I can’t pick one album, but I think it would be something from Steven Wilson, Opeth, Tool or Wobbler. Maybe Riverside could sneak in. The biggest challenge is that I don’t listen as much today to the music I played all the time ten years ago. Today I would be a lot more inclined to pick Wobbler since the haydays of Porcupine Tree, SE solo, Opeth and Tool may be in the past.
I have to say though that there is so much good music made the past 21 years. Prog is by no means dead. Some of it even challenge the best works from the 60-70’s. |

The highest rated albums (as a sum of all the ratings on RateYourMusic and ProgArchives in april 2019) are:
Tool (US) - Lateralus (2001) Opeth (S) - Black Water Park (2001) Porcupine Tree (UK) - In Absentia (2002) The Mars Volta (US) - De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003) Mastodon (US) - Crack the Sky (2009) Only one album from each band is considered, though.

So, those albums can be considered among the very best in a kind of objective, or more proper intersubjective, way of speaking.

I really cannot name only one. I even cannot single out one from a specific sub-genre.

I know Ian already answered that, but PP's case is different, IMHO. I wouldn't call it blatant ignorance on his part, but a certain form of blindness for sure (or close-mindedness) Most "old PA gits" here have at least heard tons of new prog from all-over the planet, but PP is not only claustrophobic time-wise, but also xenophobic (nothing that isn't "English"). His list basically features XXIstC third-rate non-essential albums from 60/70's artistes that are far from their best days, and basically only him would consider plcing them on a best XXIstC list. . My list will stop at 2016 (I guess I should someday update it, as sufficient insight & hindsigth has occured, since we're in 2023, now), and will concetrate mainly on PA-included artistes. There are tons of Jazz-minded albums I have excluded from this list from 2010 onwards. 13 Globalys Globalys Bel 2001 12 P.G.

In my defense, I've been listening to nothing but modern Neo Prog on my Prog Britannia blog for the last five months, having featured 120 Neo Prog artists and 550+ albums there, so I'm not completely stuck in a 1970's time warp, even if it may seem that way sometimes.

I'd be interested to see what you consider 'modern' Neo prog. What proportion is post 2000? |

You should really, really listen to Ben Levin, then. The main creative force behind Bent Knee. Freak Machine is without a doubt one of my top albums.

^ Okay, I'll come up with some international lists for this thread later, but starting closer to home, these are some of my 5-star favourites of British Neo Prog from the 21st century - not including Mostly Autumn.

I haven't handed out as much bread and fish as it first appears. The long list of 5-star albums above only represents about a fifth of the British Neo Prog albums I've listened to so far this year. If I added my 4-star favourites too, the list would be at least three times as long. ![]() I may have gone a bit overboard with Magenta though.

what a good list even if I say so myself ![]() I would now add Frost* - Day and Age. They scratched that itch that really need scratching.
