There is not much information about this UK band on the internet. They released just one album in 2002 called "Painkiller", but it is really great and I think it deserves its place on the site, maybe under the Jazz-Rock section.
I'll quote what's on the cover of the CD: Personel: Mark Preston - guitar Simon Pearson - drums Diego Kovadloff - bass Guy Baker - trumpet & flugelhorn Jean Toussaint - soprano sax Juanjo Mosalini - piano Darren Morris - piano Gareth Williams - piano Recorded at Studio 99 by Mike Westergaard Mixed by Simon Osborne Mastered by Chris Blair at Abbey Road Produced by Diego Kovaldoff All tracks written by Diego Kovadloff and Mark Preston except "Blind Pew" and "Sharkness" written by Diego Kovaldoff only. Some more info from the Web: "Based in London, this band produce a sound reminiscent of Allan Holdsworth on speed. Simon Pearson drums a mad but body rocking beat. Kovadloff writes a mean and abstract bassline; complemented only by Mark Preston’s enflaming guitar touches. The mix of smooth bass, sharp drumming and occasionally ambient but tango-esque guitar lines create a rather oximoronic texture. The greatest texture known to man. This shall now be known as Lomo!" The press say: '..Their CD Painkiller is unfamiliar yet it seems like it's always there in the back of your mind. The songs have an urbane sheen perfect for a night in town and a warmth suited to relaxing at home. I can't say for sure whether Lomo plays rock for jazz fans or jazz for rock fans. Either way, the grooves are irresistible. Nick Bensen, Free City Media, February 2003. 'Painkiller is an auspicious and potent mix of jazz and progressive rock with tango vibes.' Humphrey Inzillo, Rolling Stone, September 2003. 'Painkiller is a crisp jazz-fusion outing from British Band Lomo. On tracks too adventurous to be considered smooth, Simon Pearson's drumming is supportive and expressive. Witness his impressive, melodic cymbal work on 'Present Climate', his navigation of the funky opus 'Serpent Handling', and his attention to the pocket and textures on Faultlines.' Robin Tolleson, Modern Drummer, November 2003. 'The sensation of quasi sorrowful solitude is almost continuously present. We imagine ourselves walking throught the streets of London, Paris, New York in the dead of the night. These compositions are the soundtrack of a tormented but nevertheless saving walk.' Renaud Rigart, Zoopa Loop, October 2003 'Lomo emphasizes silences, making them interesting, and that is their biggest achievement.' M. Garrido, Cuadernos de Jazz, February 2003 'The paradox surfaces after listening, when we realize we are before a trio that allow themselves a vast array of musical influences. Their sound is solid despite the minimalist angle, they have a harmonic complexity suited to the trio and a timbric depth and schematic rigour that make Painkiller into an unparalleled work in the current music scene. Lomo's music moves and is addictive.' Jaume Nadal, Margen Magazine, April 2003 'I like how they're not stuck in any easy pigeonhole, and are gushing with stylistic shape shifting while always remaining vividly direct and physically muscular in their interplay and exchanges.' George Parsons, Dream Magazine, September 2003. 'Lomo plays a lean, smart kind of jazzy instrumental rock that recalls the minutemen as much as it evokes Miles Davis. On this new EP, Lomo revisits songs from the 2002 CD Painkiller, with sometimes radically different alternate versions. The London-based band features Diego Kovadloff (bass), Simon Pearson (drums) and Mark Preston (guitar), aided on some tracks by a rotating cast of accomplished players: Guy Barker (trumpet), Dominic Glover (trumpet and flugelhorn), Jean Toussaint (tenor sax). Fury reframes Painkiller's "The Surge", "Serpent Handling" and "Present Climate" as persistent guitar jams at times colored by intense trumpet parts. These three catchy energetic tunes are given a dashing treatment, making for a strong, engaging EP. Lomo plays an immediate, unpretentious jazz/rock/funk hybrid that blows away the bloated fusion stereotype'. By Nick Bensen, Free City Media, May 2008. 'Lomo is a London based band run by bassist and composer Diego Kovadloff. In its wide ranging instrumental output, Lomo blends elements of jazz-rock, jazz-funk and jazz-fusion resulting in a dynamically rich and cinematic sound.' From Mark Preston, composer & guitarist with Lomo from Sep 1999 - Jul 2003 (via LinkedIn): 'Lomo was an influencial Jazz, Rock, Tango tinged collective, aclaimed by jazz critics and fans alike. Their album "Painkiller" was released on Hammerhead Records in 2003 with two E.P follow ups in the following 2 years. Lomo performed at The Vortex along with many other top London music Clubs, Lomo spontaneously combusted into a mutual dislike of each other late 2002 on the eve of a 3 week tour of Barcelona...never to perform or even meet again...' The original incarnation thus seems to have split up in 2002, before Diego Kovadloff later gathered together some new musicians for the band. The EPs seem to have been released several years after some of the tracks on them were first recorded. Painkiller (2002): 1. Surge (5:04) 2. Present Climate (7:48) 3. Blind Pew (6:34) 4. Lol! Searching the Internet is about all I'm good for, so it's something I've kinda developed a knack for over the years.
Someone's got to put a biography together out of all that lot now though... Edit: The band's most recent (& possibly current) line up seems to be: - Diego Kovadloff / bass - Dylan Howe / drums - Nat Martin / guitar - Carl Hudson / keys That line up recorded live performances of three tracks from those earlier releases at Perry Vale Studios in Forest Hill, London quite recently by the looks of it: See also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW2wgiNHsow.
