Instead of VROOOMing on the Autobahn I'll take my Bike...

Otherwise, I was thinking of this one: The Nits - Cars & Cars

When something goes wrong with my car, I think of The Cars "Just What I Needed" .

Voted for DP.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Voted KC.

I once had a flat tire. I ran over what I thought was a leaf, but it turned out to be a rock. Called AAA because my car jack was broke. They put my spare on, then I drove to Walmart to by two new tires. They wouldn't let me have just one tire because there would be uneven wear between a new tire and an older tire on the same axle. Oh well...

Otherwise, only other problem was a bad sensor and I couldn't drive faster than 35 mph. No worries as there are many alternate routes I could take to get home.

This was all in a 2001 Honda Civic which I still own. Almost 180,000 miles. Probably would have made 200,000 by now if it wasn't for the pandemic. I still work remotely, so not sure if I'll ever make it to 200,000.

Thanks for the comments and stories!

I agree that the Gary Numan song would've been obvious, but I tried to build a kind of a story arc from the poll songs (and their titles).

I've had luck with cars (knock on wood). Except for one flat tire years ago this was the only breakdown I've had on the road (more knocks). Once I had a gearbox break down (never trust automatic), also years ago, but it happened in front of my house.

I voted for Kraftwerk, but Gary Numan's Cars would be the first to come to mind, and when I think of Kraftwerk, I often think about Gary Numan due to similarities... Musically, man-machines and replicas... Yesterday I had an hours long conversation with a talkative neighbour who I had not spoken to much before, and then all the neigbours on walks joined in, and were talking about music and he brought up Rush. He said he didn't like Rush except for the song "Red Barchetta", which he thought of as a very interesting song thematically. A Barchetta is a Ferarri model, and red is the colour associated most with Ferarri.

As for breakdowns, they can be so painful. I have gone through quite a few cars and had some horrible ones when I bought second-hand.

One memorable time involving a breakdown was driving with a friend in his car where the car overheated and the engine was wrecked late at night on a highway in the interior of BC (BC is a big place) in the middle of nowhere -- we were 16. He dumped the car and we hitchhiked back to Vancouver with two guys (where we were is about a six hour drive away). We were lucky. They even invited us to join us in eating their cold baked beans.

Another time my car broke down in winter far from home late at night, destroyed the engine. It was due to a bad servicing, but I never got my money back. My last breakdown involved a timing belt breaking which did very extensive damage to the beloved Audi's cylinders I had then -- the timing belt had been replaced a couple of years before.

After that I bought a new Honda Civic (much cheaper to repair if things go wrong too). I'm going to buy an electric car soon.

Queen, although I'm surprised Gary Numan isn't in the poll. Smile

I had some car trouble today. Part of the exhaust pipe fell off.

Here's a poll with some suitable songs. Let us know which one is your favourite and share stories of your car breaking down if you like.
