit into this category too...
