I said something similar before but I'll say it again. Prog didn't make some big comeback in the 90s. It was still largely underground just like in the 80s. I know there's this big conception that prog came back to life with Anglagard or Dream Theater or whatever but it only made the older fans pay attention more. Nothing more and nothing less imo.

I once made a trash list of Thrash Metal, Death Metal & Black Metal which all belonged in the bin.

^ I think you missed the - awkward, maybe - point of this thread: venting unpopular opinions about prog. Not very elegant, I agree, but it could be worse: The most popular prog bands since the 90s are not progressive at all... ![]() |

That's harsh, there's metal out there much much worse than thrash. And I've heard my share of thrash I disliked (a lot of time poor vocals or badly produced), but I still would never be harsh on the genre. (I made a thrash list on a metal site at some point, still came up with 70 something albums I thought were great).

I'm going to agree with this one, how much further can it progress? we need someone to come again and push the boundaries, it that's still possible

Abacab is the second best Genesis album. ![]() Most "popular" prog made since the 90s is not really progressive. Thrash Metal should be called Trash Metal. |

'Pictures at an Exhibition' is a better live album than WBMFTTSTNE.

Going for the One is better than Relayer, Fragile, and The Yes Album

Helmut Koellen's solo album "You Won't See Me" is the great, undiscovered Prog related record. Only released once, after Koellen's death, in 1977, and never reissued in any format, it contains what could-and should-have been a big Rock anthem, the song "Main Street".
VDGG's album "Pawn Hearts" is a masterpiece, but their other recordings are not in the same league as this great album. The great, under-rated Italian prog album is the one time recording by Triade entitled La Storia di Sabazio. The musicianship within is nothing short of brilliant, but obscured by time. The two great Yes recordings are The Yes Album and Fragile. What came after from the band is not as good as they. |

The best Scandinavian band is Freak Kitchen. Very colorful, fun, heavy, and great lyrics.
A shame PA has rejected them for inclusion twice, at least. |

Ripping off means plagiarism which I do not think happened here. KC was an influence, nothing wrong with that.

The Ummagumma studio album is better than The Dark Side of the Moon.

Furthermore, Änglagård somehow sound like they were compelled to play prog-rock, much like the majority of those other Scandinavian prog-rock bands. Also, although I'm sure they adore the genre, the Scandinavians seem to be forcing the dark side of prog-rock instead of its bittersweet and colourful nature. I mean, instead of appreciating the prog-rock genre's vibrant scenery, it seems like many of them pushed the one-dimensional atmosphere of dark wave and gothic rock into their take on prog-rock. It causes a good portion of Scandinavian progressive music to be dull and colourless.

Änglagård played some vintage keyboards, of course, and they had "complexity'', but after listening to the album a few times, there's nothing particularly memorable about it. There's a lot to complain about regarding its production as well. "Hybris" is just one of a number of extremely overrated prog-rock albums from Scandinavia.

You said "extremely overrated". That's a superlative if I may say so. It's all subjective, I think Änglagård's Hybris is better than all the albums you mention here. I would say TFK are overrated, but that's just my take on the band. Also TFK has quite a few imitators. It's become a bit predictable. But i don't think the entire scene is overrated. |
