Hi,

I would imagine that there is a lot more of this stuff hidden in many places, and it scares me that a lot of folks from the Middle East do not have anything of the like, and more than likely was either destroyed or simply wasted, although I'm not sure that "electricity" is available everywhere in the same quality and capacity as it is in the majority of the western world, which would make the doing of these things tougher all around, and likely not even started. And the same would go for Africa.

Good stuff ... specially for its time!!! I would be curious to what Peter Michael Hamel would have said or heard, since he did so many studies of a lot of eastern music, and likely would have known something about this.

Thanks, M!!  I agree....synths have been around for a while, and Indian musicians are some of the most innovative in the world, so why not?

Not sure about the Middle East, as religious restrictions may have been a considerations....an interesting topic to study!

The samples provided are intriguing, I hope folks visit the page and listen!  BTW, the very first concert I ever attended was Ravi Shankar in Chicago, when I was 12 (55 years ago!).  I was mesmerized!!

Wonderfully interesting! And it is not just about synthesizers (from the bandcamp site): "The audio showcases their various visions for electronic music production, exploring analogue synthesis, tape collages, voice experiments and field recordings revealing a meeting point of Western and Indian avant-garde traditions, and offering a unique insight into South Asia’s post-colonial sonic imaginary."

Thanks for posting this. Thumbs Up

Hi,

Not my first concert but my senior year in high school our arts appreciation class took a trip to Chicago (only 3 hours from Madison), and we spent the day at the Chicago Art Institute, then saw Man of La Mancha with Richard Kiley in the afternoon, and in the evening, my favorite ... Yehudi Menuhin and Ravi Shankar in the series they created called "East Meets West".

The ending of that concert STILL is one of my favorite "movie" bits ... fat old ladies painted to the top, going out of the theater and one of them saying ... "how can all that improvisation be called music?" ... I so want to put that in a movie, but really ... it only fits inside the "Amadeus" film ... or a Ken Russell moment in a film.

The weird side of things is that I never had a problem listening to the Far East stuff, or even the African stuff. I liked the "Missa Luba", and still have that album of "The Pipes of Pan" that Brian Jones put together. Even that early, I was already appreciating a lot of experimental stuff. And when those sounds started showing up in popular music, I thought it was neat, even though many thought it was more noise.
