Hi,

Of this first batch (A thru E) AFFORMANCE is far out and excellent. APHRODITE'S CHILD I was already aware in the late 60's as my sisters had brought out albums from France and Italy, where they were fairly well known. AWAKE & GALLO is very good ... and a nice listen.

I was gonna say that both Afformance and Awake & Gallo belong to the club ... "look ma, I'm not playing progressive (and repetitive) $hit!"

Will continue to listen to the rest of the list. That one song about Osanna is funny to my ears! Osanna, sadly enough is not appreciated much as far as I can tell. We were aware of them in the early 70's for what I believe was a bunch of shows they did with costumes ... which ANGE was also doing in Paris and France, btw. Story goes that GENESIS was the opening act for Osanna somewhere in Italy, and one of the guys in that band copied them and then "invented" the costumes for the rock stage ... !!!!!

I'll make a point of listening to everything listed here ... there are some far out things listed. Well done Paul.

Hi,

(from the second batch of the listing!)

Daemonia Nymphe - REMIX. Enjoyable, even though I think some folks might find this weird, but it seems to be ritual centered and also based on a lot of literaly stories about many things. The "Remix" album is almost a must have for folks that like things that are DISTINCTLY different.

Daemonia Nymphe - KRATAIA ASTEROPE. Like the REMIX album, this is some different stuff not defined by the conventional tastes that we often have. This is very different stuff and makes DCD sound like a poor new age band!

Daemonia Nymphe - MACBETH. Extremely theatrical stuff that really goes with their earlier material. In many ways this is to my ear a nice tribute to the old days in Greece and their music, that often went along with the plays, and were likely to sound more like this than otherwise, since the "sounds" had to be carried without amplification. I suppose that this is a production of MACBETH that we would all want to see. Much "truer" to its source and time, than otherwise. Really well done stuff and this would have added a massive touch to the play!

One of the very best things I have heard in some time ... this is tremendous and what an asset this would be to the play, and its presentation. Can't say enough about this.

Darnakes - LIBRA. Interesting stuff, but more towards the pop side of things than progressive, but fun to listen to, since you don't know if they are serious, or just having fun. To my ears it seems like they are in a bar having fun with some material, and granted ... it is well presented and nice, but I would imagine that this is more on the vein of the popular material that folks would be used to in a traditional faction.

Darnakes - SCORPIO. Compared to the previous album, I think this is a bit more serious and intentionally sounding a little more towards the rock sound of things, instead of the previous material that seemed to have a lot of traditional music style infused into it. I'm not even sure how I feel about this one, since it is so different from one album to the other to my ears.

Deadfile - MISS SIBYLLINE, Pt1. Based on this piece, I would think this is probably ... "space classical music" ... if there is such a determination. It's not weird, and it is meditative, and very active, and the very different instrumentation and design is very nice, and carries it well. And then, the film bit in the middle ... I don't get it ... assuming there is something to "get". And it goes back to the spacy stuff ... as if you needed a mental break! I have to admit that things that are way out there are always interesting, although I don't seem to find old Hollywood that interesting.

Deadfile - MISS SIBYLLINE, Pt2. Another classical piece, and a beautiful one at that, just like the first one, although this one seems to be more straight forward. Towards the middle it has some nice changes that are interesting, that don't seem to take away from the piece. Very very enjoyable.

Echo Tattoo - MIND YOUR STEP. (On this day's listens, this is the first conventional song band from the material I listed above.) Nice to listen to, but maybe not "special" in its creativity. Nice singing voice at the lead.

That's a few hours ... of nice stuff!!!

Hi,

(Up to almost halfway on Page 2)

{{NOTE: Usually means I might not have listened to the whole album, but did hear the piece in question and (usually) at least one more or so depending on how it grabbed my ears.}}

Yiorgos Fakanas - Acrobat ... towards the jazz fusion stuff with a very definite Southern California touch for music in my ears. ("partial review")

Yiorgos Fakanas - Echoes ... Nice stuff, that I think fits more into the "nice stuff" or "soft jazz" that is centered on melody, rather than jazz itself, even though it goes through several changes. Not great, but at least showing someone's musicianship.("partial review")

The Flow - Incubation ... What a wonderful start. In a very light jazzy sort of way, it takes us along really well. Very pretty start with "Topic". I will admit that I'm not sure how the words/lyrics (occasional in some obviously pre-defined moments). "Touch of Frost (pts 1 and 2)". A few more words are used here, but this is also a rather nice piece, and the band breaks into the normal "format" of popular music, which in the first piece they had not shown. The first piece was strictly about the piece of music meditative feel. This 2nd piece is not that until what must be its 2nd part. Very nice. "Spacestation 61" is another nice soundscape. The album is mostly very nice and soft material. A very nice listen.

Forbidden Myth - Zantea Chronicles ... The most conventional of all these bands listed (so far) but that's not to take it away from this work. It has some wonderful keyboard work, and lyrical content which tells its story. Nice stuff, not great, although I'm not sure I would consider this "progressive" simply because the album is a concept.

Yiannis Glezos - The Roses of Pieria ... All of the music in this album is inspired by "Ancient Greek Lyric Poetry".  "Lament" with a nice heavy guitar that seems to want to take over, but never does, this flows rather nicely. "The Roses of Pieria" is better described as theme music, or at least, what I might suggest as soundtrack music, though I think you might have to follow the poetry to get the imagery. It is nicely done, and reminds me of other works out there of the instrumental nature. "Spring Angel" is another nice piece. Faster paced but well put together so the solos develop the music further instead of simply repeating the material. Strong piece and a nice one to play on radio broadcasts, though it might not quite be the best representation of the album. "A Friend Far Away in a Foreign Land" is another nice piece, possibly a bit melancolic and romantic, but still a very nice touch. All in all a very nice album to have, although this is "nice music" and not exactly progressive per se, although the instrumentation of the material is excellent through out the album.

Socrates - Phos ... one of the things that was played on Space Pirate Radio way back in 1976. The album had Vangelis in it and the stuff in it was very nice.

Hieronymus Dream - Nostos ... The album seems to be based on Homer's Odyssey, or at least it is a "journey" that the band undertook to get this done. "Odysseus Raft" is a gentle start to this piece and very enjoyable, and you keep thinking that a rock riff will come out of it, but this is not a "rock" album, as much as it is a "journey" album, and there are no ego defining solos to show how good it is ... it sticks with its continuity and theme, and avoids the familiar and repetitive styles of pop music. It's almost "symphonic" in its continuity and probably deserves that definition for its way of telling a story via instrumental music, something that rock audiences can not appreciate as much, as so much classical music has for hundreds of years. "The Island of Lotus Eaters" develops slowly around the guitar and it is very neatly crafted and played. There is no hurry, and it takes us with its touches. "Circe's Secret" is slightly similar to the previous piece. I think folks might find this similar to the previous piece. All in all a nice album which makes for a nice comfortable listen. Makes you wonder what we are missing in the Greek Lyric of antiquity ... though I have always found the English translations to be horrible and invoke wrong images that did not exist or were a part of that time in Greece.

Intravenous - Oiseau ... What a wonderful start this has. So simple. As it gets more serious into a solo section, it is interesting, but it returns to the simple stuff. As it reaches past half way it starts its journey into the experimental and likely a lot of improvisation. It actually works and sounds fine and is very listenable because it is not doing the expected, and it flows rather nicely. Very enjoyable piece.

Iraklis - Pezis Me Tis Mihanes ... (The toob stuff is not translated and it is hard to know what things are, btw) ... Prog pop to my ears. Didn't catch me much.

Jargon - The Fading Thought ... "Time is Running Out"/ "In Search of the Invisible Line"/"The Film"/"The Fading Thought". Although this is piano driven, it feels like this is symphonic and really well done progressive music, although no one here does the show mamma your talents or riffs! Soft for the most part, and tight. Well done stuff.

Hi,

All The Kings & Queens are Dead finally - The Yesterdays ... Always the Jester/Tricky Moon/Dreams of Flesh and Bones Pts 1 and 2 and 3/Gather Darkness, Gather. A very enjoyable and soft trip, that feels more like folk rock than it does anything of the progressive kind, and it is pretty with a wonderful woman's voice to take you along.

Mike Kyre - The Lands of Nowhere ... Supernova/Serenity Flows/The Sands of Time/Broken Hourglass. Some nice stuff, but in my ears there is too much ripping around on the guitar, and as PP said Greece's answer to Joe Satriani, and a few other thrashers out there. with a nice touch here and there, but otherwise, I would think the guitar riffing is nice but not exactly satisfying in the end as a piece of music that takes you on a trip ... unless you like scales by the hundreds in a few seconds!

Lunar Miasma - Arrival ... Arrival/Second Moon. I don't know if this is fair to say, but this reminds me of the very early days of TD when they took their time to develop their pieces of music, and this made a couple of albums really far out and spacy. It doesn't sound like them at all, but it is a nice piece that slowly flows along. Very electronic. However, this is not from the melodic/soundtrack like material that TD has at all ... this might be a bit more experimental material on the synthesizers than anything else.

Lunar Miasma - Managing The Dream ... Fields/Managing the Dream/Hypnopompic Speech/The Unconscious. The same style start, of a hypnotic sound that flows along with small changes. Soft listen for the ears, and only the last piece does not quite fit with the other 3, however, the only difference is the "noise" over the music itself. Still nice.  Not great in my book, but nice to listen to. Again, nice, but not great.

Luup - Meadow Rituals ... Horse Heart/Taurokathapsia/Cream sky/Spiraling/Roots Growth/See You in Me
Luup - Canticles of the Holy Scythe ... Why Are The Mountains Black/Feat. Sofia Sarri/Ha Idra Rabba Qadisha. This is Chamber Music with electric instruments, and voice. it is, for my ears, very academic, and not at all minding the tastes of a popular group. As such, it creates material that is very different, and sometimes a bit weird, or harsh, and not always perfect for the ears, in a satisfying manner that we would like. I'm not sure I am discussing this properly ... their material is too far out there in some other land, and difficult to say something of value. I suppose that "chamber music" is the best description and very modern at that ... but also a bit weird and intentionally off key in the desire to be different. Music for those that collect a lot of classical music, where this might be more appreciated than within a rock audience.

Methexis - The Fall of Bliss ... Eradicated Will/Poetic Mirrors Wound Heroes/Those Howling Wolves. for my tastes this is a bit too conventional for my tastes. The longer cuts are nice, in a lot of ways, if you can let go of the "look ma, I'm gonna do a prog guitar solo" thing, and then a minute later "look ma, I'm stopping the guitar and gonna sing!". All in all it is rather nice, although it is way too much like a lot of things out there ... nice, but you end up not remembering them, even though it has some nice parts and pieces.

Missigno - Binary Digit Temple ... Binary Digit Temple/Access Injection/Merfolk Sensei/Digital Parasites/Checkpoint 1. What to call this might be the question. It is nice stuff, maybe a bit on the jazz side of things with a little bit of that old analog weirdness to make it fun, instead of "serious music", which I think might make it more interesting, however, I'm not sure of how good this is ... strange in parts, but generally listenable, although not conventional in the strictest sense of the word. The synth effects keep it fun all the way.

Mother Turtle - Zea Mice ... Kukururu/#Corn Hub/Sea Mice/Zeitenlik/Vermins. Instrumental stuff that is reminiscent of Jean-Luc Ponty, but that might just be my ear hearing the violin, although I think that JLP is a bit more animated, than just playing melody. The main concern I have here is the music going left and right and the drumming staying the same. Very poor drum design for what would otherwise be a really nice bunch of folks with some far out material. It just boggles me that the music goes left, and then right, then up and then down ... and the drumming stays the same. Doesn't cut it. Nice material, but I would like to see it be better defined and designed, specially when it comes to the drums! You get the feeling that sometimes it is trying hard to sound like some version of King Crimson on a bad night, but I'm not sure that BB will ever be found to be that poor, or out of it. At least by his words!

Naxatras - Naxatras II ... Oort Cloud/Proxima Centauri/Sisters of the Sun/The Great Attractor. I know I am not a great fan of the time keeper beginner drummers, but here is another example, right from the first piece (2nd actually) which is a sort of development of a theme as it gets stronger, and harder, and the drums? Put me to sleep, sadly enough! And by the time you get to the 3rd piece and 4th piece, nice or not, your ears simply won't be there. I would love to see this stuff better designed and defined so it can be considered "progressive" ... as it is, like MOTHER TURTLE, it comes off as very elementary and not a good listen to many of us "progressive" listeners. It gets to the point where you can't even say this is  neo-neo-neo something or other!

No Brain Cell - Monuments ... Man of Silence/Take Me Far Away/Fable of the Dreamers/Child/Intermission. From a very nice start, to ... metal? It has a feel that reminds me of PT, but that may be unfair on my part. Interesting mix right from the first cut. Even the notes on the toob suggest that, which I don't specifically care for, but in many ways, it shows a side of PT that we did not hear at all, and it was one without SW and his lyrics. A lot smoother, though not as raw, as PT used to sound, before they became a studio slick band that had a lot less to offer. Towards the later spots in the album, I was thinking that if this was a new PT album, that we would have liked it a lot more.

Next ... No Clear Mind

^ Hi Mosh.  I'm glad you're enjoying the carnival of Greek music as much as I am. Who  knew there was so much Greek prog out there just waiting to be discovered!? Not me, that's for sure, when the only Greek band I knew before joining Prog Archives was Aphrodite's Child. ...

Hi,

I'm planning to hear all of them, and post a comment or two. It's not meant to be a review at all, since I only did a large portion of the albums, and not always the whole album, but hopefully it adds to the knowledge and appreciation of many bands the world over, not just Greece.

From my own knowledge and according to my sisters who travelled a lot in Europe (Manuela is still in Paris), Italy and Greece were probably the most active, and later many other countries did as well. Italy, had a lot of pop music going, and apparently still does, which made it hard for the rock bands to get greater acceptation, but in the end, they are well remembered for their work. But, honestly, that's as much as I can tell you about those countries. We need to do France ... which has a very large contingent as well, though it's differences and variations are enough to drive us mad!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Yanni retired? Oh no! How will I be able to sleep at night? Ok, who sees what I did there? ;)

So let me get this right. There aren't any Greek prog bands currently active?

No, it's just me that's no longer active on this blog. I already added Dennis Roussos but decided to draw the line at adding Mama Mouskouri too. Tongue
