Bill Evans - Sunday at the Village Vanguard
Although, I prefer:

Dmitri Shostakovich- 13th Symphony in B minor, for bass, bass chorus, and orchestra (1962)

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

But the 1962 recording of it wasn't released until 1993. The first time it was released in any shape or form was a 1965-recording - in 1967.

My vote also goes to Sunday at the Village Vanguard
-
Five additional favorites for each year (only one album per artist allowed, otherwise it would have featured more Coltrane and Dolphy):

Ahmed Abdul-Malik - East Meets West (1960)
Elisabeth Waldo and Her Concert Orchestra - Rites of the Pagan: Mystic Realm of the Ancient Americas (1960)
Marty Robbins - More Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs (1960)
Yusef Lateef - The Centaur and the Phoenix (1960)
Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery (1960)

John Coltrane - Olé Coltrane (1961)
Eric Dolphy - Out There (1961)
Bill Evans Trio - Explorations (1961)
The Gil Evans Orchestra - Out of the Cool (1961)
Max Roach - We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite (1961)

Ornette Coleman - Ornette on Tenor (1962)
Herbie Mann - Herbie Mann at The Village Gate (1962)
The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Countdown: Time in Outer Space (1962)
Sun Ra - The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra (1962)
Barbara Dane - When I Was a Young Girl (1962)

The one that got two stars from Paul. Big smile To be honest, I'm not much into non-classical music before the Beatles, with a few jazz exceptions, but Miriam Makeba is fine.

Muddy Waters. Where the Rolling Stones got their name. Zeppelin, Clapton, Beck, Butterfield, Van Morrison, Mayall, Peter Green, they all owe a debt to the Magnificent Muddy, and one of the great live albums of all time.
...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...
