I never understand why people advocate getting rid of genre labels. Categorizing, discriminating and labeling things is what humans do, as a way of saying "this set of things is different than that set of things". Yes, it can be imprecise, fuzzy and confusing at times, but it is a concise way of describing those sets of things.

The key is getting the right level of abstraction. If the label is too broad, then most everything is in the set (it doesn't discriminate). If the label is overly precise, then nearly nothing is in the set (it over discriminates). Anyone who has a background in pattern recognition, linear discriminant functions, neural nets, etc. will appreciate that observation.

I can only imagine that the author of the article is part of the modern music generation who have over discriminated. Just look at Every Noise At Once to see that there is apparently a difference between Minimal Melodic Techno, Electro House, Dark Electro Industrial, and hundreds of other sub-sub-genres of modern music. It is clearly over-discriminated. Getting rid of those (or "binning them") as the author suggests, I think is a wise move. Getting rid of genres altogether is not.
