Lately, I've been pondering about the evolution of Prog Rock. From its early pioneers to the present day, the genre has seen numerous shifts and innovations. I'm particularly interested in understanding how modern Prog Rock bands are incorporating new elements and pushing the boundaries even further.
With that in mind, I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations. Are there any contemporary Prog Rock bands or artists that you believe are carrying the torch and redefining the genre in exciting ways? What albums or tracks should I be immersing myself in to experience this evolution firsthand? |

C'mon, that's as retro as it gets and definitely not pushing the boundaries further. If I understand well the OP's reasoning, we could think that e.g. prog metal and post rock were pushing prog's boundaries a bit further in the 90s. Later on (which doesn't mean it didn't exist before) I think it is mostly in the avant-prog circles that boundaries are pushed. There are a couple of threads recently about "chamber prog" which might be another recent tendency pushing the prog boundaries. As bands, I guess some people on these boards will mention Black Midi. I would mention bands/artists like Yôkaï, Anna von Hausswolff, The Comet is Coming (not on PA, as yet), Oiseaux-Tempête, Secret Chiefs 3, Sonar...

I would recommend SONAR from Switzerland. They've really expanded the use of odd time signatures and polyrhythms to an extent which is both "out there" and yet accessible at the same time. For me, I find them absolutely mesmerizing. Try them out... https://www.sonar-band.ch/ Also look for Stephan Thelan's other works with David Torn and the Fractal Sextet. |

Question to OP: Do you mean brand-new Prog artists, not heard of before, or new music from established (even ancient) Prog artists?
My friend, Colin Carter, ex-vocalist of Peter Banks' band Flash, has a brand new CD coming out! I highly recommend listening to the sample track "Sea of Dreams" on Soundcloud, it is sublime!! |

There are lots of them, from Agusa to Riverside to the Mars Volta to black midi.
I think you can find them pretty easily on some of the threads on this website.
