A-Z of German Krautrock Artists

AIR      It's Bach to the future for this obscure, classically-inspired German band who deserve an Airing, and if you wonder what Teilweise Kacke means, roughly translated it means "Partly Crap", but try not to let that put you off. It's really not that bad and it still beats listening to fahn fahn fahn auf der autobahn by Krautwerk again, which is about as much fun as driving down the motorway with a flat tyre. Geek

3 stars 1973: Air - Teilweise Kacke... Aber Stereo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ__SRVOUMs

ALCATRAZ     Willcommen to the sound of Alcatraz, an obscure Jazz-Rock/Fusion outfit from Hamburg. They say there's no escape from Alcatraz, just as there's no escape from ProgArchives, where we're all just prisoners here, of our own device. Smile

ALEX ORIENTAL EXPERIENCE     Der Osten trifft den Westen! Alex is from the near east city of Cologne, but his ethnic vibes are firmly rooted far to the east somewhere in the region of Asia Minor, so if you go barmy over baglamas and have a taste for hookah pipes and hummus, then you've come to the right place. Souks you, sir! Alex Oriental Experience will be right up your kasbah, where it's all really quite bazaar. Smile

...

Hi,

My understanding was that Amon Duul (this one) was not exactly a band ... it has the true feel of an "event" that was recorded, and that was that. Each time I hear one of these, it feels the same ... unorganized and just let her rip.

As something that was a part of the very early "krautrock", that is ... total 100% improvisation, then this stuff stands up, but you also get to hear what can go wrong with an improvisation when there are no parameters setup ... not that these are required at all, since it wouldn't exactly be an improvisation if there were parameters, but a sense of cohesion, and musicianship would make a better statement than the stuff they did, which ... I suppose that we could say has very little musical value.

Compare this free form to what Damo Suzuki did on stage. He had no plan either, and has been like that since those days busking, and he talks about it in his book, and the film special ... however, unlike the folks in that AD, Damo, at least, has an excellent ear for picking up sounds and effects that he can turn into various vocal details. He states that he can not remember a time when he wanted to do something and it came up ... he says that the music and the players are doing their thing, and what he thinks is not real within that situation.

I consider these an important record of what "krautrock" was, and came from, along with the clips that Werner Herzog has shown us of Klaus Kinski doing the same thing with a theater audience, and then on a film shoot! He just flies ...regardless.

In essence, we are not ready, I'm not sure we ever will -- progressive or not -- to listen to what could be easily described as "nothing" musically ... a sort of 4 year old playing on a toy piano ... it's nice and fun to listen to ... but it tends to stop there! ..... errrrr ... unless your name is Robert Wyatt and somehow it comes alive!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

AMON DUUL II    A Krautrock band from Munich who are anything but dull, and if you've heard the original Amon Duul (whose albums sound like they were recorded in someone's garage), you'll know how much better their second incarnation is. Viva La Trance! Smile

ANIMA-SOUND     An experimental Krautrock outfit whose "music" mostly consists of weird noises with a few animal sounds thrown in for good measure too (just as it says on the label). Baa! You'd be better off listening to Pink Floyd's Animals in all honesty. Smile

A-Z of German Krautrock Artists

ASH RA TEMPEL      From one of the least-known Krautrock groups (Arktis) to one of the best-known of all time, Ash Ra Tempel was led by Manuel Goettsching (1952-2022) and featured Klaus Schulze (1947-2022) on their first self-titled album, and in the spirit of Friendship, Schulze returned again for their final album together in 2000. Ash Ra Tempel later became Ashra when Goettsching went solo with "New Age of Earth" in 1976. Ash Ra Tempel may represent the ultimate in tripped-out, psychedelic Krautrock, but if you really want to tune in, turn on and drop out, then why not Join Inn with Timothy Leary with Seven Up in 1973 for some Good Vibrations (or Gut Schwingungen in German). Smile

ASTERIX     Germany's answer to Uriah Heep, so you won't be surprised to learn that Asterix were the forerunners of Lucifer's Friend, which featured none other than John Lawton of Uriah Heep who's best remembered now for having bigger hair and wearing more eye mascara than Joan Collins. Smile

ATTEMPT TO RESTORE     The aptly-named Attempt to Restore with their long spacey jams, recreates the halcyon psychedelic daze of Can, Agitation Free & Amon Duul II, so set the controls for the heart of the sun and lie back and think of Germany. This album is a blast! Smile

BABA YAGA       Baba Yaga could be a baby's first words, a mystical Indian fakir, the site of a Nazi massacre during WWII, or a wicked witch of the east. Either way, it's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma - as someone famous once said -  just like the ethnic Collage of spacey improvisations by this mysterious Krautrock band. Baba Yaga's first self-titled album is their finest hour, but their sophomore album is twice as nice if you have a taste for some exotic tandoori spice from somewhere east of Londonistan.  Smile

BAUMSTAM      INCOMING!!!! Prepare to take cover as Baumstam are live and unleashed in the greatest ever storming blitzkrieg of twin guitar attacks since the Michael Schenker Group first raised the rafters with their own artillery barrages of twin guitar fire and fury over Germany and Europe. Thumbs Up

JERRY BERKERS      Guten Tag! Jerry Berkers isn't exactly a household name - even in his own German household - but you may know him better as a one-time member of Wallenstein, before getting Underway with his one and only solo album, Unterwegs (no translation needed). Smile

BETWEEN       An international Krautrock band based in Munich with an intriguing blend of ethno-fusion that falls somewhere in Between ancient "serious music" and modern "popular music." It's ideal music for listening to whilst puffing away on a Turkish hookah pipe, although I didn't inhale. Tongue

A-Z of German Krautrock Artists

BLACKBIRDS      Off on your hols? Don't know who to fly with? Then why not go aye-up and away with Yorkshire Airlines and experience the height of sophistication in Leeds city centre at night.  Flights leave Leeds city airport every hour and arrive at Leeds city airport  20 minutes later, because if you're a Yorkshireman, Leeds is the only place in the world worth flying to. Yorkshire Airlines also promises a buffet of as as many mushy peas as you can eat, all authentically wrapped in yesterday's newspaper and with in-flight entertainment provided by a man with baggy trousers and two ferrets!

Alternatively, you could fly high with the Blackbirds on a psychedelic pleasure trip to Munich and back without leaving the comfort of your armchair. Smile
