Cardiacs fan here, want to get into more prog.

   I spent most of my life listening to wacky, eclectic pop and rock music (They Might Be Giants, Ween, XTC, Mr. Bungle's California, Kate Bush's The Dreaming, etc.), but then a friend of mine showed me Sing to God by Cardiacs a couple years ago, and that changed my entire path. I want to get more into prog, but I don't really know where to start. I love eclectic, maximalist, manic, dense music with a playful quirk to it. Where should I start entering this beautiful genre?

	There are various related acts such as The Sea Nymhps, Mr and Mrs Smith and Mr Drake, William D. Drake. Knifeworld. Then things like Gong and Magma and The Residents, Gentle Giant, Miriodor, Jagga Jazzist, Henry Cow, Zappa... I suggest trying 5uu's Crisis in Clay. And Koenji Hyakkei's albums is one that I suggested to someone some months looking for maximalist music. Here's Dhorimviskha (Angherr shisspa) is what hooked me at first) Various Thinking Plague too. 	Welcome! Cardiacs fans are always welcome (but also of course non-Cardiacs fans)! Maybe you want to explore some of the classics of prog (not sure how much you know of course). From where you're coming you may well appreciate quite a bit of King Crimson's material, say Red, The Course of the Crimson King, Lizard, and also their more New Wave influenced music of the eighties, starting with Discipline (my number two favourite album of all time). You may well enjoy pre-1975 material of Yes and Genesis (check out Genesis' 1973 live album "Genesis Live"). Not quite so sure about Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd - maybe early Pink Floyd out of these in the first place. Gentle Giant are an obvious Cardiacs influence, you may also enjoy some of Van der Graaf Generator's material (maybe Pawn Hearts for a start). Some people here including myself have discussed Swans music heavily; Soundtracks for the Blind may be a good entry point for you; personally I rate the 2010s albums highest. Also you may want to sample the anarchistic appeal of early 70s Kraut rock, with Can's Tago Mago and Amon Duul II's Yeti/Tanz der Lemminge as highlights. Of course there are also more recent bands such as Sleepytime Gorilla Museum or Poil Ueda to float your boat; I agree with many things already recommended. Even though I'm not the most nostalgic of characters, I do think that it makes some sense to explore some classics early on, as their influence is everywhere and connections can be built better knowing them.
