Godzilla Minus One
Though it has a slow start and conducts itself much like a Japanese after-War drama, this prequel to Ishirō Honda's 1954 masterwork is the best rendition of the franchise since the Heisei series of the 1990s. Dealing with the realities of postbellum Japan, the discovery of a constantly growing sea organism forces citizens & ex-sailors to handle the deadly beast themselves without help from a war-weary U.S. Top shelf sci-fi drama without the sentimental nonsense present in so much kaiju cinema. Surprisingly satisfying, and recommended. |

Porco Rosso - good fun
Earwig and the Witch - disappointing in both story and animation The Sword and the Claw - 70s Turkish historical action, absolutely brilliant, a lot like a kung fu or wuxia film, only set in ancient Turkey From Beyond - body horror classic, slimy and disgusting fun Count Yorga, Vampire - boring vampire film Trader Hornee - funny nudie spoof of jungle adventure films. "It's Horn, the e's are silent!" The Acid Eaters - I couldn't figure out if the trip was good or bad? American Splendor - brilliant biopic of comics writer Harvey Pekar Early Man - from the makers of Wallace & Gromit, fun stuff with superb animation

It's a New England prep school apparently and the relase date in the UK is 19 January 2024 so I will need to wait a little longer.

Silent Night, Bloody Night - surprisingly dark and twisted proto-slasher, starring Mary Woronow and featuring other Warhol Superstars as well.
Triple 9 - dark and violent action thriller, very good. See No Evil - blind woman vs. psycho killer. Giallo-ish and quite silly in the end. Curse of the Demon - horror classic. Psychological horror parts works well, supernatural ones much less so.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon: Part One A Child of Fire Sci/Fi (Sofia Boutella, Ed Skrein, Djimon Hounsou) 4.5/10 YAWN !!! Zack Snyder pours all his DC cred into this Star Wars wanna be Saturday afternoon matinee. The movie has lackluster dialog, a weak, overdone plot and few truly interesting characters. The fact that he had to use an entire movie to set up the 'real story', which I assume they'll present in Part two, and spent this one 'building the team' (Justice League anyone?) was a real disappointment. It has all the visual capacity of hisbetter movies, but none of the substance. Recommended only if you are seriously bored.

^Seems to be a general opinion
Never been a massive fan of Snyder anyway, Batman v Superman was virtually unwatchable in my opinion, Sin City 2 was not as good as the original film and Watchmen was basically just okay but lacked any real flare (IMO). However he does have the biggest dosconnect in Hollywood between fans and critics. His films do really well box office wise but often get panned by critics. I doubt I'll ever watch this as I don't subscribe to Netflix but I can see why they would want to put this film out.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes - It takes place when the future President Snow is but a teen. I've read the book and despite the movie being 2hr37 it seemed a bit rushed to me. Everything was covered but skimmed over too - a TV series would have done the story much more justice. 6/10

Leave the World Behind - I really enjoyed this one. 'A family's getaway to a luxurious rental home takes an ominous turn when a cyberattack knocks out their devices, and two strangers appear at their door'. The cinematography was splendid, great acting and script too; it's all been seen before, but this was a little different. The Tesla scene was a wtf moment 8/10

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire A Zack Snyder movie, supposedly a Star Wars contender. It looks incredible but it lacks in pretty much every other department. A shame as I was really looking forward to this. Part 2 may save the day I guess. 5/10

Watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy with family during holidays. Not bad, even with all the cut corners and emphasis on action and violence.
Also a random giallo trilogy: Torso - good and violent fun, maybe closer to a slasher film actually. Black Belly of the Tarantula - the best thing was the name along with Morricone soundtrack. A real bore that only came to life in its poliziotteschi kind of moments. Hatchet for the Honeymoon - visually excellent as you should expect from Mario Bava, but gets too silly in the end.

Tales of Ordinary Madness - 8/10 I heard Pauline Kael mention this movie during an interview, and for
some reason, I stopped to type in the few she did mention onto my IMDB
watchlist. When I looked this one up, I had to check it, being a fan of
Ben Gazzarra, and I was hooked. This movie hit close to home.
Has anyone seen this movie? I saw it online yesterday and I'm still
thinking about it, and I don't know anyone who has seen it, so if you
have, I'm curious what you thought about it.. This is one Charles
Bukowski adaptation to movie I liked. Maybe the only one.

Freelance with John Cena (who was brilliant in the hilarious Peacemaker). This movie is supposed to be a comedy/action flick. However it severely lacked in any humour and the action couldn't compensate for that. Sadly, quite a poor effort overall and instantly forgotten. 3/10

Saltburn 2023
It's been a long time since I've hated a film as much as this. It's a stab at lifting the lid on the obscenely rich (''The English Aristocracy'') and is set in 2006 for some reason best known to the writer and director Emerald Fennell. She apparently likes to write ad hoc and throw stuff in as you go. It showed. It has some truly disugsting (and even worse, annoying) scenes. Destined to become a cult film that will be poured over and revered in years to come but for me it's a sad waste of good actors such as Carey Mulligan and Rosumand Pike. Can I give it a minus score?

The Creator - This should have been great. A pretty decent story, great effects and the script wasn't bad. But it didn't click with me, as with others that I've read reviews from. I think what spoilt it for me was John David Washington - he's not a good actor and severely lacks any charisma. Another actor in the main role would have improved the movie immensely. Another movie he starred in, Tenet, was poor as well - may be that was him too. A shame as this film could have been an epic. 6/10

^ I liked Tenet , especially as 'time' movies go which tend to be tedious.
There was also Creator, a good little film from the early '80s with Peter O'Toole as a scientist trying to re-grow his dead wife. |

I didn't like Tenet either although I like most Christopher Nolan films.
There have been some good 'Time' movies especially Looper which I loved and even that thing with Tom Cruise (Edge Of Tomorrow?) was actually good.
