Just discovering this band. They have two albums, their newest Murmurations was released January 27, 2023. Another stellar release from the Coniguliaro brothers, who also appear in the following musical projects... Wippy Bonstack, In-Dreamview, Sun Colored Chair, and Wyxz. This music is modern, playful, fresh, pushing boundaries, and may be my album of the year. What are your thoughts? |

No. I still see this album as evidence of the gang's continued development. Don't get me wrong: they've all developed into monsters at their instruments (most of them multiple instrumentalists) but the songs still exhibit notes of experimentalism even "études"--as if they are still challenging themselves to improve on their skills, craft, range of stylistic expression, and compositional maturity. Other than the amazing In-Dreamview and Wippy Bonstack 22 albums, I see them still as a bunch of individuals "in training" to find themselves (other than Matt Stober).
Coincidentally, my two-hour radio broadcast of Prog Is Alive this weekend (July 9) will be a show entitled, "Matt Stober & The Coniguliaro Brothers." You can stream it any time next week from the archives at www.wdrt.org, if you're interested. |

^Great response, Drew. I'll try and listen to your show. I enjoy this album more than anything by In-Dreamview, but Wippy's 22 still tops it. If you believe they are still "in training" I eagerly await what that will release when they mature, because it will be beyond amazing.

While I love Wippy Bonstack and it is indeed a good album, it may not even be the best "Owl" of the year.
Some albums I would put above Murmurations: The Worm by HMLTD, Witchy Activities and the Maple Death by Monika Roscher, Breathing Space by Hackberry, Shambhallic Vibrations by Lunar Chamber, Rise of Kassandra by Tritop. Obviously, it is just a matter of personal preference, and I would completely get why someone would think of it as the album of the year. Hell, even I could change my mind with time, as commonly happens.

It didn't really wow me on the first listen but it's definitely growing on me.

This band isn't on this website. Why don't you recommend them on the recommendations page.

I totally agree, Will: whatever comes next from these early 20-somethings (Matt is, I believe, 32) is going to only get better. If you follow the development of the Coniguliaro brothers since 2012 when they were releasing jams they did with their dad as the band "Substanance" to last year, they have progressed geometrically in terms of skills--on multiple instruments--stylistic comfort zones and compositional sophistication. I believe neither of the brothers is older than 25, yet, so WATCH OUT WORLD!! |

A great album, but there's so many awesome releases this year. Here's an alternative, not on the archives (yet):
