Wow, there's something going on here! And there are some quite interesting topic suggestions, two of which I have considered myself, at least as a basic idea: Contemporary chamber music (incl. cross-genre collaborations?) and folklore as a source of inspiration.

@George, have you already opened a new thread and if so in which forum section? I'm not quite sure I have understood your concept in detail, perhaps it would make sense to give the new format a name incl. a brief description so that the forumists understand that there is something new going on here?

Anyway, I'm excited for all of the good things to come! Clap

I'll put up a poll shortly... (it'll be easier than you think, Christian Smile).

I’d be willing to do one focused on contemporary favourites that we got into during, say, the past six months.

^ Anything contemporary goes down my alley, Greg! I have always been careful with such topics, though because I have the impression that the people here are less interested because they belong to another generation.

I was just wondering if it would make sense to adapt the old IA-Poll format or rather to replace it with George's IA-Playlist format? Basically, there is not much of a difference imo. The rules are just a bit simpler, less restrictive but on the other hand the topics are less demanding/specific, too.

^ I was wondering that too; some kind of variation on both. More like George's I think. I was thinking that people can post up to two videos per post, people can vote for up to five choices (but not your own), they don't need to listen through the playlist to vote or vote to participate but it is encouraged.

We have people here of a few generations, but a lot of the 50 plus ones. I was about 30 when I started using this site, and feel like I lost my youth to progarchives. I feel like David Bowie's rapidly aging character in The Hunger, "I'm a young man. Do you understand? I'm a young man!"

I'll do it under an "Interactive Play" title.

Honestly, I'd think it would be a pity to mix up the two formats. The interactive playlists that George proposes can very well co-exist with interactive polls. They're a different approach, with a different timeline (once there are 25 suggestions, the poll's up). I know that both of you have preferred lately to fill the polls up to the brim (the 25 slots), but I don't really see the necessity of that, nor the interest. In my opinion, these interactive polls are more about exchange and quality than about voting and quantity. Neither are a popularity contest, but especially not the IA-polls, in my view. I don't mind if there are just 7 or 5 or 12 participants, as long as the music exchanged is interesting and the discussions are. The quality of exchange is rather absent in the IA-playlists, whereas it is - or at least used to be - more present in the IA-polls.It would be a pity to loose that.

Contemporary is fine with me. Would that be music of any genre? Both prog and non-prog? I think, by being a prog site, interest varies most if prog is or isn't included. Also, from the thread on how people listen to music, it seems like a majority a full albums only. It depends for me and has assumed it would be similat for most.

I like contemporary so I can get other people's suggestions as it is hard to keep up.

^ Kees, I'm not necessarily interested in replacing the old format, but we can also learn something from the new one, can't we? E.g. simpler rules would definitely be a step forward.

^ Oh yes, we can always learn, but you were talking about adapting or replacing the format, which would not be my choice. Simplifying could be a thing, although I don't think they are that complex and even less obvious themes have brought forward wonderful music that I didn't know before.
For me they are two distinct and different approaches of music exchange on these forums and both bring something else than most of the stereotypical prog threads and polls here on PA, so it also adds a dynamics to these forums that are a bit inundated by the PP-polls and lists and rankings (which also have their complete right and place to exist here, btw).
I know you came here for the IA-polls, but most of us came here because of prog. And when prog lovers propose non-prog music to other forum members there is a chance that some of them might be very interested by it (and that, I think, is the great quality of these IA-polls!).

I've already written up my poll description (too wordy as usual), and I like to mix things up. I think the discussion has been largely gone from the IA polls for quite a long time. In fact, discussion on music has become less common at PA over the years. And it will be both Prog and non-Prog. If it works out, fine, if it doesn't, then it can be a learning experience.

^^ I basically agree with you, Kees. I know I'm the black sheep of the family here, But I think that inputs from outside the prog universe can bring a breath of fresh air, too. Also I would appreciate to have more women in our IA-polls. George's IA-playlist polls attracted more women than we usually have. That also brought more musical diversity imo. which I appreciate very much.

^ Ha, I wished there would be more black sheep like you then, here on PA! Prog, generally is rather boring, except when it is going a bit out of the prog boxes... And that is what happened in many of the IA-polls. I understand - and share - your concerns though, and maybe that's why I'd rather see a co-existence of these two IA approaches: very much for imperialist reasons! Wink

If my poll sucks, it sucks. It's up anyway. Of course if someone wants to do another poll, I have no issue with having more than one up at the same time. Mine is more aligned with George's approach than Lorenzo's anyway and so need not be thought of as part of the Interactive Poll proper series. As for the Prog and non-Prog music divide, so much of what I like especially in modern music overlaps so I don't tend to think in "Prog" terms that much. Most of what I like even in PA is not what a purist likely would think of as Prog (and I don't tend to think of it as Prog). Prog, to be frank, is a word that leaves quite a bad taste in my mouth anyway -- I keep a lot of soap by my laptop when using this site. ;)

^ It doesn't suck at all, at least not to me - I like it! But this is indeed more in the interactive playlist-logic. As such, this is OK of course, but what we see with the two first IA-playlist installments is that there is hardly any exchange about the music: most participants plug their choice (at best with some contextual information), but there is hardly any commenting on them, apart from some - but very few - of the usual suspects. And I guess that listening and commenting on 25 suggestions is maybe a bit too much asked for (especially if everybody's going to put up 10-minute pieces...) to many of the participants.
This is maybe another important difference between IA-playlists and IA-polls: the quantity. More is less, maybe... and sometimes less is more!

Anyway, I like this poll, and I'll come up with some suggestions.
