Have you watch the Greek prog rock/metal scene?
From Aphrodite's child to the present days? Poem, Need, Fragile Vastness, Wastefall, Vass/Katsionis, Playgrounded, Mother of Millions, Parthian Shot and many others...

I'm familiar with Aphrodite's Child (666 is a masterpiece), Vangelis (who I think has made Prog), Akritas, and Xenakis (not Prog, but still I think worth mentioning) and some others in PA I have heard. I don't know any of the names in your list other than Aphrodite's Child. So not really familiar with the modern modern stuff from Greece. I'm not very into metal other than I like a fair amount of music music labelled post-metal and some other metallic things.

I did not write about Akritas because the Greek lyrics. Very nice album!
I wrote about the bands that use English lyrics. There are a few other bands of 70's and 80's with Greek lyrics and very nice albums! Edited by UnderGround - June 27 2023 at 01:08 |

Hi,
We go back a ways ... sister brought from France, way back when Aphrodite's Child, and a couple of years later, she also had Demis Roussos. At the same time she had Alan Stivell, so it gives you an idea what she was into in the late 60's when she was in Europe ... actually two sisters, one of which is still in Paris and is an artist. I, never listened to music because it was this or that ... thus picking up various things was always nice, and it even goes way back to a lot of the music that showed up in many films during that time from Greece, and the film "Zorba, the Greek" specially which had a massive soundtrack album. By comparison, a lot of the rock related music passed me by except Socrates that we picked up because of Vangelis. Into the 80's and 90's I was not able to purchase much and keep up with much and that is a period where I missed many things. Being born in Europe, lived in Brazil and then in America, I tend to say that I am not exactly minded by any nation or culture, and I listen to so many of them that thinking of one as Greek, and the other Hindu, and the next Argentinian is kind of an alien concept. I love the music and how it winds its way into your heart ... which is more important for me. There were a lot of great folks in the list you mention, and I think I have heard over half of them at various times, but I could not exactly mention a title of any of them since many of them were heard in passing, and not in its entirety ... my thoughts have always been ... MUSIC NEVER DIES ... only our attention to it seems to not pay attention to the many splendored places around this world that create lovely music of all kinds.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I'm really only familiar with Septicflesh, if they count, and frankly I'm not really a big fan of them Greece has great underground death and doom metal scenes, though :)

My #1 favorite underground Greek album would be Iraklis' debut. The native lyrics IMO create a very unique atmosphere, which would've been unachievable had the band chosen to use English lyrics.

On the day of my creation, I fell in love with education. And overcoming all frustration, a teacher I became.

I believe that Septicflesh is not a prog band and i do not like either. I never listen to genres like death and black...

It is more natural to write in the native language but if someone wants to have a wider audience he must write English lyrics. I had made a concept rock album with Greek lyrics back in 2011...

The only album that Socrates joined forces with Vangelis was "Phos". Great album! And Socrates was a great band with one of the best guitarists, Giannis Spathas. Did you know that Socrates had almost finished their new records back in 2009. But then Antonis Turkogiorkis(Bass, Vocals) had a serious health problem and never recorded vocals. Some years ago Gannis Spathas passed away and we will never listen to this record...

Need and Poem are the best progressive metal bands I know, I've also listened to Mother of Millions and Fragile Vastness, both recommended for prog-metal listeners. I'll mention the vocalist/musician

Thats a terrible shame, absolutely love that Phos album as well and reminds me a little of an earlier Vangelis album Earth. Massive energy! Talking of Aphrodites Child, 666 is of course a masterpeice , held back 2 years by the record company because the world was not ready for it!
