The Light of Night (Suite) By the Light of Night: By the light of Night, I’ll be loving You Oh don’t you know it Here, up in the light of night, sleepless I’m alone Thinking of all the thing that I’ve said, and things I’ve done wrong If only something could’ve been different, If only I’d ’ve thought Otherwise we’d be getting along Again, I sit here wonderin’, awakened in the haze Sitting in my stupor, drunken in a daze If only something could’ve been different, If only I’d ‘ve thought. Words could’ve been had, darling And Lessons could’ve been taught Now I’m much wiser (Though some might not agree) You think that you’d be different, you think that you’d be new By the Light of Night, I’ll be Loving You! Hup! Hazy Noon: Sitting on a blanket in the middle of June Cold Summers, Hot Nights, Hazy Noon The time to Kill? Nevermore Thirty years in the Garden of Eden Should’ve taught you that I thought you’d be a wise girl I thought that you’d moved on To think it’s all so simple Only I, the fool Now my head is so much clearer, Through phasing of the distance And in the hazing of the sun Hazy Noons lay low down, and drift softly to bed Crystal Dusk: The day is finished, the sky is (oh so) clear By the light of night I’m thinking About the dark of day my dear Crystal clear red sunsets A child’s final cheer Musing over letters And thinking over lines The poets hand grows aching Tired, through the night Writing about his issues Working through his fears Thinking of the Crystal Dusk The page is soaked with tears The day fades Oh so dimly, The sky once more quite clear To spend my lives among the sleepless Upon that Kitchen Chair Dusk is a feeling, A time for love and cheer If only you’d been different, You’d be here, my dear Now you’re just a memory A musing of the past Something to think about A sail without a mast Sleepless Upon my Kitchen Chair: Sleepless I stand nodding Staring at the pen A record scrapes beside me A burning paper sheds The moon eclipsed The sun stands still, I slowly fade away To the sins I have knowingly done Of the time I thought I had Now the horsemen lead their charge As my trainwreck slowly fades Away… Away… Away… Away… The Golden Hour Turns Crimson: (Instrumental) By the Dark of Day: In the Darkness of the Day Only held together by the arms of the almighty I glance around me, not a thought between my eyes or head Now, the time of it has passed, and the future of now is here The sky is clouded, and no longer crystal clear In the Darkness of the Day Only glanced upon by those willing to transcend I make myself start moving, lest I be in the open I stare at something, but it’s not made clear to me A mountain slowly moving, forward from the sea In the Darkness of the Day Only stumbled upon by he who remains I keep on sprinting, as the mountain catches me I feel my body floating, I feel my muscles melt Altogether painless, though something almost felt In the Darkness of the Day Something slowly stirs There’s a single thought now in my head My mind no longer hazy, an image crystal clear A face that’s slowly smiling, a smile of love and cheer It’s only you my dear, you that makes me light A lighthouse in the distance, shining in the night I reach to hold the thought of you, but my fingers can not touch I melt back into blindness, a shell-out of my soul In the Darkness of the Day Myself and I alone In quiet conversation Can only agree upon a solitary point… Epilogue: By The Light of Night, Through Hazy Noons and Crystal Dusks And sleepless Upon my Kitchen Chair By the Dark of Day I’ll be loving you! |

Some more of the famous lyrics I find very socially engaged, and here you might think paradoxical, as they let Satan speak, and yet, he's critical of the evil. Black Sabbath - Lord of This World (excerpt) You're searching for your mind don't know where to start Can't find the key to fit the lock on your heart You think you know but you are never quite sure Your soul is ill but you will not find a cure Your world was made for you by someone above But you chose evil ways instead of love You made me master of the world where you exist The soul I took from you was not even missed ..................... You turn to me in all your worldly greed and pride But will you turn to me when it's your turn to die? (from the album Master of Reality (1971))

Sleep while the sweet sorrow wakes my daydream Sleep while you think of me with Kindness, please remember former days Sweet the song that once we sang, the silent parting ways And you know, and you know And you know, long ago when first we made our promise Empty words, I wonder did you know The laugh that love could not forgive Is gone and tells no more to live And we who look in beauty's love Must now, through all, look back on before Gentle Giant - Think of Me With Kindness

Some very socially-engaged lyrics are these about the time of martial law introduced in Poland in 1981, mainly with the purpose to suppress the free trade union and reform movement Solidarnosc:
Brygada Kryzys - "Too Much" (excerpt) They blocked all the roads They cut all communication Set seggregation camps For ideo isolation They shoot us in mines They beat us in the streets It's their daily bread They want us to eat And I never never knew I could Hate so much Hate so much Too much too much too much (from the album Cosmopolis (1992)) While some others may seem to have learned much from the Stalinist methods. Procol Harum “Fires (which burnt brightly)”
This war we are waging is already lost
The cause for the fighting has long been a ghost Malice and habit have now won the day The honours we fought for are lost in the fray Standards and bugles are trod in the dust Wounds have burst open, and corridors rust Once proud and truthful, now humbled and bent Fires which burnt brightly, now energies spent Let down the curtain, and exit the play The crowds have gone home and the cast sailed away Our flowers and feathers as scarring as weapons Our poems and letters have turned to deceptions |

"The Night Run" by Atmos
Every night it's a new set of comprehension Lost in the deep blue lines of suspension There's blood stains on my pillow It stains me in my dreams There's a prophecy that's written on my bedroom wall And I'm always far from knowing what it means! And I'm looking for a meaning in the sky It's lurking away from my prying Visions of the light Now it creeps away to the darkened corner of my drowning mind It's all the same to them.. when you're running in the night! Flying in the waves, mid the hurricane mind Still makes more sense that always flying blind I'm just trying to find a better place to lay my head I've slept in many monsters berths Sometimes I've dreamt I've begun sinking My own damn fault, what was I thinking? Slowly, but now quickly returning to Mother Earth Underground now, still barely breathing An altar with my heart still beating My chalice fills me with the nectar of my youth It's just another way of finding out the truth! Sometimes I can't remember What's lurking behind the dark Whether it be a mirror or a monster ‘neath my mind. Creaking hallways, corridors of thinking He's a projection of my own design His breath signals the beginning of the end Now what do I do? Keep on dreaming? Lest I should die soon? It doesn't matter when you're running in the night! I've run through corridors of cobwebs That rack the hallways of my brain The monsters there are trailing right behind me…. It's all the same to them… When you're running in the night! Is he the reason for your lack of vision? Is he the reason for your indecision? Is he the reason you don't know where to fly to? Is he the reason you know what it's like? When your feet are aching… AND YOU'RE RUNNING IN THE NIGHT! Black Mirror tell me what you're seeing Black mirror tell me what's you're being Black mirror tell me what I'm feeling I found you there at the beginning of my doom… You sat there shrouded in the corner of my room… I saw you there and slipped into your trance…. I saw you there and we.. began to dance… Black Mirror tell me where to die to Black mirror tell me what to cry to Black mirror tell me where to run to in the night! You saved me from the monster of my mind… You saved me from what I'd left behind You took me to your secret garden where the flowers start to blossom.. You showed me your secret garden fountain where there at the bottom I saw myself already sleeping… I felt an odd-ball, a pervert for my peeping.. Black mirror, tell me why I'm dreaming Black mirror tell me what you're meaning Black mirror tell me why I'm dead! Back now and I am barely breathing Back now I've finally caught your meaning The Black Mirror has receded to the back Of my brain and it's armies no longer attack And cause me pain… The bloody pillow remains a Crimson red It's a sorrowful place to lay my head Black mirror's now taken in flight Ingrained upon my mind And I'll see him again When I'm running in the.. Night |

Now, these are some great lyrics and not only socially-engaged but concerning the present state of the human civilization: Flower Travellin' Band - "Hiroshima" Once upon a summer day In their midst, a mushroom grew They never saw They never, never knew They're walking on the street Making shadows on the wall They're sitting on the steps Melting into stone Children of the mushroom Aren't we all, aren't we all (from the album Made in Japan (1972)) |

Here some flower power lyrics but in a more hard-edged version: Deep Purple - "No No No" (excerpt) Really hate the running Really hate the game Looking at them all I wanna be unborn again .............. Must we let them fool us? No no no Have we got our freedom? No no no Is it getting better? No no no Do we love each other? No no no Must we wait forever? No no no no no .............. The washing's getting dirty the air is getting thin It's all in such a mess that no one knows where to begin They talk about creating but all they do is kill They say we're gonna mend it but they never will Poison in the rain but they say No no no we ain't to blame It ain't us Must we let them fool us? No no no Have we got our freedom? No no no Is it getting better? No no no Do we love each other? No no no Must we wait forever? No no no no no (from the album Fireball (1971) which I surely love)

Peter Hammill Flight: (Excerpt)
I always forget how crazy things are Breaking into cold sweat on the white-hot coals I want things to be fast, down to the power-dive; It was then that I knew I'd been thoughtless, |

Another song with obvious connection to the flower power ideology: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - "Lucky Man" (excerpt) White lace and feathers They made up his bed A gold covered mattress On which he was laid Ooh, what a lucky man he was He went to fight wars For his country and his king Of his honor and his glory The people would sing Ooh, what a lucky man he was A bullet had found him His blood ran as he cried No money could save him So he laid down and he died Ooh, what a lucky man he was (from the debut album (1970))

Here's a song by Bob Marley which I can be much in doubt about whether still to consider it as an expression of flower power: Bob Marley & The Wailers - "Crazy Baldhead" (excerpt) Them crazy, them crazy We gonna chase those crazy Baldheads out of town Chase those crazy baldheads Out of town I and I build the cabin I and I plant the corn Didn't my people before me Slave for this country Now you look me with a scorn Then you eat up all my corn We gonna chase those crazy baldheads Chase them crazy Chase those crazy baldheads out of town Build your penitentiary, we build your schools Brainwash education to make us the fools Hate is your reward for our love Telling us of your God above We gonna chase those crazy Chase those crazy bunkheads Chase those crazy baldheads out of town (from the album Rastaman Vibration (1976)) |

Hi, I was just looking again, and was ready to post something ... but I wanted it to ge original, not something that has already been done ... so, I'll pass since the likelihood of it being read or appreciated is not listed along all the famous songs listed on this thread. There won't be any appreciation for it!

Area's lyrics could be quite serious business, here translated to English: Area - "Gioia e rivoluzione" (Joy and Revolution) (excerpt) I sing for you who come to listen to me I play for you who don't want to understand me I laugh for you who don't know how to dream I play for you who don't want to understand me There is a light in your eyes That warms my mind With the sound of the fingers We fight a battle Which brings us in the streets Of the people that know how to love ( https://lyricstranslate.com/en/gioia-e-rivoluzione-joy-and-revolution.html ) (from the album Crac! (1975)) Edited by David_D - July 01 2024 at 12:33 |

Maybe the most radical political Prog lyrics ever were recorded by Hawkwind in late 1972 and originally released as a single in the UK in July 1973 (even reaching no. 39 on the UK singles chart) and in 1976 on the compilation album Roadhawks. They're saying no less than: Hawkwind - "Urban Guerilla" I'm an urban guerrilla I make bombs in my cellar I'm a derelict dweller I'm a potential killer I'm a street fighting dancer I'm a revolutionary romancer My rising sun is cancer I'm a two-tone panther So let's not talk of love and flowers And things that don't explode We've used up all of our magic powers Time to do it in the road I'm a political bandit And you don't understand it You took my dream and canned it It is not the way I planned it I'm society's destructor I'm a petrol bomb constructor I'm the people's debt collector I'm a cosmic light conductor So watch out Mr. Business Man Your empire's about to blow I think you'd better listen, man In case you didn't know Edited by David_D - July 19 2024 at 06:23 |
