    Posted: January 25 2024 at 05:57
Hello everyone,

I enjoy progressive metal a lot, but vocals mostly are a big turn-off for me.

I'm looking for progressive metal bands without high-pitched vocals or very melo/dramatic kind of power-like or metalcore-like vocals. (I'm struggling to put it into words because i have no idea what term to use here).

In short, NOTHING like:
Dream theater, Leprous, Thank you scientist, Vola, Sleep token, Distorted harmony, TesseracT, Haken, Periphery, Pain of salvation, Acrane roots, Caligula's horse, Symphony X, Ayreon, Karnivool, Nevermore...
(I do listen to some of these sometimes though, but not what i'm looking for)

Vocals that I like (or okay with) are from bands like:
The ocean, Opeth, Devin townsend, Tool, Soen, Katatonia, Riverside, Ihsahn, Gojira, Rivers of nihil, Ne obliviscaris, Haggard, Igorrr...

I know it's not clear enough maybe but hope i managed to give an idea about what I'm looking for.

Please suggest me bands I've never mentioned!!

Looking at those two lists, I am confused. Are you sure you didn't just randomly assign the bands?

There are instrumental bands if you are okay with no vocals at all.

I don't get it, some of the vocalists listed don't have high pitched vocals. Confused

One group you didn't mention though I don't know which category they belong to is Mastodon.

I think I get it now - the OP has no problem with extreme vocals as long as they are not high-pitched. That still excludes much of Devin Townsend ...

^ So you like Devin Townsend vocals, which are frequently high-pitched and melodramatic?

Devin has very deep high-pitched vocals, if that helps….

I love the new Baroness album. Lower register vocals, for sure.  My metal prog friends say that the entire Baroness discography is great.  The guitarist/singer paints all the album covers. Below are two new songs.

I listen to few songs by devin tbh, the thing is, take for example opeth clean vocals vs thank you scientist vocals! I can't stand TYS vocals even though i enjoy the music.. I'm sorry i don't know the correct terms to use here to describe the difference..

Except for when he’s deep into higher registers, which happens frequently.

You might like Primus. Tales from the Punchbowl. Neither high pitched nor Cookie Monster. More like an auctioneer on steroids.

The first band to come to my mind is Neurosis, which I think is great.

Another good one I can suggest is   OSI (US) - Office of Strategic Influence (2003).

I second Ok Goodnight, it's high-pitched but it's a woman singing wonderfully. Sound is very original, "The Fox and the bird" is heavily story-based.
Also Baroness, as mentioned. Their last album is beautiful and they finally got the mixing right, some great nice experimental bits as well.
District 99 is also led by a woman, they have a quite unique sound, some warped reality mix of Rush lol I also recommend their last album, which has a great mature sound while sounding quite unique (especially heavy synths from keyboards)
AVKRVST is a nice blend of Riverside with Opeth.
Dreadnought is you want more woman-led vocals :P Very opeth-like, check "The Endless"

Suggestion to the OP: Back in 2002(ish) I warmed up to growling vocals. Could not stand them before that year. Then I heard Opeth and other extreme metal bands and slowly eased into that style. Instead of avoiding these "high pitched" vocals, I suggest that you pick a few of the absolute best releases with the vocals you can't stand and then listen to them every once in a while. Put tracks on rotation which you can tolerate and basically like, if not for the vocals.

Do as you wish, but there can be a huge potential in getting used to new styles.
