Less than 18 hours to submit your favorite releases of 2023 ... if you haven't already, now is the time. So far 18 collabs and 28 regular forum members have participated - you can do it, too! Even if you only have one favorite release of 2023, your contribution still counts and can make a difference! Smile

Instructions here:
Submit your lists with the tool or "manually", either works fine!

EDIT: Results are available here:

You can also view the results in a more browsable form at AP:

Thanks, Mike for all your hard work on this. Such a success. And Michael Gira (of Swans) is preparing his acceptance speech just in case. While I would love to see Swans take this, as they almost say, "The Beggar can't be a chooser". That said, I did choose The Beggar as my album of the year.... Really, I'm happy with the list and don't really care who comes out on top. It's great to see so many participants, people sharing what they care about, and I have more albums to discover from the lists. Hopefully people keep refining and adding even after the deadline.

Yes, I designed the polls to be an ongoing thing. In just about 9 hours registration will close for the "official" PA Aoty 2023, and the results will then be posted here in the forum. But the poll will remain open and I'll implement weekly/monthly views which highlight the changes (how releases moved up and down the chart over time).

And I agree and would like to stress that at least for me, this whole endeavor is not at all about which release "wins". Sure, it's interesting to see which releases end up at the top. But then again these are the most popular releases. The real fun for me is to see all the unusual releases which people like and few others even know about.

Judging by the recent posts it looks as if Agusa is making a late bid for the top spot. 'Voter rigging' as suggested by Sean Trane ( and I knocked down as not real) could actually be a thing here? I do wonder if there is an argument for not accepting 'late' lists that do not have at least 20 artist selections?! My reasoning is that it may be convenient to not give points to certain artists. I would at least like to see all the potential points scoring positions filled. That is my personal opinion.

^ Well, the people have spoken. Those last two lists put the Agusa release in the top position, but it was already at #2 the day before:

It's a great album! I can only say that the more people participate, the less likely massive last-minute changes will be.

Demanding everyone to submit the full 20 releases is not a good idea IMHO. This will cause people to add mediocre releases to their list, just because they need to make the number. I'd rather have them post a list of one release, if that really is their favorite one. It yields 20 points, as does everyone else's favorite release, which I think is very fair.

Now that the voting for the official list is over, I will post the results soon ... stay tuned Cool

Thanks Mike! Awesome job with everything.

In the end, it doesn't matter to me when votes came in. It is about participation and bringing attention to all the great and varied music that's out there. Both the Zopp and Agusa albums are great prog albums.

Thanks to Greg for getting this opened up to forum members and promoting throughout.

Doesn't look like voter rigging to me. Although the two last lists are from people who are not very active on these forums, they didn't register just for this. And if you look at those lists, they are rather retro-prog oriented; I would consider Zopp also retro prog, but more in a niche section of the prog world and not in the mainstream (symph/psych) prog tendencies where Agusa fits, in my opinion. Anyway, it doesn't look like a vote against another band.

I personally prefer Agusa's album over Zopp's (it almost made my top 20, whereas Zopp never was)...

On another note, I've listened to a bit more than 50 prog albums (present on PA) released in 2023 and I must say - even to my standards (whatever they are) - that there are many very good albums between those. A good year for prog indeed.

Good job, Mike. Clap
If I'd realized you'd made three different lists (not too good at reading rules Embarrassed), I might've chosen/voted differently for the second & third lists

Well I didn't really think this potential rigging could have significant massive effects in the top rungs , unless it's a concerted effort between a few members. My concern was more in the range off moving an album from spot 129 to 77 (for ex) from a single voter. To me, it was obvious right from the start that Zopp & Agusa would end up in the top 5 or 10.

There always was the potential for some serious vote-rigging. We have seen people manipulating top albums and even, quite ridiculously, a fanclub joining up just to support their fave to win in a Prog polls "tournament". I worry about promoters and the like. That said, this seems to be fine. I don;t think it really matters which is in top position of the top ones, of if an album as at 8 or 10, or 73, or 196. For me the ultimate position of a singular collected work is not of much interest. What I like is the collaborative aspect of this of site/forum members (that's a reason why I like the Interactive Polls). I also am interested in looking at the individual lists of users. The ranking is not that important to me. My rankings felt so arbitrary and could change significantly at the drop of a hot. Some days or even moments I am more into some kinds of things than others. I guess for the longer run, the ones that interest me most are the ones that I have not yet heard that intrigue me from the lists.

It worked out really well, but if this becomes bigger still or known in future years as words gets around -- and of course I hope it does, which will be great for both PA (Prog Archives) and AP (Awesome Prog) -- I could see attempts to manipulate and there are ways to lessen that like limiting it to people who joined before such-and-such a date. On the other hand, if it brings traffic and interest, that could be good for this site as well as AP.

^ Isn't there already a limit in that someone needs to have at least 40 points in order to be able to vote in polls? That should be sufficient...

^ That 40 points requirement was implemented for voting in polls after the poll competition shenanigans. But I don't think we should require that for participating in the AOTY because we have reviewers and other long-term members who just are not forum users or big forums users that I still would like to participate (even if they choose not to post much here). And maybe there could be an announcement for this AOTY on the home/front page if M@x gets involved. That on the other hand likely would lead to attempts at abuse, so need some system/ criteria in place. I think been a member for a certian time, perhaps have made posts and multiple reviews....

Huge props to Mike for running this whole thing, and props to everyone who voted as well! I felt like this was a really fresh take on our old tradition, and it was great to be a part of it.

If it ends up becoming an issue in future years, I have utmost confidence in our admin+collaborator team to be able to implement systems to mitigate it. That being said, I completely agree with your last point. I think opening this collaborative activity to a greater number of people could really help revitalize PA—I don't think it's a secret to most of us that the website has been suffering from user attrition in the past few years.

Thanks again to Mike and all who participated, and I'm excited to listen to some of y'alls favorites from last year that I haven't heard yet.
I use they/them pronouns (feel free to ask me about this!)

Check out my music on my bandcamp!

Thanks Mike for running this in an innovative manner that worked out quite well!

I'm gutted though that in the last minute an album popped up at number 1 that I haven't heard yet. Gotta repair that.

Indeed there were many voteworthy releases in 2023; my top 30 if not 40 were easily worth being Top 20 listed.

^ The amazing thing about 2023 is that I really like the Agusa release, but it's not even in my top 50 (of 250+ releases) of 2023. Smile

^Yeah, Agusa is a three-star (at most) release for me. Retro bluesy flute jams. There is so much I prefer in 2023. Not in my top 50 either.

Amazing job, Mike! Thanks.

I put Agusa at 43 and Zopp at 56 (for in and out of PA). Both have strong retro qualities, both are on the derivative side, but I like the beauty and playfulness in Agusa's album more. I like the Agusa album quite a lot more, and Zopp has a sheen/slickness that does not appeal much to me. I'm not against retro music, and ind that I like a lot of music that draws heavily on the past, but I do rather wish that something a little more adventurous/ different/ less derivative had topped the list. Prog yes, but not really progressive choices. They seem like "safe" choices to me. Comfort food, perhaps, kind of stuff.

^ this sounds a bit like the general feeling when IQ won the 2019 poll with Resistance. I do think that us calling anything 'safe' is very different to the wider world of music that cares very little for art based rock music. That is all prog is really. The Norwegian scene dominated the year and it is strongly 'retro' in feel but still captures that freedom and sheer musical brilliance that is our beloved genre. I think actually Seven Impale's album is the least 'retro' of the top albums. A lot more edgy . My top 3 was Zopp, Seven Impale and Agusa.

^ Safe is relative. From what has seemed to me to be a fairly stereotypical, mainstream for PA audience perspective it seemed quite safe and certainly predictable. Nothing at all wrong with it and it is to be expected to go for that which is in your wheelhouse. It would not be safe of me to go with a Dream Theater album with Neal Morse singing duets with Labrie, probably, due to my tastes. Some might see these retro album as playing on nostalgia, but a lot of younger fols are into those too and may have fresh take on the music. Retro-Prog, the choice of a new and old generation.

I easily could say that my album pick, The Beggar, was a very safe choice coming from me and a safe Swans album -- a Swans album that revisits themes and has something of a David Bowie Blackstar feeling of approach to me. It feels like a culmination of works and the end of an era. One of my favourites with a 2023 release, Kosmischer Laufer, is actually imitative of eras and pretends to be music of the past (has a creative faux backstory to go along with it).

"The Norwegian scene dominated the year and it is strongly 'retro' in feel but still captures that freedom and sheer musical brilliance that is our beloved genre." I like your phrasing here and I do appreciate the sentiment.

I have not heard Seven Impale yet, but albums I would liked to see come out on top are the PoiL Ueda albums. Not complaining, however.
