To be honest, Paul, I'm suprised by your fondness of the Canterbury Scene, or, it could again be an example of that your tastes are more diverse than just being "conservative". I have to admit that Canterbury in general is too quirky for my tastes, and too little rocky. I like very much though the four albums I've listed here, which are The Soft Machine - The Soft Machine (1968)Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink (1971)Khan - Space Shanty (1972)Gong - Shamal (1975) |

DAEVID ALLEN Gong but not forgotten! The magic and the madness of Daevid Allen (1938-2015). Aussie musician Daevid Allen is as firmly rooted in the Canterbury Scene as the Archbishop of Canterbury himself, having co-founded firstly Soft Machine and then Gong, with almost as many offshoots and branches of Gong as Barclays bank. 1971: Daevid Allen - Banana Moon - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kdjWQxGRIYr-7tPLKpl9p9bcuavfjCYJg 1976: Daevid Allen & Euterpe - Good Morning! - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGPRENFJQmJyErt1Uzukp1oh1kiyynGv5 1977: Daevid Allen - Now is the Happiest Time of Your Life - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mfzHH9Ab83_eJFHQc_jqWNiIOj33nJZuQ 1979: Daevid Allen - N-existe pas! - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZOYOaFziLn_llooCsiHUK-8cYc5VrtyN 1982: Daevid Allen - Divided Alien Playbax 80 - http:///www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_ly9kvfq-dUILzIE3_tn8ncp7FR6wbzFs4 1990: Daevid Allen - Ja-Am: Seven Drones - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQZ0SruqsqU 1990: Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth & Harry Williamson - Stroking the Tail of the Bird - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYjWO-XY5eg 1990: Daevid Allen - Australia Aquaria - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nTH9ZjwBZHaPcIBgovxDu7Cl05rsiaKfE 1992: Daevid Allen & Kramer - Who's Afraid? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kxwjEvtPUM 1993: Daevid Allen - Twelve Selves - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nYmsplk_UG-8C3OR4n73lR91LwS7bl3_M 1995: Daevid Allen - Dreamin' a Dream - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqEJOj3Curg 1995: Daevid Allen & Kramer - Hit Men - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k77cMZjWrgKJ24FPtPgK55TEFTJTmRf84 Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:27 |

I was pleasantly surprised too. I like all four of those albums you mentioned. I wasn't expecting to like the quirky music of Daevid Allen though, but Now is the Happiest Time of Your Life is a surprisingly good album.

But regarding the outer artwork of In the Land of Grey and Pink, I would prefer it was more grey and less pink, while I like much the artwork of Space Shanty - I have both as LPs. |

AMOEBA SPLIT Buenos Dias! Amoeba Split are a jazzy outfit from across the water in sunny Spain. Their two albums are split between "Dance of the Goodbyes", featuring a charming senorita on vocals, and "Second Split", which is entirely instrumental, so for me, there's really no split decision over which album is best. Hasta la vista, baby, as they say in Austria. 2010: Amoeba Split - Dance of the Goodbyes - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nwtYq2apl-nXQbvMh-UuxHs9WJ9UQIozA 2016: Amoeba Split - Second Split - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l1JvGcXxZ77o_ak9gUhUSptB3aDCIqzkk Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:28 |

ANTIQUE SEEKING NUNS A strangely-named band with even stranger album and song titles and for whom making quirky, off-kilter music is just a force of habit. Antique Seeking Nuns later morphed into Sangune Hum - a cryptic reference to one of the four Greek humours (or temperaments) in Greek proto-psychological theory, first hypothesized by Hippocrates, so there you go. In the meantime, I'm having a serving of Double Egg with Chips and Beans tonight, both in musical terms and gastronomic terms. What are you having? 2003: Antique Seeking Nuns - Mild Profundities - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l3OfKs7rWgV-A6MEhT5mNBwNagt4N9gW8 2006: Antique Seeking Nuns - Double Egg with Chips and Beans - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kxCfH2SHoylf76-r6pUWu8-9gGpc3jc9E 2009: Antique Seeking Nuns - Careful It's Tepid Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:28 |

KEVIN AYERS (1944-2013) An English singer/songwriter and co-founder of Soft Machine, with more Canterbury Scene connections than the Archbishop. There are many heirs to the Canterbury Scene throne, but Kevin Ayers is up there with the best of them. I'm looking forward to listening to all of Caravan's albums again, including "The Album", and when it comes to the best Canterbury Scene music, Caravan trail behind no one.

2021: Big Hogg - Pageant of Beasts - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lYMCW-wCJb4JwRibIS7D72_7aeWP3dhrA BIG HOGG A Scottish sextet who are a long way from Canterbury, but close to Hatfield, if you catch my drift. Why not go the whole Hogg and check out their entire discography, which shouldn't take long as there's only one of three albums currently available on You Tube. In the rich pageantry of Canterbury Scene music, this virtually unknown, smoking hot band should be up there with the big beasts. Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:29 |

THE BOOT LAGOON A Canterbury Scene band who actually live within sight of the dreaming spires of Canterbury Cathedral, which makes a nice change. The Boot Lagoon are close to Hatfield in musical terms, if not geographically, so you wouldn't want to boot their eponymously-titled EP into the River Stour, although the plain beige EP cover doesn't exactly inspire interest. I'm sure they've made a big splash in Canterbury though, but the prospects for The Blue Lagoon are looking a bit murky in the rest of the country where they're virtually unknown outside of the progosphere. 2012: The Boot Lagoon - The Boot Lagoon (EP) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n9GtUmhXooRYTwYfvktKEseuEEqLKZgmk Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:29 |

A-Z of Canterbury Scene Artists BRAINVILLE There are some bands who come along sounding like no band you've ever heard before and that's certainly the case with the wonky music of Brainville. They're listed here as Canterbury Scene, but this is more like Avant Prog and not to my tastes at all, although I know there are some progheads here who will love this kind of offbeat, experimental music - and if the off-kilter, slightly mad singer reminds you of Daevid Allen of Gong, that's because it is him. 1999: Brainville - The Children's Crusade - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nMvdbzGPRt4WmXrkd1CzcAdN51EVkzzkM Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:30 |
