HOYT AXTON     Best-remembered for his signature song "Della and the Dealer", singing cowboy Hoyt Axton was born in Oklahoma in 1938 before moving to the leafy glades of Laurel Canyon in the early sixties where he played at the legendary Troubadour club in West Hollywood. He saddled up and rode off into the sunset for the final time in 1999. Broken Heart

AZITIS     Orange groves and treasure troves.... Azitis were a psychedelic Christian Rock band from Citrus Heights, California, but this sun-blessed album of religious supplication is no lemon. This obscure  hippie brethren only gathered together long enough to record this one plangent paean to Mother Earth, so I'm guessing they didn't make much of a prophet. Tongue

ASHES featuring Pat Taylor      A Sunshine Pop band from Burbank, California, featuring the honeysuckle-sweet voices of Pat Taylor and Barbara Robison. After this short-lived folksy foursome blew away like dust in the wind, the Peanut Butter Conspiracy arose out of the Ashes. This charming album may not have changed my life, but it's surely brightened up my day with its sunny Californian vibes.  Smile

MARTY BALIN    (1942-2018) Broken Heart      A singer/songwriter originally from Cincinnati, Ohio who shared the stage with Grace Slick as lead singers in both Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship. You may recall Marty Balin performing with Jefferson Airplane at the disastrous Altamont Speedway concert in December 1969, when a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang (who were meant to be providing "security" at the concert) mounted the stage and punched Marty unconscious. THE BALLROOM     Would you care to dance? Another Time maybe.  It's not strictly ballroom though. The Ballroom were a  Sunshine Pop quartet who made joyous sweet music together, which  consisted of L.A. producer Curt Boettcher, along with Jim Bell, Michele O'Malley and Sandy Salisbury. Curt Boettcher later went on to form the close-harmony supergroup The Millennium in 1968, hence the album title, Preparing for the Millennium. Smile

THE BAND       A Canadian-American Roots Rock band, formed in Toronto, Ontario in 1967, consisting of Canadians Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson and American Levon Helm. I'm not sure The Band ever lived in LA. they were from Ontario and gravitated around NY and the East Coast - two of them even dies in Florida.
Only Robertson ever lived in LA. or California

Canned Heat are coming up later, and regarding Jefferson Airplane, they were the only band to play all three of the major music festivals at Monterey, Woodstock & Altamont, and they recorded their landmark Surrealistic Pillow album at the RCA Victor Studios  in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Marty Balin and Spencer Dryden have Laurel Canyon connections too - they were both members of L.A. bands before taking off with Jefferson Airplane. Grateful Dead are another San Francisco band, but I couldn't possibly consider leaving them out of the listings (on Page 2 of this blog) Smile

However, you could include Canned Heat that lived on Topanga Canyon (a few miles west)

Canned Heat are coming up later, and regarding Jefferson Airplane, they were the only band to play all three of the major music festivals at Monterey, Woodstock & Altamont, and they recorded their landmark Surrealistic Pillow album at the RCA Victor Studios  in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Grateful Dead are a San Francisco band too, but I couldn't possibly consider leaving them out of the listings (on Page 2 of this blog) Smile

Yes; by the time of Surrealistic Pillow, there was no recording studios yet in Frisco - surprising as it may seem. At least that's what Tamarkin said in his Got A Revolution book
