Split Enz sound like an Aussie version of the Cardiacs, only much better. I've tried listening to all of the Cardiacs albums, but my heart wasn't really in it.

Groan. I have to admit, they're not an easy listen.

I've never heard anyone compare Split Enz to Cardiacs before, and that comparison has never occurred to me. To me, "Mental Notes" is a fully prog album that in places is reminiscent of Genesis. BTW, I can hear the New Zealanders scoffing from over here at you saying "Aussie version" about Split Enz. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

On second thoughts, Split Enz are too good to compare them with the Cardiacs and I had no idea Split Enz are from New Zealand, but I'll make a mental note to remember that.

Yeah, it's been skewed over decades towards make-up and costume-wearing bands (which PG was doing anyways) Wakeman and his stardust-sprinkled cape was also quite glittery. Art Rock was a full-blown prog genre here before being blown to bits in Heavy/Crossover/Eclectic.
I'm glad somebody caught that one . .

but they do count, when i see an artist/band classified as heavy prog or crossover or eclectic, I understand what kind of music I'm dealing with.

Yes they exist like Light, Fun and Sprawling Prog... three subgenres I plan to suggest soon.

they're pure figments of PA's twisted collective imagination one of the reasons why I was opposed to the division was because "ecclectic" and "Xover" were pure fantasy... Heav prog was OK with me, and TBH, the only thing I don't like to X-over is its name. Unfortunately constant revisionism strikes on PA as well.

Sparks - Propaganda I'm on guard again but unprepared to fend for myself in a battle You won't tell me why the shrubbery moves Or why there always has to be subterfusion You won't even say "at ease" After waging a costly siege When a potentate ain't so potent in his state he summons help fast Unilaterally I withdraw What was peace is now a grand coup d'etat The Purple Heart for valour please And no heart for you Denise Reinforcements, reinforcements I could use a strong rear guard Reinforcements, reinforcements First the left flank, then the right I'd sooner work the PX tonight Spoken: You intercept my S.O.S in order that no News of my distress will ever reach the Homefront and about my camouflage Well, it didn't work on you ... in fact most Things they tell recruits never seem to do Raise my rank if I should last another night so tortuous Reinforcements, reinforcements I don't want a tete-a-tete Reinforcements, reinforcements Let's reach accord, and ink a pact Then, please dismiss your regiment Edited by omphaloskepsis - June 06 2023 at 05:39 |

While I do not disagree with what you say here, all I meant to say was that when I see an artist classified in any of those three subgenres, I know exactly what I'm going to listen to. Crossover is basically eclectic light, more or less. I don't have a problem with it.

^ I never know what to expect when I delve into Eclectic Prog, which is part of what makes it eclectic. There are some Eclectic Prog artists I Love, such as Steve Hackett, but then there are other Eclectic Prog artists that I've never managed to Acquire the Taste for, such as Gentle Giant for instance.

Propaganda is the only Sparks album I ever bought, mainly on the strength of this song... But then I heard B.C. and wished I'd saved my money. |

A hardy perennial favourite from Brian Eno, mainly remembered as the theme tune to the BBC 2 arts programme, Arena. |
