Hi, And Christopher Lee's turn was very nice! I was also thinking that Klaus Kinski would have made a good evil character ... with one problem ... he likely would hurt or maim several folks during the production with his improvisations going nuts all the time. The special his friend did, shows it a couple of samples.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Here are some more that need to be mentioned: Max Schreck as Nosferatu in the movie of the same name by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. Klaus Kinski as Aguirre in "Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes" ("Aguirre, Wrath of God") by Werner Herzog. The dwarfs in "Auch Zwerge haben klein angefangen" ("Even Dwarfs Started Out Small") by Werner Herzog. A character you might not consider to be scary, but I do: Bernadette Lafont as Camille Bliss in François Truffaut's "Une belle fille comme moi" ("A Gorgeous Girl Like Me"). Robert Mitchum as Harry Powell in "The Night of the Hunter" by Charles Laughton (I am surprised no-one mentioned him so far). Edited by BaldFriede - May 16 2023 at 06:16 |

^ I thought of Robert Mitchum for several roles (Cape Fear): good choice!
Not so sure about the dwarfs . . . Bernadette Lafont as Camille Bliss in François Truffaut's "Une belle fille comme moi" reminds me a lot of Béatrice Dalle in Betty Blue (a scary role in its own right!)

Right! This is a classic! (I have to admit that I'm not very tuned in to the films before the 1960s). |

Trust me, once you have seen the whole movie you will consider the dwarfs to be extremely scary. Unfortunately I can't find links to the whole movie, but here a link to a review that will make you understand why they are scary. |

Here a few excerpts from that movie that may give you an insight: I mean, burning flowers and crucifying monkeys is pretty scary.

Christopher Lee in the Curse Of Frankenstein. This was very early days for Hammer Horror and way before they got the 'Hammy' tag. Lee's turn as the monster was memorable although the make up dept should get all the plaudits. One film critic said he looked like a road accident!
Outside the horror genre, Ralph Fiennes portrayal of a Nazi officer in Schindler's List is truly chilling to the bone stuff. 'Vacant' is the best way to describe the character and chilling because you know he's capable of anything.

The Kemp brothers (yes, those guys from Spandau Ballet!) in The Krays. I often find “true story” films to be more scary, and knowing that the Kray twins committed the crimes that you see in the films adds weight. Nasty….
Have to agree about Anthony Hopkins in SOTL. What an actor, probably my favourite of all time 😎 |

^ And it was mostly real too, these days they probably wouldn't build a working model like that.

Okay, Peoplesons, we've gotten a bit off track here: I really tried to make the point that I'd like to see the nominees come about due to their ACTING, not the makeup or prosthetics or costumes or physical types (Jaws and dwarfs) but the actors' (and writers') craft creating the fear effect. I mean, let's be honest: Morgan Freeman pulling off the act of creating a character that is spine-chillingly, nightmare inducing haunting (as he does in Mean Streets) or the way Ralph Fiennes does Amon Gut or Joe Pesci does his mercurial character in Good Fellas or Ray Liotta playing Melanie Griffin's deranged husband in Something Wild--these were roles that were created by writing, acting, direction, cinematography, and editing, not the makeup or costume departments.

John Huston as Noah Cross in Chinatown. He has the right charisma and authority for the role.
Good thread, I'll get back to this later as I really should be on my way to work already.

Wonderful film (I do like the black comedy). Christian Bale himself can be pretty scary. and kin of amuusing. Language warning for his classic set rant.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0auwpvAU2YA My choice was Captain Vidal, as played by Sergi López, in Pan's Labyrinth for his sadism. He give me chills. For a less acclaimed villain, John Travolta in Battlefield Earth based on L. Ron Hubbard's (the glorious founder of Scientology) novel. To LRH!
