Welcome to the wonderful world of Danish Prog where you'll find everything under the Blue Sun and more besides with something to suit everyone's tastes, whatever your particular Svartbag may be. No matter whether you Ache for Symphonic Prog, or desire a Blast Furnace of Psychedelic Rock, or would rather explore Jazz Rock/Fusion, the world is your Secret Oyster. I'll only draw the line at including Danish Avant Prog and the Wuthering Heights and lowlights of Head-Bang & Olufsen Metal. Some of the Danish sizzlers to be featured here in the coming Days ahead are as rare as a Mythic Sunship, whilst others will be as familiar as a Savage Rose (especially to David). it's surely an Odd Palace of prog with no Obstacles in the way of finding something for My Beloved too. Either way, it'll make a nice change from watching Art Cinema on my Astral TV. Finally, if there are any mistakes in the Danish Prog list below, then just put it down to Causa Sui, Etcetera.

Cyclus 7 by Ache and s/t by Blast Furnace are IMO the best. Fun fact: I've sampled bits from the drum solo in Toytown by Blast Furnace countless times in my hip hop stuff.

My favourite albums are: Ache (DK) - De Homine Urbano (1970, quite interesting Prog-historically and an example of rare Danish Symphonic) Bazaar (DK) - Bazaar Live (1978, Prog Folk with East European, Turkish and Middle East influences (not on PA)) Burnin’ Red Ivanhoe (DK) - W.W.W. (1971, one of the most internationally appreciated Danish Prog bands) Secret Oyster (DK) - Sea Sun (1974, my absolutely fave Danish band since high school) Edited by David_D - January 05 2024 at 06:23 |

^ Thanks David. Bazaar is another band to add to my Danepack, and Secret Oyster are the great Danes of Jazz Rock.

Sounds like a very good idea to me. Bazaar is one of the most important Danish progressive bands, and yes, surely progressive music. About Secret Oyster I'd say, they're on borderline of Jazz-Rock and Progressive Rock. ![]() |

I can also tell about Bazaar that they were one of the few progressive bands, I digged in the 1980s - which of course doesn't make them less important.

Denmark was the "greater Scandinavia" prog leader back in the 70's, but has been trailing by a lot in the last three decades, despite those listed in PP's list Ache Symphonic Prog 1970-1977 Alrune Rod Psychedelic Rock 1969-1974 Blast Furnace Psychedelic Rock 1971 Blue Sun Jazz Rock/Fusion 1970-2001 Burnin' Red Ivanhoe Jazz Rock/Fusion 1969-2013 Coronarius Dans Jazz Rock/Fusion 1970-1975 Culpeper's Orchard Eclectic Prog 1970-1977 Day of Phoenix Psychedelic Rock 1970-1972 Dr. Dopo Jam Jazz Rock/Fusion 1973-1981 Efterklang Post Rock 2004-2021 Furekaben Prog Folk 1970-1971 Midnight Sun Jazz Rock/Fusion 1970-1974 Secret Oyster Jazz Rock/Fusion 1973-2019 The Old Man and the Sea Crossover Prog 1972-2023 From Paul's list, : Bands I still want to investigate Bands I heard (via library system) and never wanted to buy bands I own album(s) Favorite not really interested by the rest

Something is forgotten in the state of Denmark.... We all know that Denmark is famous for Lurpak butter, Danish bacon, the Little Mermaid, Bang & Olufsen and Lego bricks, but Denmark is also famous for prog, at least here at ProgArchives it is anyway, so here goes nothing with a complete A-Z rundown of Danish Prog from the archives. Some say Scandinavian Prog is overrated, but far more likely, it's not even rated at all, as I suspect most people outside of the progosphere never knew Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish Prog even existed. Am I Finnish? No, I'm just getting started.

Hi
Can I have my cinnamon/raisin roll/pastry with maple topping? Tastes much better than the music! And somehow I remember the taste of the roll a lot better than some music! Isn't that weird?

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Yes, so long as you spread it with Lurpak butter. In the meantime, I'm Aching to listen to the first artist on the Danish pastry playlist.

A-Z of Danish Prog Artists
ACHE Do you Ache to hear some new Symphonic Prog? Are you tired of listening to your old Genesis and YES albums? If so, why not given Ache a listen - surely the best Symphonic Prog band that no one's ever heard of and the best thing to come from Denmark since Lurpak butter. I'm spreading some love for the magnificent sound of Ache, as three out of four albums are in English, and three out of four housewives say they prefer Lurpak butter to margarine. You'll discover Ache are as tasty as Danish pastry, which just leaves me to say "Blah Som Altid" (translation: "blah as always") as they say in Copenhagen, probably. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 03 2024 at 14:47 |

A-Z of Danish Prog Artists
AFENGINN* Russian collusion!?? This Danish klezmer folk band sound remarkably Russian to my ears, especially on their third album "Reptilica Polaris" (translation: "Polar Reptilian"). Afenginn have been described as a b*****d ethno band with Norse melancholy and cheerful madness, which seems a fair assessment, where "cheerful madness" indicates this merry band of klezmaniacs may appeal to fans of Robert Fripp and King Crimson. Anyway, if you only listen to one Afenginn album, then why not give "Klingra" a fair hearing where Afenginn add another string to their bow - so to speak - with the Danish String Quartet providing delightful accompaniment. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * You'll find Afenginn listed under Avant Prog/RIO here on PA.

That's good to know. To clear up any misunderstanding, "Years Active" just means the years between an artist's first album and their latest album, so any of those 65 Danish artists listed could potentially be still active now in 2024.
