^ Really sorry to hear that. I think she was the first female DJ on BBC Radio?
I used to really enjoy her shows back in the day. RIP Annie

Yeah she was on Radio One at the start of the 1970's (when I was discovering rock & prog music), initially as a prog DJ, but always championing new artistic talent, or inspiring other women to become DJ's or music journalists.

RIP Frank Z - singer and central person of German punk/post punk legend Abwärts. Chances are they are unknown here but their first albums are great, sharp, direct, creative (FM Einheit and Mark Chung, later Einstürzende Neubauten, were both members) and Frank was touring with them until not long ago.

RIP Melanie Safka (aka Melanie). She was 76. "Lay Down (Candles in the rain)" was a very powerful song and one about her experience at Woodstock. RIP Melanie.

Au revoir, Melanie. Loved her as a kid. "Brand New Key", "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma" and "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" all a part of my childhood soundtrack.

So sad hearing about Melanie - she has always been a favourite singer-songwriter of mine since my teenage years. R.I.P beautiful lady.

I've made a lot of mixed CDs of more commercial/classic rock songs for when I'm driving with my girlfriend in the car, which I've added to one playlist on my iPhone that I play on shuffle when we are in the car together. Melanie's Brand New Key is on there and it has come up a few times in the past week. I don't think that I was familiar with it prior to when I was researching top 10 lists from the 70's and 80's to get ideas for a mixed CD and downloaded this song to add to it. Sort of an odd song, but kind of a fun listening experience. I'll have to check out a couple of her other songs listed here. I don't know that I have ever heard them.

In my opinion, Melanie's finest albums are: 'Candles in the Rain' (1970) - in particular the title track, 'What Have They Done to My Song Ma?', and her stunning cover of The Stones' 'Ruby Tuesday' 'The Good Book' (1971) - standout tracks: 'Babe Rainbow' and 'The Nickel Song' 'Gather Me' (1971) - standout tracks: 'Brand New Key', and 'Someday I'll Be a Farmer' I'd certainly recommend you start with those three albums before delving into the rest of her 60's/70's catalogue. This live rendition just came by on my preferred radio, because, sadly, Marlena Shaw passed away last week (on January 19). I don't know her music that well, but this quite blew me away... RIP Marlena |

I agree with your assessment. 'Candles in the Rain' is the best place to start with Melanie for certain. One of my favorite songs of hers is from this album: Another of her songs that I rate highly is: A later album that deserves a listen is 'Photograph'. I can listen to just about anything by Melanie. A beautiful lady and a beautiful soul. RIP Melanie. |

Though the biography sites have not been updated, I have heard from several sources that the great prog folk guitarist Paul Brett has passed away. His credits as session musician are many, and he had a lengthy solo career as well as time at the helm of Paul Brett Sage. He was also known for his guitar collections and world renowned as an acoustic guitar master, though his electric was pretty good too. He was quite active in the last decade. I recommend the first s/t Paul Brett Sage album and his two solo albums "Interlife" and "Eclipse"
RIP Paul and thank you Edited by kenethlevine - February 02 2024 at 11:08 |
