I'm sure it'll be an absolute stunner! The chances of me not liking it are about as likely as Britain returning the Elgin Marbles to Greece.

A-Z of Greek Prog
AXIS Hey Hey Hosanna! A Greek treat and an Axis of Love with religious overtones, Axis had something of a cult following in Greece (just don't tell Scientologists their religion is really a cult, as they tend to get rather annoyed) Don't worry though, you don't have to don orange robes, shave your head, or prance around in a circle chanting "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna". No, it's simply that with a church organ and heavenly choir in attendance, one can't help feeling a sense of spiritual love and devotion is in order. The opening song "Osanna" is a happy-clappy feel-good song, so feel free to clap and sing along if the spirit so takes you. And with that in mind, I hope you'll abide with me as we say a prayer and give thanks to the Prog Gods on Mount Olympus for giving us this heavenly blessing of Greek Prog:- "Our father, Who art in prog heaven, Give us this album and forgive us our Genesis "Trespass" album, For thine is the kingdom of Prog, And the power and the glory of Greek Prog, Forever and Ever, Amen to that! Ela Ela (Greek for "Hey Hey") is an album for those discerning prog fans amongst us who prefer their prog a little on the lighter side, with music as warm and comforting as a favourite fluffy cardigan, and sounding as comfortably familiar as Aphrodite's Child's first two poppy prog albums. The name of the band "Axis" is a sly reference to Jimi Hendrix, so you can expect to hear plenty of groovy, psychedelic pop tunes along the way with the occasional guitar freak out thrown in for good measure too - and all lightly sprinkled with an unmistakable Greek flavour that's as enjoyable as an evening of plate-smashing at your local Greek restaurant. And the highlight of the album? The final track: "Bad Trip" - a grandiose and magnificent prog spectacular - which you may well have heard before - that has all of the pomp and ceremony of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March at the Last Night of the Proms. Overblown? Maybe. Glorious and magnificent? Definitely! A word of warning: the first two Axis albums are really one and the same album with the tracks listed in a different order, which sounds as dodgy as some of Del Boy's hooky gear down at Peckham market.. Oh, and one more thing: there was a third Axis album, released in 1973, which is still a mighty fine album, but it's something of a witches brew, so it's really one for Jazz Fusion freaks. An edgy and challenging album to listen to maybe, for those who like to dice with danger, but not nearly as hazardous as cooking sizzling sausages on a barbecue at a naturist resort. 1971: Axis - Ela Ela - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b7rl9xfHCk 1973: Axis - Axis - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp4LQr8cAaE The Ten Commandments of Prog:- 1. The Prog Gods are the Lords of Prog and thou shalt have no other Prog Gods before thee 2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image of a classic prog album cover 3. Thou shalt not take the names of the Lords of Prog in vain 4. Remember the Black Sabbath day, for the seventh day is for the Holy worship of prog 5. Honour thy father and thy mother's prog collection 6. Thou shalt not murder a classic prog anthem 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery with a fellow prog fan's husband or wife 8. Thou shalt not steal a prog album 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against a fellow prog fan 10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's prog collection Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 12 2023 at 16:31 |

^ That was one of my shorter reviews, although it looks more like a stream of consciousness than an album review.

BLACK STRAT BAND Kalimera Corfu! The beautiful sun-blessed isle at the northwest frontier of Greece is where these four talented guys hail from. Not much happens on the sleepy Greek island of Corfu, but Black Strat Band are the most exciting thing to happen there since the great naval battle of Arginusae during the ancient Peloponnesian War between the Greek city states of Athens and Sparta. Back to the present day now, and If the name of the band and the striking silver "V" on the album cover conjures up visions of a twin-Strat axe attack of Greek fire and fury - something along the lines of Wishbone Ash's twin screaming diz-busters with their distinctive "V" shaped black Stratocasters - then you may be in for quite a pleasant surprise when you hear Black Strat Band for the first time, with maybe the greatest "Eureka" moment since Archimedes pulled the plug in his bath. This is heavy Blues-Rock that's as cool and laid-back as an ice-cold margarita with a slice of lemon on a sun-kissed Corfu beach whilst reclining in the shade of a beach umbrella. There's no shortage of down and dirty heavy riffing though, so imagine Gary Moore on a Corfu beach with his custom gold Gibson guitar and you'll get the picture. Black Strat is a good solid album of Greek marble with no Achilles Heel, but the real twin highlights of this heavy duty blues-breaking album are the simply sublime "Girl with the Golden Hair" which reaches high up into the stratosphere with music as grand and majestic as the ancient Parthenon in Athens, followed by the anthemic, rabble-rousing grand finale: "Ships of Freedom" which, if you have a vivid enough imagination, brings to mind potent images of Greek galley slaves rising up and breaking free of their chains. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder and that's certainly the case with the Black Strat Band when they came back with the equally strong "Absence" album two years later. Finally, what do they call a resident of Corfu? ..... A Corfiot. Not a lot of people know that, but you don't need the wisdom of Socrates to know that the Greeks are top dog when it comes to prog. 2016: Black Strat Band - Black Strat - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lg6ciYyGldCAUl7sx4mfXJ-tMZiD7nkA0 2018: Black Strat Band - Absence - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_m92gNLZEQu_ty_zgyW5jH4o-Zb8lSi3JI Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 13 2023 at 17:17 |

BORDERLINE SYNDROME Images and Words can't express how heavy this Greek band sounds at times. The Astonishing thing about Borderline Syndrome is they're listed under Eclectic Prog, but with sledgehammer power chords that border on Heavy Metal, especially on their two heaviest numbers, "Innocent and Blue" and the final track, "Descending", which sound like borderline Dream Theater. There's no chance of dreaming your way through this sonic attack either, so better batten down the hatches and secure all loose articles, as this Hellenic quintet are set to raise merry Hell and rattle your crockery. Right from the opening artillery barrage of "In Rainbows", the unrelenting awesome power of this album will leave you wide-eyed and breathless, and with enough latent energy in reserve to wake up the neighbours. This bunker-busting album of heavy construction should come with a hard hat, Doc Marten boots and a high-visibility jacket. The expressive wailing vocalist Sophia Sarri has a unique voice that once heard, you'll never forget, and with the kind of howling banshee vocal range you haven't heard since Siouxsie Sioux first howled and hollered her way into our consciousness. And so, with a thunderous album that's loud enough to Awaken the dead, Borderline Syndrome are set to go the Distance Over Time, especially if you're a fan of Dream Theater. Finally, if you're unlucky enough to suffer from borderline personality syndrome, I can't promise this album will come to your emotional rescue, but it will help to temporarily lift your spirits and give you a nice caffeine boost, without even needing to venture anywhere near Starbucks. 2012: Borderline Syndrome - Stateless - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFP3chLXhcHgHf4u-94AqhowRbd3hM0XH Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 14 2023 at 12:35 |

A-Z of Greek Prog
CICCADA Marble halls and Jaws! If you ever happen to find yourself beetling around the back streets of ancient Athens, then you may just run into this fine band of merry minstrels. Ciccada are one of the heaviest Prog-Folk bands you're ever likely to hear this side of the Peloponnesian peninsula. Their third and most recent album to date is a veritable Harvest of great songs, all fully ripened and sun-blessed with Greek goodness and ready for reaping. Harvest is undoubtedly the best of three albums released so far, which occasionally borders on Folk Metal, sounding heavier at times than any album I know of by Jethro Tull or the Strawbs, even though Jethro Tull once won a Grammy Award for best Heavy Metal band, ahead of Metallica! This is evergreen pastoral folk imbued with the peaceful solitude of Greek marble halls, combined with sudden hammerhead shark attacks of hard and heavy rock, sounding something akin to an iron fist wrapped in a velvet glove, the like of which we haven't heard since Gryphon first graced our airwaves. The delightful music of the Ciccada septet is very reminiscent of Mostly Autumn, so if you're a fan of Heather Findlay, Iain Jennings and Bryan Josh & Co, then you'll be in for a real Greek treat here. In ancient folklore, the cicada beetle was a symbol of carefree living and immortality, and so it is with this free-loving band of Greek troubadours, who deserve to be around for many years yet. You'll be pleasantly surprised to hear all of the lyrics are in English too - the international language of prog (and air traffic control). The charming music of Ciccada sounds as quintessentially English as a game of cricket with strawberries and cream on an English summer lawn, with not a bouzouki or Greek lyre to be heard anywhere. You won't be stumped or on a sticky wicket with Ciccada's previous two fine albums either as they're both real belters and well-above batting average. In conclusion then, the sweet and endearing music of Ciccada is as warm and inviting as a Mediterranean Summer Breeze blowing through the jasmine of your mind, but the lovely sun-blessed album we have here is truly a Harvest for the World. And so, the next time you hear a cicada chirping away in the rainforest, maybe it'll bring back fond memories of Greek band Ciccada, or far more likely, the distinctive yell of Tarzan as he swings on a vine through the jungle, Uh- oh, Chongo! 2010: Ciccada - A Child in the Mirror - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nD0iFd7MtR0X12doLZiom-MpqSEI9gl0A 2015: Ciccada - The Finest of Miracles - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kg4DjfqzAHdhHIxlqUDCp3-dZ4NOc9m5k 2021: Ciccada - Harvest - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nWG_xYXp_MUPgxmRe5RaKmfygwskckFQs Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 16 2023 at 15:32 |

A-Z of Greek Prog CRYSTAL THOUGHTS Tripping the light fantastic! Crystal Thoughts are the most exciting phenomena to occur in the spacetime continuum since cosmologist Carl Sagan first took us on a fantastic voyage of discovery across the Cosmos in his eponymous TV series and book. This incredible album is a cosmic journey of the mind though, only without the psilocybe effect of eating magic mushrooms, and yes, they are indeed toxic, so they're best avoided if you see them growing in your local magical forest. Crystal Thoughts are one of the most obscure and enigmatic outfits ever to emerge from the Greek archipelago, with psychedelic folk music as wide and expansive as one of Demis Roussos' colourful kaftans. Crystal Thoughts only recorded this one outstanding album, and then just as mysteriously disappeared forever and ever into the cosmic aether, elevating the album to instant classic status. Finding this ultra-rare album for sale in your local record store would be almost as amazing as finding the Ark of the Covenant on sale at your local antiques shop. This transcendental treat won't help you escape the surly bonds of Earth, but it may lift your spirits high enough to almost touch the face of the prog gods on Mount Olympus. "Toxic Phenomena in Kosmic Fields" takes us on a magic carpet ride back through time, back to those hazy lazy halcyon days of flowers and beads and butterflies in a psychedelic Garden of Eden, when being gay just meant being happy and carefree. This lovely album has all the glowing warmth of the Mediterranean, combined with the mystery and exoticism of the ancient casbah and with inscrutable song titles as colourful as a florilegium. It's not crystal clear what the final album track "Carovna Pistalka" refers to, but it appears to be a Greek children's fairy tale, and after listening to this beautifully mellow album of spaced-out meditative moods, then maybe you too will believe there are fairies at the bottom of the garden. Then again, maybe not. Either way, this spacey and hypnotic album is as chilled out as a dry vodka Martini, shaken not stirred. "Kosmic Fields" is a good solid album of Grecian alabaster marble and a real diamond gem of psych-folk - and you know what they say about diamonds and longevity. 2011: Crystal Thoughts - Toxic Phenomena in Kosmic Fields - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybVb9aIah-o Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 16 2023 at 15:05 |

DAEMONIA NYMPHE Music and moussaka! Daemonia Nymphe (Latin for Demon Nymph) are an ethnic ensemble of players who sound as authentically Greek as an evening of fine dining and plate-smashing at a Greek restaurant. So what's on the menu tonight? This charming band of nymphs serve up appetizing morsels of dulcimers, pandouras, bouzoukis and Greek lyres, all wrapped together in a tasty pita bread of heavenly voices and tribal percussion instruments. This ethnic blend brings to mind delicate Incantations of Mike Oldfield's music, especially on his folklore-influenced fourth album. So if you're in the mood for a Bacchanalian feast of ethnic chanting, combined with the most authentic assemblage of Greek instruments you're ever likely to experience outside of Athens, then prepare for an enjoyable evening of caroling and carousing with the nymphs. They say that the devil has all the best tunes and Daemonia Nymphe are a devilishly fine band. They're the most exotic musical experience since neoclassical darkwave duo Dead Can Dance first twanged our heartstrings, so if you're a fan of Aussie duo Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, then you're surely going to love the sound of Daemonia Nymphe. "Tyrvasia" offers up a veritable feast of charming Greek folk with some of the finest ethnic music of pure beauty you'll ever hear within the realm of a dying sun. And if you're in an adventurous spirit, then you may like to try a marathon-run of all six of Daemonia Nymphe's albums, where you'll find their latest offering "Psychostasia" is the Olympic gold medallist in terms of excellence with performances as polished as Greek marble. 2002: Daemonia Nymphe - Daemonia Nymphe - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kNXqIiqbPz-lls6ixpjkR8Jrq7hLG8kTI 2004: Daemonia Nymphe - The Bacchic Dance of the Nymphs - Tyrvasia - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mxVTBraFHfyoyv6Prh-B0RFJxK0AJAzLc 2005: Daemonia Nymphe - Remixed - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nLt9nwGxmekPX7F7-2sg3rFjTsMoegO2E 2007: Daemonia Nymphe - Krataia Asterope - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lS96BKZ6lD_iCHRqTXolYlObB1DLQOLKs 2013: Daemonia Nymphe - Psychstasia - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mLbwkObbhMI5Qr0mwc-KRE4Lx4U0nyn10 2016: Daemonia Nymphe - Macbeth (soundtrack) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_m9vkD9RfBEWTFY7h4VU9FTXSMYgOV9idE Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 18 2023 at 07:56 |

DARNAKES It's written in the stars! This merry band of astrologers are the most authentic Greek experience you'll have since Anthony Quinn first wooed Irene Papas in Zorba the Greek. Darnakes hail from Greece's second city of Thessaloniki, where the days are long and the hot sultry nights are filled with the sound of love and laughter, and if you happen to wander near a local Greek taverna and hear the sound of Balkan balalaikas, then if you venture inside, you may find dancers merrily cavorting and carousing in gaily-coloured skirts, and sometimes the women join in too. Darnakes are just the kind of traditional Greek minstrels you might find performing there, with songs all sung in their native Greek language and all performed on traditional Greek instruments. Darnakes are certainly an orthodox folk band on this first album - although their religion doesn't even come into it - but their second and best album "Libra" opens the book on a far heavier progressive edge to the band. Look out for Darnakes' third and most recent album to date though, which has a sting in the tail. 2005: Darnakes - Virgo - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mGxIKYKZvUPNTY-da9dIp8XxQFdcY8-44 2010: Darnakes - Libra: The Matchmaking of Antigone - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lZ5h31bsST5C-D_qNrbuAd963lYdYEbEs 2013: Darnakes - Scorpio - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLufaSeBo2qIEGtEa5Zxp3W98GWL7jpa2h Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 18 2023 at 09:16 |

DEADFILE File under philosophical Post Rock. If you've ignored Greek prog up to now, then that may be the worst decision since Socrates decided to drink the hemlock. Deadfile are from the sun-kissed island of Corfu in northwestern Greece and where, during the hazy lazy days of summer, there's ample time to study your flip-flops on the beach, whilst contemplating the Oneness of Being and Nothingness - as you do. After all, they don't call this kind of thoughtful, reflective music "Shoegazing" for nothing. The haunting, cinematic music of the enigmatically-tilled "Applied Oneironautics" is as creepy and suspense-filled as a Hitchcock thriller where, at any moment, you half-expect a knife-wielding maniac dressed in women's clothes to leap out of the shadows - although it's probably just transvestite comedian Eddie Izzard playing a prank again. Okay, so the music's not as thrilling as Sharon Stone's unforgettable leg-crossing scene in Basic Instinct, but at least no one dies here. Adding to the evocative atmosphere and meditative mood are the delicate tinkling ivories of a classical piano, combined with floating ethereal voices that drift gently in and out of the consciousness like a distant dream. The calm, tranquil atmosphere of this deeply hypnotic album makes it ideal listening for late at night with the lights turned down low, so if you're not fast asleep and dead to the world by the end of this introspective album, then you're either an insomniac, or you drank too much coffee before heading up the stairs to Bedfordshire. All in all then, "Applied Oneironautics" is as studious and thoughtful as a night spent in a Greek temple under the stars, contemplating the meaning of life, love and happiness, or wondering what on earth Level 42 is in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Following this auspicious debut, Deadfile released two further equally intriguing albums:- "The City Over the Void" (2014) and "The Oddity of Human Structures" (2019), and it's their third album where Deadfile really comes to life! 2012: Deadfile - Applied Oneironautics - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5u y_mKL1UsQZusei1s2JhYDYG696R1TsqSQag 2014: Deadfile - The City Over the Void - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nc1Gu1RLuEPN-KrYR6mk9QsTsWuknRZCo 2019: Deadfile - The Oddity of Human Structures - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kQZyQYMAEcsD-x-q19MyCBXzRkCntd08Y Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 19 2023 at 12:41 |

YIORGOS FAKANAS Yes, we have no Fakanas. There are three albums by Giorgos Fakanas listed on ProgArchives:- "Horizon" (1988), "Amorosa" (1991) & "Echoes" (2004), only the last of which is currently available on YouTube. In addition, there are four later Giorgos Fakanas albums, all of which can be found on YouTube, but none of which are listed here on PA, so inevitably "Echoes" is the only one of seven Fakanas albums currently available for review. Confused? Me too! "Echoes" takes us on a jaunty, jazzy journey around the ancient historic regions of Greece, namely:- Thrace; Epirus; Macedonia; Crete; Thessaly, Peloponnese; Sterea Ellada; Aegean; and the Dodecanese - which are presumably islands with twelve sides. There are many sides to Giorgos Fakanas too, with jazzy horns, sassy sax, vibrant vibraphones and delicate piano motifs in abundance, in combination with sweeping classical strings. Fakanas is best-known as a bass player (if he's known at all outside of his native Greece) but the bass playing is very understated here, so you won't hear any heavy storm and thunder bass riffing in the style of Chris Squire, meaning it's probably not going to awaken the passions of the slumbering Greek Prog Gods on Mount Olympus. After all, this is a jazz album - not a prog album. In conclusion then, if a profusion of Jazz Fusion puts you in a land of confusion, then "Echoes" may leave you in a state of disillusion, but on the other hand, if a jazzy infusion is good for your constitution, then this album may be the ideal solution - or is that just circumlocution? 2004: Yiorgos Fakanas - Echoes - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lsqdiwh8BqZL75Hz_BydzQvP3lq6WHxaU 2007: Yiorgos Fakanas - Domino - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mu_PO3TrQNdNrDz3HFNXVYmSgOS3WWTxs 2010: Yiorgos Fakanas & Anthony Jackson - Interspirit - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kGUh5L4hDMYf67b5R-1Vs--XWAp-vkXp0 2016: Yiorgos Fakanas - Acrobat - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l_ibTgRnwHNWD2nyG5kEGZxZkHO3D2LWc 2022: Yiorgos Fakanas - Topaz - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n3YnCFWQOlTRHZrzuB0kWqgU-ITkHRChQ Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 21 2023 at 12:03 |

A-Z of Greek Prog
THE FLOW Go with The Flow! A chilled-out band from Greece's third city of Patras, in the far north of the Peloponnesian peninsula. The Flow first streamed into view back in 1999, with their one and only album of spacey, mellow moods having an Incubation period of four years. Their hypnotic music is as chilled out as a daiquiri cocktail on ice with a slice of a lemon on a sun-kissed Mediterranean beach with the waves gently lapping at your feet and with a dog gently lapping at your ice cream. The music is as delicately pleasing as a fragile Grecian urn with the heavily-accented vocalist only adding to the delightful Greek charm of this modern Krautrock classic. "Incubation" features swirling waves of laid-back rhythms gently ebbing and flowing like the tide, together with lashings of cool and breezy psychedelic grooves. And so, if you've ever wanted to sail the Aegean Sea without leaving the comfort of your armchair and you're in the mood for a sun-dazed, psychedelic haze of in-and-out phasing that sounds so amazing, then you'll surely have a pleasant voyage - and don't forget the sunscreen! 2003: The Flow - Incubation - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_m7mggYhBbKoFwucV4a_POaOR_gQOx9piY Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 22 2023 at 07:28 |
