Winterskin

Low budget horror from writer and director Charlie Steeds. IMDB rating is 3.7 but I rather liked it. Nasty and rather gory but also suspenseful with a decent twist. 7/10

down in the snowy wilderness and desperate for shelter, Billy Cavanagh is taken in by kooky old lady Agnes, unaware that her isolated log cabin is being stalked by a bloodthirsty skinless creature hellbent on getting inside.

A new horror movie - Nefarious. From IMDb: On the day of his scheduled execution, a convicted serial killer gets a psychiatric evaluation during which he claims he is a demon, and further claims that before their time is over, the psychiatrist will commit three murders of his own. I didn't know anything about this movie beforehand, but gets a half decent score on IMDb, so I thought why not. The acting by Sean Patrick Flanery is excellent and he plays the demon/Edward with great effect, switching effortlessly between roles and interacts well with the interviewing psychiatrist (most of the movie is dialogue between the two). When it had finished I looked it up online. Turns out it was made by a Christian independent production company based on a book by a republican supporting Christian. Some of the comments on the book see it as some sort of a warning if we don't heed the evil amongst us. Ignoring all that pap, the film is quite good and the acting (mostly by Sean Patrick Flanery) is spot on. There is no major twist, but the ending is unexpected and a neat way to finish up. Thankfully not overlong either. 6.5/10

Another new horror movie just now - Cobweb. IMDb says: An eight-year-old boy tries to investigate the mysterious knocking sounds that are coming from inside the walls of his house, unveiling a dark secret that his sinister parents have kept hidden from him. A slow start leads to a manic last 20 minutes. The tense build up is good, but the conclusion is all a bit daft really. All the actors were good enough (the excellent Antony Starr and Lizzy Caplan lead) and the script adequate. But for a horror it just wasn't scary enough and I found it monotonous. A runtime of 88 minutes. Overall a poor effort 4/10

Watched the latest Guardians Of The Galaxy film. Personally I felt it failed to recreate the magic of the first 2 whihc I loved and got just too nasty at times and then copped out with a very silly ending. Also why do the baddies have to speak with a stupid over the top English accent. Way too cliched. Borderline bad film. 5/10

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny I watched it last night. I thought it was all a bit meh. My wife fell asleep half way through so make of that as you will. There were a few funny comments (Phoebe Waller-Bridge's input maybe?) and lots, I mean lots, of chases scenes. The deaths seemed a bit cruel too with little sympathy shown. The ending was daft and the final scenes seemed just glued on to end the series. I actually think the previous movie was better.

Dune

High expectation for this Denis Villeneuve film who can do little wrong (Sicario, Blade Runner, Arrival) and obvioysly very sure footed with sci-fi, probably the studio's 'go to' man after Ridley Scott and JJ Abrams.
I'm not familar with the books at all but sensibly Villeneuve had just stuck with the original book and not gone far into the series. The only problem is that it's clearly meant to spawn a franchise but feels a bit sub Star Wars at times. Good film and interesting cast inc the likes of Charlotte Rampling, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Mamoa (disconcertingly with no beard!), David Batuista and Oscar Isaac. Stellan Skarsgaard (Chernobyl) makes a nice baddy as well. 7/10

Actually I think Lucas got a lot from Frank Herbert, not the other way round.

Good flick, so much more satisfying than the '80s version or the TV miniseries IMO .

The Last Voyage of the Demeter  Most people are likely to recall the ship, the Demeter, that brings Count Dracula to England that is found washed up on the coast of Whitby with all crew missing apart from a loan sailor dead, and strapped to the wheel. Well this story tells of that fateful journey from Romania. Dracula here is not all suave and sophisticated, rather a monster much like the beast from Nosferatu. It progresses as you'd expect with the unfortunate sailors being taken out one at a time to provide sustenance to the vampire during the trip. It's well done and has that necessary scariness all throughout the movie. It won't win any awards but it's a great idea for a film and it's a surprise this part of the story hasn't been told before like this. 7/10

Birdman - well, this was something different for sure. I liked the actors, filming style (long, seemingly uninterrupted takes) and the use of music.

Killing Them Softly - not bad/not great crime flick.

Birdman is a modern classic! The drumcentric score is what makes it really shine IMO!

Filth - I'm a fan of Irvine Welsh and while this is no Trainspotting, it's still a surprisingly good and super funny adaptation of the novel.

Killer Joe - whoa, this was harsh and nasty. William Friedkin still had it even in old age.

The Fog - far from Carpenter's best, but I never get tired of his films.

The Black Demon

just landed on Paramount so thought it would be reasonably entertaining Saturday brainless TV watching. Certainly brainless as well as a massively contrived plot. Family end up on an oil rig near Puerto Rico fighting a giant shark that seems to have some telepathic powers. Could have been a 'so bad its good' type film but instead it's just bad. What's especially laughable is the lame attempt to generate some emotion near the end. 2/10

Barbie - Looked good and started out quite well until it became preachy crap. I'll give it a 4/10. I'll use my wife's exact description when I asked her what she thought - "sh*te".

Cast a Deadly Spell - combination of horror/fantasy/Lovecraft, hard-boiled detective story and comedy. Yes, it's as silly as it sounds and good to watch while getting ready for Halloween.

The Beanie Bubble 2023

Story of the mad craze for stuffed toys that thappened in the USA in the 90's. It didn't quite translate in the UK partly because the guy behind it Ty Warner was adamant that he wouldn't bring the UK in. 'The Bubble' is very much like the housing bubble that caused the market to crash in the 00's bring down a few large banks. This wasn't quite as disastrous in general but left a lot of people out of pocket who put money into these toys as collectibles. Not a particularly interesting story in itself so they ziz it up by concentrating on the women who Warner let down badly. I enjoyed Elizabeth Banks performance as well as Sarah Snook's (she of Succession). It's made in a fun light hearted way and is a good time passer 7/10
