Manfred Mann's Earth Band, first prog band I got into. Still love to listen to Nightingales & Bombers and various others.
Second are probably Mogwai (Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will). My machine offers lots of artists whose first name starts with M. Not sure how many with M family name I'm missing; curious to see what others list. PS somehow I missed Magma (MDK), which are about as strong as Mogwai in my collection.

I also never got the hype for The Mars Volta (similar to my view on Rush); their name suggests they should be doing something along the Space-rock or psych circuit, but sound like they get their rocks off on aimless racket and impenetrable noise! I wonder if they will tell you they're a partial jazz outfit too

MAN - Back into the Future (added above). The best yodeling this side of the earth with a choir ... "C'mon" in this album is incredible. MAN - Be Good To Yourself At Least Once a Day. Great LP, with fold out and maps of various rock/jazz/folks and where they came from!

Origin Of Symmetry was the reason they were included in PA at all and is generally considered their prog album. I know there were 'proggers' who liked them until Black Holes at which point the pop side started to emerge more strongly and Matt Bellamy seemed happy to veer away from comparisons to prog bands ('we are prog but without the 25 minute guitar solos' was one of his quotes I remember. Absolution is a brutal and brilliant album , one of the best of this century 'prog' or not. IMO ( and I quite like the artwork for Sing For Absolution  ) |
