The British Invasion of Laurel Canyon - Eight British music legends who'll be forever associated with the Canyon of Dreams. Heart

ERIC CLAPTON    The blues guitar legend famously picnicked at Mama Cass Elliot's house in Laurel Canyon, where he was joined by David Crosby and Joni Mitchell, amongst others.  The picnic was forever immortalised in photographs by Henry Diltz. No doubt they made beautiful music there together too. It was only later that Eric became hooked on Cocaine. 

DONOVAN     Known mononymously as Donovan, the Scottish folk singer moved to L.A. in the mid-1960's where all of that California sunshine obviously provided the inspiration for Sunshine Superman, whereas Mellow Yellow was presumably a reference to the hallucinogenic effect of smoking dried banana skins, as you do.

GEORGE HARRISON    My Sweet Lord. The former Beatle once rented a house in Laurel Canyon where he reportedly took LSD with The Byrds and Peter Fonda, although hopefully, not while he was riding his Easy Rider motorcycle. Just another day in the life of George Harrison.

DAVY JONES    The pint-sized star was an actor from an early age and with a name like Davy Jones, he should have starred in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Davy Jones (1945-2012) spent many a Pleasant Valley Sunday in L.A.'s leafy canyon community where he got up to all sorts of Monkee-business on TV with his fellow bandmates Mickey Dolenz, Mike Nesmith & Peter Tork. 

JOHN LENNON     Peace, love and real estate. The former Beatle once had a cottage up in the Hollywood Hills which is on sale now for a cool $1,000,000. Imagine that!

DAVE MASON    A former member of Traffic, Dave Mason moved from the hustle and bustle of Birmingham to the leafy retreat of Laurel Canyon where there's much less traffic. He recorded an album Alone Together with Mama Cass Elliot in 1971 and he still lives in the USA to this day with homes in Carson City, Nevada and Hawaii. 

JOHN MAYALL    Blue suede blues. A British blues legend with his band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, with a career that spans over sixty years. John Mayall lived in Laurel Canyon for around ten years until his house was destroyed by a brush fire in 1979. He recorded an album there too, titled "Blues from Laurel Canyon", appropriately enough.

GRAHAM NASH    A former member of The Hollies, Graham Nash famously lived in "Our House" in Laurel Canyon with Joni Mitchell for about 18 months.  He'll be forever remembered as part of the Laurel Canyon supergroup, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY).

"CABIN ESSENCE" is quite different from any style of writing I heard in the late 60s. The song "SURF'S UP" is a masterpiece and it differs from the other tracks on the album.

"THE ELEMENTS FIRE ( Mrs. O' Leary's Cow) is rather insane for its time. Brian Wilson handed out LSD to the band and they wore fireman hats riding around in a fire truck tripping their minds out. This comes across sounding much like The Residents.

The problem is that SMILE wasn't released in 1967..although people did in fact buy bootleg copies of it. Brian Wilson re-recorded the album in the 90s ( I believe?)..but it didn't do anything for me. The original Beach Boys SMILE was interesting and worthy of a listen. Some people in the past have commented the following: "I don't understand what anyone would see in this" You obviously have to like The Beach Boys...but as soon as you've said that you begin to encounter Beach Boys fans who loathe it because they find it all weirded out and disturbing in sections and long for songs about surfing and hot rods.

Brian Wilson was in a strange mindset when he wrote it and some fans cringe when they hear it. I think it's odd for the times. You can obviously tell that it's them singing but they sometimes use phase shifters and echo on their voices which creates a different affect on the album. They employ some J.S. Bach and quirky 2 minute instrumentals that are reminiscent of The Residents Tales Of Two Cities. I've played this album for people under the influence and they become thrown off and can't conclude why they recorded this kind of album. I wonder how it would have affected people in 1967 if it had been released. Danny Hutton claimed that Brian Wilson had short pieces or bits and pieces he recorded. ..but Wilson edited those bits to form a concept album. The bits fall between the songs clocking in between 3 to 5 minutes. It's more like a Rock symphony. I like it because it's unusual.
Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks also collaborated on the Wonderful album Orange Crate Art, which makes me Smile every time I hear it. Smile

HERB ALPERT     A horn player who doesn't need to blow his own trumpet. Herb Alpert is the "A" in A & M Records (alongside Jerry Moss) which was later sold to PolyGram for a cool $500 million! Herb Alpert led his band The Tijuana Brass from the early 1960's until the Rise of his solo career in the mid-1970's. Herb has the honor of being one of only two artists - alongside Barry White - to top the US Billboard Hot 100 as both an instrumentalist on "Rise" and a vocalist on Bacharach & David's romantic classic: "This Guy's in Love with You". Heart

The gorgeous three-part harmonies of Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell & Dan Peek - collectively known as America - encapsulated the American dream with timeless classics such as "Ventura Highway", "Muskrat Love", "Tin Man", "Sister Golden Hair", "Lonely People", and many more. KAREN ALEXANDER    One of the Ladies of the Canyon, singer/songwriter Karen Alexander was an early signing on David Geffen's Asylum label. Her two long-forgotten albums of gentle folk-rock refrains are very reminiscent of Joni Mitchell. They've become real collectors items too as they're really hard to find these days. Isn't it always so.

AFTERGLOW     Come on baby light my fire! Afterglow were a Psychedelic Rock band from Northern California with a sound that conjures up the warm smell of colitas rising up through the air. Their acid-tinged music is very reminiscent of The Doors, Jefferson Airplane and the Byrds. The band only stuck around long enough to record one incandescent album, but you can still bathe in their Aftergow over half a century later. Smile

THE AGGREGATION     1968: A Mind Odyssey first entered our consciousness the same year as 2001: A Space Odyssey, but whereas Stanley Kubrick's epic sci-fi fantasy explored the endless depths of outer space, Los Angeles band The Aggregation explored the inner workings of the mind. So turn on the lava lamp, light up a joss stick and get ready to explore those cerebral final frontiers as we go on a mind-boggling psych trip to the centre of the mind. It's worth knowing that The Aggregation were one of the few rock bands to perform regularly at Disneyland, where fantasy becomes reality, or is it the other way around. By the way, all of the songs on the album are a cryptic reference to the aforementioned amusement park, so prepare for a wild ride! Smile

ARS NOVA     Not to be confused with the Japanese band of the same name, Ars Nova (literally "New Art") originated in New York City and later moved to the land of Sunshine and Shadows in L.A, where they signed up with Jac Holzman's Elektra Label. Paul Rothchild - legendary producer of The Doors - was hired to produce their first album. Ars Nova also supported The Doors at the Fillmore East in 1968.
