Panic in Detroit played on my morning walk, which triggered the idea for this poll. I suspect that there are a number of songs in the Rap genre that fit the bill. Eminem's Eight Mile and Kid Rock's Detroit Thang come to mind. I was born and raised in the 'burbs north of Detroit. There is no such place as South Detroit, but I suppose that Journey could have been referring to the Downriver area.

Bowie. Detroit orbits Jupiter between North America and Saturn and is home to the foot whoops and all things Lance Parrish and Lou Whitaker.

Motor City Madhouse or Panic in Detroit. Either or.
Also, consider.... Fats Domino - Detroit City Blues Alvin Lee - Detroit Diesel Elizabeth Spivey - Detroit Moan (great old blues) Big Bill Broonzy - Detroit Special (another ol' blues tune) MC5 - Motor City Is Burning

Of those, I only ever saw Mickey Lolich pitch once in a game on TV when he was with the Padres in 1979 against the Phillies. He came in relief, walked one batter (Bake McBride, whom I was a big fan of when I was a kid), and then they pulled him. I didn't realize it at the time, but he held the career strikeouts record for southpaws that was eventually broken by Steve Carlton later in the 1980s. He was a great pitcher.

Not really a great pitcher but he was a true workhorse in an era in which they worked pitchers on 4-, 3-, and sometimes even 2-days rest! Just look at the innings those guys put in in 1971-73! 373 innings--in one year! 36 starts--in one year! 360 strikeouts--in one year! Also one can never forget the Lolich heroics in the 1968 World Series against the Bob Gibson (1.14 ERA--for the whole year!) Cardinals. He won three games while 31-game winner (yes: you saw that correctly: 31 games--in one year) Denny McLain went 1-2. Don't know if Mickey deserves to be in the Hall of Fame (as opposed to Jack Morris, who was THE winningest pitcher in the MLB over a ten year period--he definitely deserves to be in the Hall) though. |

J. Geils was my first real rock concert so I gotta go with "Detroit Breakdown."

My first concert in Motown wasn't until I had moved away and was in college: Nina Hagen Band at some warehouse-converted into bar near Greek Town. (Clutch Cargo's 1982)
The first Detroit area band I ever saw was Art in America--opening for King Crimson--at the State Theater in Ann Arbor in 1982. |

I'm from Michigan, and sad to say, I've never seen a band or artist from Michigan, unless you consider the Eagles (Glenn Frey). Big fan of Grand Funk, Bob Seger, Motown, Alice Cooper, but went with "Panic in Detroit". I don't like Kiss, but "Detroit Rock City" is a cool song.

I'm thinking if Lolich had had maybe two or three more all-star level seasons, he'd probably have a better shot at being in the Hall (I tend to lean more towards inclusion than the writers do). The 68 series was before I was born but I do remember reading about it some time ago. It sounded like it would have been wonderful to watch. There hasn't been a pitcher with 30 wins since McClain (I think Steve Carlton and Bob Welch came the closest with 27). Speaking of workhorses, did you ever get to see Wilbur Wood pitch? He retired before I started watching baseball in 1979 (I was 10 at the time). Agree on Jack Morris being in the Hall. Wish one of those committees would put Lou Whitaker in there. He deserves to be there with his teammate Alan Trammell. My apologies to the original poster for going off topic.
