let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Hello ladies and gentlemen I ask your forgiveness in advance, and I hope you will have patience with me for what might sound like a stupid quest to some of you. I would also like to ask your forgiveness in case this is the wrong subsection of the forum to make this post in. Forgive me for reviving an older thread as well, but I consider this band New Wave all the way through. I'll get straight to it: I have always had a great interest in music throughout my life, and I find myself desiring to make a contribution to this great art, by pouring my time and efforts into promoting my favorite band of all time: Kliché (also sometimes known as Kliche). I know musical preferences are personal, but to me, Kliche/Kliché is/was the greatest band in the world. That's why I'd like to exert some of my energy in the pursuit of preserving their legacy, not just in my own country, but also on an international scale. Their career as a band was very brief, but what they released during those few years of activity were two flawless and creatively explosive albums. Their live performances were great as well. I recently took the first step in my journey, and went ahead and translated all of the lyrics from their officially released songs into English. I then went on to create lyric videos with these translated lyrics for an international audience. I would like to share these songs here, for the benefit of those of you who are unfamiliar with this band, and for whom this might be akin to discovering an unknown gem. For convenience, I've arranged the songs into playlists that correspond with the tracklists of the albums that the band released. I've also created a compilation playlist that combines all of their releases into a single playlist. In 2006, a commission appointed by the Danish government were given the task to single out culturally significant works of art. They included Kliché's first studio album (Supertanker, 1980) on a list meant to reflect the most important musical compositions in Danish history and culture. The list comprises 12 musical compositions in total, and Kliché's debut album takes up one spot on this list. Their other releases are just as good, in my opinion. Here is a short excerpt, briefly explaining a bit about the band and their sound and expression, taken from Wikipedia: "Kliché was a Danish rock band from Aarhus, known for their avant-garde and postmodern musical style. In performance, the group wore uniforms or overalls in order to reflect a factory, even going so far as to use a metal grinder as an instrument. They ironically quoted Mao Zedong and Buddha in several of their songs and frequently made politically charged music. Their first album Supertanker entered the Danish Culture Canon in 2006 because of its influential status and expression of emerging post-modernity in early 1980's Denmark. Together, the group's postmodern and new wave style was influenced by rock artists of the era such as Kraftwerk, David Bowie, Roxy Music and Brian Eno. In performance, they wore white boilersuits, likely influenced or inspired by the group DEVO, which had been performing with a similar uniform. The band was formed in 1977 by Anders Brill, Lars H.U.G., Jens Valo, and Johannes Voss (Johannes Møller). The group's original members met while studying at the Aarhus Art Academy. Nils Torp, Steffen Brandt, and Hilmer Hassig later played with the group as well. The group effectively dissolved after Lars H.U.G. left in 1985, though other members continued to collaborate under the name Voss/Torp/Brill and later Voss/Torp. Their debut album, Supertanker, was released in 1980 by Medley Records. As a work of social commentary, the supertanker was used by the band as a symbol of mass consumption. The album provides commentary on consumerism and is critical of prevailing political ideologies. In particular, their song "Masselinjen" is a direct and obvious commentary on Mao Zedong's mass line. It is a ten minute long piece with only one lyric: a direct quote from Mao stating “the people, and the people alone, are the motive force in the making of world history” (Danish: “Folket og kun folket er drivkraften i skabelsen af verdenshistorien”). While Danish rock of the era was often politically charged, Supertanker was a revolutionary work of social commentary because it employed ambiguous lyrics and ambient sounds to communicate its message. The album's musical style was pioneering in its use of exposed synthesizer sounds, distorted guitar, instrumental pop, and an overall focus on atmospheric tonal quality rather than pure melody. The album was formally entered in the Danish Culture Cannon in 2006 for its unique impact on the Danish post-modern movement during the 1980s. Kliché's second album, Okay Okay Boys, was released in 1982 under the same label. The album was a stylistic continuation of their first, with similarly socially critical lyrics. Production began soon thereafter on a third album, but this was never completed. The band in effect dissolved in 1985 when Lars Hug left the group to pursue a solo career. The remaining members of the band continued to collaborate under different names during the late 1980s. A compilation album, De Samlede Klichéer, was released in 2010." Read more at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klich%C3%A9 If anyone is interested, I can also send you links to the very scarce live performance footage that I am familiar with (audio and video bootlegs, as well as professional recordings). I can also send you links to official music videos. Without further ado, here are the links to the playlists with lyric videos that I've created: Supertanker (debut album, released in May, 1980) Okay Okay Boys (sophomore album, released in 1982) Two songs from Pære Punk ("Pære Punk" was a Danish compilation album, featuring various Danish punk bands. This compilation album was originally released in April, 1979. The album featured 20 tracks in total, with only two tracks contributed by Kliché. I've collected those two Kliché tracks here.) Collected Klichés (my compilation playlist, comprising all of the above releases in a single playlist) If you don't want to listen to an entire album just to see if you'd be into the music, here are a few songs to give you a small sampling. Militskvinder ("Militia Women"), from Supertanker: Havets Blå ("The Ocean's Blue"), from Supertanker: Masselinjen (sometimes also spelled "Masselinien", meaning "The Mass Line"), from Supertanker: Bag De Røde Bjerge ("Behind the Red Mountains"), from Okay Okay Boys: Pil På Himlen ("Arrow in the Sky"), from Okay Okay Boys: Brændende Kakler ("Burning Tiles", referring to the tiles that comprise part of the Space Shuttle thermal protection system), from Okay Okay Boys: Disclaimer: I've translated the lyrics from Danish into English. I am an amateur translator with no professional experience, and I don't hold any degrees in either language. I am a huge fan of the band, and I simply wanted the English speaking world to be able to get a sense of what message the lyrics are conveying. I've tried to stay as close to the literal meaning as possible, but minor adjustments were necessary due to the differences in syntax and expression between the two languages.

Despite my age and when I first got into music I don't own much new wave and was never really into it much. That said here's a few albums I've always liked:
A Flock of Seagulls - Same Duran Duran - Rio The Cars - Same, Heartbeat City, Candy O and Shake it up (never heard Panorama) The Police - Zenyetta Mondatta, Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity Rush - Signals (a little bit anyway) The Pretenders - Learning to crawl Violent Femmes - Same The Fixx - Reach The Beach Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues Maybe some others too. I cheated a little bit by looking at others answers.

I was more a fan of individual tracks than whole albums in this genre limiting to at most one album per artist, in no particular order, including what I would more call synth pop and post punk, but whateverUltravox - Quartet (nothing as better than the song Vienna but as an album I prefer this one) Simple Minds - New Gold Dream Buggles - Age of Plastic China Crisis - Flaunt the Imperfection Joy Division - Closer Red Box - The Circle and the Square Thompson Twins - Into The Gap Greg Kihn - Next of Kihn Prefab Sprout - Two Wheels Good Ian Gomm - Gomm with the Wind Edited by kenethlevine - October 07 2023 at 17:17 |

Most of the post 1985-albums here is absurd to label New Wave. It mostly died out sometime in the mid-eighties, and the bands still active that were once associated with it - had moved on.

It may seem so but the term is still used for bands that use the retro sounds of that era Up to 1990 is legit because certain parts of the world didn't join the party until the mid-80s I agree that by 1985 the actual movement died out but the term for the musical styles that were referred to as new wave continued to be called that

The term New Wave is a rather nebulous one. I'm not sure why Rockabilly revival such as The Stray Cats were included in that at all to be honest. Mostly New Wave refers to angsty pop tunes that feature some punk guitar moves and slick videos. Many of the synthpop bands like OMD and New Order continued this into the 90s even once the initial craze died off about 1985-ish. It's not an exact science. I gave up on that long ago. It's open to a lot of interpretation so i've learned just to roll with it. Paul is famous however for adding totally unrelated artists to genre lists though. Even artists in the New Wave years like R.E.M. aren't considered New Wave even though they kinda are. Go figure!
