I think, it's fine to distinguish between the historical meaning of "Heavy Metal" and a retrospective definition with the main concern how to distinguish between Heavy Metal and Hard Rock.

Debut album by Captain Beyond, one of the heaviest albums of that era!

An interesting question can be which of these "other" Hard/Heavy pre-'80s albums are most Progressive. That would imo include: Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond Scorpions - Lonesome Crow Edited by David_D - May 27 2023 at 05:27 |

Early Queen is blisteringly heavy at least the first 4 albums includinhg A Night At the Opera, and are big influence on the heavy genre

True, and not just early Queen, there were heavy songs on every album in the 70s. Jazz had Dead on Time and Let Me Entertain You. Blew my mind when I was kid listening to them.

I'd say A Night At the Opera is rather arty Hard Rock, or very hard Art Rock. ![]() |
