A-Z of Psychedelic Rock

ALICE      A short-lived French Psychedelic/Progressive Rock band who could've been huge - but only in France. After all, how many French bands have made it big outside of their native country? None that I know of - not even Magma, who are only known to us prog heads. Were Alice successful in France? No idea. Better Go Ask Alice. I CAN tell you what Alice sound like though - they're like the French version of Jethro Tull, only without the throaty growling vocals. Smile

A-Z of Psychedelic Rock

BABY GRANDMOTHERS      From Sweden they are coming, the Baby Grandmothers main claim to fame was having once supported the Jimi Hendrix Experience on a Scandinavian tour in 1968, after which they quickly disappeared in a purple haze of smoke when their regular Stockholm performance venue "Filips" was demolished in December 1967, just four months after its opening. The two Baby Grandmothers albums below feature live performances from that short-lived Stockholm venue.  Confused

BANCHEE      What was I Thinkin'? Noises in my brain are telling me this groovy band are from Laurel Canyon in the sun-kissed state of California with their west coast psychedelic vibes, but they're actually from the windswept concrete canyons of New York and with two albums that are now rarer than a purple poodle. Smile

A-Z of Psychedelic Rock

BACHDENKEL      Despite the Germanic-sounding name, Bachdenkel were formed in Birmingham, England in the late 1960's. Their first album "Lemmings" (1970) was far superior to their later album "Stalingrad" (1977). Although "Lemmings" was recorded in 1970, the album wouldn't see release until 1973. The album was recorded at a time when the Psychedelic Rock era was merging into the Progressive Rock era, and this is very much reflected in the music contained within the album. "Lemmings" is a real treasure of the era for Psychedelic and Progressive Rock lovers alike.

The album features a superb opening track, "Translation", with a deliciously slow build-up of laid-back, mellow vocals and electric guitar and then exploding into life towards the end with some really wild and intricate guitar virtuosity, very reminiscent of the psychedelic sixties era. Track 2, "Equals" is a
short continuation of the opening number with a return to a gentler guitar sound again, together with hazy-sounding vocals. The third track "An Appointment With The Master" is outstanding! The song has a triumphal,  marching rhythm to it, combined with uplifting, feel-good vocals and superb psychedelic guitar mastery which leaves one feeling euphoric. Track 4, "The Settlement Song", the last track on Side One and the longest track on the album at over 11 minutes long,  opens with a
deceptively quiet beginning with dreamy vocals before launching into a powerful rhythm and pounding electric guitar. The song sounds in places like it could be the Beatles on a crazy psychedelic acid trip. The epic song returns to a more laid-back pace during the middle section before the tremendous finale, featuring the heavy, pounding electric guitar and drum rhythm, a prevalent feature of the album as a whole.

Side Two of the album opens with a short duration 2-minute song  "Long Time Living" with a more laid-back pace and featuring the gentle sound of an organ playing in the background. The sixth song on the album "Strangerstill" has an impressive build-up with the familiar pounding guitar, bass and drum pattern heard on previous songs. It's another classic song combining wild psychedelic guitar riffs and grandiose major chords, which will sound familiar to Prog_Rock fans everywhere. The final track on the album "Come All Ye Faceless" is a 9-minute masterpiece and it makes a fitting highlight to a great album. The song starts off gently and gradually builds up into a tremendous crescendo of wonderfully wild, psychedelic guitar freak-outs and sonorous organ playing for the majestic grand finale, rounding off a first-rate album in magnificent style.

If you don't want to follow the crowd and be a "Lemming", then give this often overlooked and under-appreciated album a listen. You may like it and might even grow to love it. All of the superb tracks on the album blend perfectly together and make the album as a whole a rock masterpiece. This rare album treasure still sounds fresh and original 50 years on. Highly recommended for lovers of classic Psychedelic & Progressive Rock from the early 1970's era.

A-Z of Psychedelic Rock

A couple more European "A-list" nuggets of psychedelia from the archives....

THE 4 LEVELS OF EXISTENCE    The 4 Levels of Existence only existed just long enough to produce one album, recorded in about ten hours and released on an obscure underground label, but that's the stuff of which prog legends are made. The album is a tasty Greek salad of Psychedelic Rock, spiced up with a light sprinkling of feta cheese. The lyrics are all in Greek, but that's part of its endearing charm. In spiritual tradition, the name of the band and eponymous album is a reference to the four Sanskrit levels of human existence. Namely, the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. To improve physical well-being, you could try walking, stretching, massage, yoga, running, dancing or swimming. Or alternatively, if that all sounds like too much hard work and you want to save a lot of time and effort, why not just listen to the album instead. It'll only take 35 minutes of your time and you don't even need to take any vitamin supplements. Tongue

3 stars 1976: The 4 Levels of Existence - The 4 Levels of Existence - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB1RCw0fPY0

AHORA MAZDA      Not a sporty Japanese motor car, but the highest deity in Zoroastrianism and also the name of a little-known Psychedelic Rock band from Holland.

4 stars  1970: Ahora Mazda - Ahora Mazda - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz0s_8vdS1o

BAUMSTAM     As you may have guessed from the name, this band of Krautrockers are from foreign parts. Namely, the town of Witten in North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. Baumstam are all fired up with amplifiers turned up to the max on full thrust so prepare for a blast of Also Sprach Zarathrusta on steroids. It's a psychedelic spacey odyssey! Cool

THE BEAT OF THE EARTH     Orange groves and treasure troves. This fruity band are from Orange County in the sunshine state of California and when it comes to psychedelic jam bands, nothing beats the 20-minute-long psychedelic freak-outs of The Beat of the Earth. They're jammin', they're jammin', and I hope you like jammin' too, oh yeah!  Cool

BEAUREGARD AJAX     Not a Dutch football team, but a highly regarded Psychedelic Rock band from somewhere just off the Ventura Highway in Oxnard, California. According to Wikipedia, Oxnard is located about 60 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, which would place it in the Pacific Ocean by my reckoning. Smile

Billy T.K.'s Powerhouse     Do you want jam on it? Well, you've come to the right place, as Billy T.K.'s Powerhouse are one of the best psychedelic jam bands you're ever likely to hear, although you would have needed to travel to the other side of the world to see them Live, as they're from the land that's given us Mauri culture, kiwi fruit, and bungee jumping - the scariest thing you can do whilst sitting down! Don't try this at home, folks!! Ouch

BLACK PEARL      The mother of all Funk Rock bands from San Francisco with a "sex machine" singer who modelled himself on James Brown. Black Pearl were once described as a band who "crank out some hard rockin' psych-rock music with the most ferocious drumbeats you've heard in a while", and having just listened to their two albums of pounding, pulsating rhythms, who am I to disagree!? Smile
