We have out first "snap" with you and Lewian going for The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows". :) Great song. I like black midi's John L (I got very big on black midi -- nice choice). When exploring Marillion, "Incommunicado" was my preferred Marillion song. It has a strong The Who vibe to my ears which I like. That Muse song is good.. Bit like a Queen of the wild west. I enjoyed the video. And one can always make more and more lists. Edited by Logan - September 05 2023 at 23:37 |

And another from me. I have a few more I would like to list, but I don't want to double-post lists. I hope some others participate, and/or some more who participated try some more lists, and not just so I can keep my lists coming, haha.. I have been checking out all of the music that has been suggested, at least in part, when adding it to the playlist and after. Quite a few mentioned that I already knew and really loved. I like to play the playlist on my phone and I do tend to focus a little more on the more modern of times, and one that is off an album I do not own that I am always really pleased to hear (had heard and liked the track before), is Thank You Scientist's Gigglebutton.
1960s: United States Of America - American Metaphysical Circus 1970s: Soft Machine - Moon in June 1980s: Dün - L'épice 1990s: Radiohead - Exit Music (For a Film) 2000s: Pram - Bewitched 2010s: Mid-Air Thief - Protector 2020s: otay:onii - Blackheart Breakables By the way, of the lesser-known tracks I suggested in these lists that I have not plugged as much as some others over the years, one that I hope some people will check out if they appreciate a kind of space-age loungey Indie art pop with Krautrock qualities (avenues I am so very into) is the Swedish band Komeda's "Borgo" off the 1993 album Pop på Svenska. For those into Stereolab and/or Pram, Broadcast, Vanishing Twin I would think it should likely appeal. This is my favourite track off the album. Thanks to all who have taken the time to make lists. I realise that some don't like to focus on individual tracks, but it does make it so much easier to get more acquainted with what various members of our fine forum enjoy. As said, everyone has posted music I enjoyed. And if this thread keeps going I might indulge myself in writing a bit more about my favourites from each person. here's the playlist, which has become very long (a lot with mine) and I hardly expect people to play though it but some might want to check out some of the music via it (or hear excerpts of a variety). https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4Io3x_4sAEB683bymU0K0er By the way, I had thought about going farther back in years, but then I was looking for some decent quality original recordings from the decade represented which can be hard when you go farther back. But nothing at all wrong with presenting compositions from earlier 20th century even if recorded much later. Edited by Logan - September 06 2023 at 08:05 |

There's such a vast wealth of songs to choose from over the past seven decades that I don't really know where to begin, so I'll go with the only prog band I know of whose albums span seven decades.
1969: YES - Survival 1977: YES - Awaken 1983: YES - Owner of a Lonely Heart 1999: YES - Homeworld (The Ladder) 2001: YES - In the Presence of 2011: YES - Fly from Here 2023: YES - Mirror to the Sky

Thanks Paul, Ozgur and Lewian for the lists.
And Tennyson, it's not cheating, and happy to see Paul around and participating. That said, a reason why i wanted to do this was to learn more about particular likes and tastes from the forum members here by covering various decades thinking that might lead to more of a spectrum of music flavours. I knew Paul really liked Yes for those decades, and also is discography oriented, but the approach is open to people. They can cover as few decades as they like, as few or as many genres and artists from those decades represented as they like, multiple lists.... :) Ozgur, nice to hear some CCR again. I had a friend really into it. I love Midnight Special, and especially a song that is not coming to mind right now. Lewian: I almost went with Astronomy Domine before. Before I saw your post I had started on a another list. I was going to do Björk for the 90s for Isobel or Play Dead (probably the former). Bachelorette, Joga and Human Behaviour are all other particular faves of mine. Instead I will do Gira's Blind even though I had thought to go for something a little less usual from me. I love the 90s. 1960s: Fifty Foot Hose - Fantasy 1970s: The Residents - The Festival of Death 1980s: Kate Bush - Night of the Swallow 1990s: M. Gira - Blind 2000s: Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Storm 2010s: Kosmischer Läufer - Der Traum des Jungen 2020s: Melody's Echo Chamber - Alma_The Voyage EDIT: Forgot to mention in case you (Lewian) or anyone else looks at the youtube playlist that I did not find Battlestations' Tremor on youtube (Lewian's last 2020s pick). Here is the bandcamp page instead for any who might want to listen: https://battlestations-be.bandcamp.com/album/splinters-vol-i-tremor Edited by Logan - September 06 2023 at 20:20 |

Following on from YES, the only other band I know of whose albums span seven decades are The Rolling Stones, although before I feature seven songs from seven decades here, I'll have to wait until The Rolling Stones release their latest album "Hackney Diamonds" in October of this year.

^^ I often answer seriously when people are being sarcastic and facetiously when people are being serious. It annoys the hell out of some people. I used that emoji facetiously as a joke, but it doesn't come off.
I haven't really been into Yes other than some of the classic albums, but that later Yes was sounding better than I expected. Fragile was one of the first albums I bought for myself. I think "Heart of the Sunrise" would have been my 70s pick. ^ As for the Rolling Stones, "Stray Cat Blues" off Beggar's Banquet was my brother's favourite. Not very PC lyrics one might say. My RS choice off the top off my head if just one would be "2000 Light Years From Home" off 1967's Their Satanic Majesties Request. Edited by Logan - September 06 2023 at 23:00 |

^ Thanks Richard, I almost went with "Life on Mars?" in my first list. It's one of my all-time favourite songs. Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack is great. Teardrop is my particular favourite by Massive Attack and led me to falling for Cocteau Twins due to Elizabeth Fraser's involvement. And Ultravox is excellent.
And I just finished listening to Bat for Lashes' Laura. It is lovely. I decided to compile the lists thus far together by poster as I thought it might make it easier to see what we are each into -- the playlist order is different from these user grouped lists because I tried to group the suggestions together from all by decade. ^ That made me chuckle. :)
^^^ Robert (or is it someone else altogether?, oh no, it's both. Sorry....), I really enjoyed listening to that Maudlin of the Well, been ages. Ditto for the Discipline track -- the first thing I heard of Discipline and still my favourite from the band, mind you, it's the only think I can now recall from the band. ;)
Awesome that you checked it out and can appreciate it. It is a super long list, especially with my eight lists, but it's good (for me) to return to, scrub through somewhat and play sections from (say a group of songs in the playlist from the 2020s) or individual selections that I may or may not know. It's a good way for me to listen to music other people like that I might not normally listen to, to have a different context to the music than off its albums, and I like the variety and contrasts. The more who participate then the more contrast I would expect. I did catch the youtube playlist creating bug due to a thematic music series called Interactive Polls at PA (first poll came from james "Lorenzo" baldwin and others picked up on it and made their own -- awesome series) where we would nominate songs, then we would listen to and often comment each other's nominations and vote for our favourites not our own. George (Mathman) started making those for it and it became the norm to have those to aid in listening come voting time. But I liked to mix tapes when I was a teenager. Even if no one else listens, I appreciate putting these together and checking out the music of others. It makes it feel more like a communal sharing experience to me -- I always wanted to create listening room spaces at PA where we share in and can be appreciative of each other's music even if outside our wheelhouses -- and I can discover great for me music this way and expand my horizons. As teenagers, my friends and I would get together and play our favourite albums together. It was a magical sharing experience that I kind of want to recapture in some form here. The Interactive Polls have been most successful in creating those spaces where we listen to each other's music and interact with each other regarding the music. I was thinking before if people might like to choose one track to highlight from their choices here, maybe I could put that into a poll with its own playlist to help us to choose (Interactive Poll style). That said, it might be best to focus on the lesser known entries in the list here for that as it is common in those Interactive Polls for people not to want to vote for that which they already know or know well. --------------------------------------------------------- Please keep the lists coming all (if you want to that is). And maybe some would like to highlight a track from their list or lists for an Interactive Poll (no requirement to participate in the poll even if you do nominate one)? I think it can be an excellent way to expose people to music that you really care about, and that the ripples of appreciation that that exposure may result in can really spread. I have discovered such awesome for me music thanks to PA posters and they have helped to expand my music horizons. And I just love that active and interactive process of listening. And edit: Just to mention again, if covering many decades is too much effort for some, you can cover as few as you want. You could do just one song. Or say do one from the 70s and one from the 90s etc. I would love to see as wide a variety of posters here as possible as well as multiple lists for those who can spare the time/ have the interest. Contributions are much appreciated, and heartfelt thanks to those who put the time into making and presenting lists. Edited by Logan - September 07 2023 at 11:38 |

^ Thanks, Ian. Really great Brubeck choice. We have a "snap" (same choice) with Dirty Boy, one of the, I think, greatest songs (often have thought that this IS the greatest song period). And you have a "snap" with Richard when it comes to black midi's "John L". My black midi Cavalcade choice was "Ascending Forth", maybe because I have a slightly gentler disposition. But who doesn't love ascending fourths?
Univers Zero's Dense is one of my very favourite tracks, and I love that Pink Floyd track. And I had forgotten about that The Comet Is Coming one despite having really liked it -- excellent to re-listen. I know some have issues with Tim Smith's vocals, and I really like this Dirty Boy cover. If I were to do Karoake at a bar/ club as I have in my youth, this is the song that I most would like a big sing-a-long to if I could: And I came across this recently (programmed faux orchestral), love it. And I love the 180 G's Sing to God "a Capella" cover double-album called Singin' to God, with Dirty Boy off it being my favourite. Now that is a labour of love. The man behind the 180 G's also did it for a The Residents album. Sometimes I think you can judge the quality and significance of a band by the quality and love pout into its covers and the love it gets from musicians. Cardiacs, and Tim Smith in particular after his stroke, got so much love and support. Edited by Logan - September 07 2023 at 13:11 |
