After a thread about Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin (The Big Three of pre-'80s Hard Rock / Heavy Metal), I think it'll be quite interesting to have a look at other of the Hard / Heavy pre-'80s more or less big ones. So, who are they and what are your fave pre-'80s albums of theirs? My are: Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond (1972)
Alice Cooper - School's Out ('72), Billion Dollar Babies ('73) Golden Earring - Moontan (1973) Groundhogs - Split (1971) Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny (1976) Scorpions - Lonesome Crow (1972) The Stooges - Fun House (1970) Uriah Heep - Look at Yourself (1971) The Who - Quadrophenia (1973) Edited by David_D - May 20 2023 at 04:46 |

Flower Travellin' Band - Satori, 1971 Jerusalem - St. 1972 Icecross - St. 1973 You should check out the Swedish band November as well. Three very nice heavy/progressive rock album from 1970, 1971 and 1972. I don't own them myself, or know them all that well. But heard enough to know that it's pretty great stuff.

Unpopular opinion: IMO in the 70s heavy metal didn't really exist yet. At that point it was all still slightly beefier hard rock. Also, I think the production techniques of that era weren't super well suited for heavy music. Great heavy productions, in which you could really feel that rock solid metal weight, started developing in the mid 80s. The sound of metal how it's recorded/produced today would show its true early form in the 90s IMAO.

You are not wrong. ![]() For a while in the 70s, they terms hard rock, heavy metal, heavy rock were interchangeable, used to describe the same thing.
It was I guess in the second half of the 70s that heavy metal began to shape up for real, with bands like Judas Priest, Motorhead, Rainbow and the rise of NWOBHM. Twin guitar playing of Judas Priest and Thin Lizzy will be a great influence on bands coming up in the 80s. Also punk gave metal a boost as well. |

What we consider heavy or metal will obviously change over the decades. But I'm not a big fan of this revisionist way of looking at our near history. Black Sabbath were heavy metal in 1970 and still is. It's the birth of a genre that has changed how it sounds and partially what it means. Just like everything anywhere always. The true origins remains the same nevertheless.

true ![]() Also when I say heavy metal, i mean the traditional kind. The genre has even had a revival in recent years, it's named NWOTHM (new wave of traditional heavy metal).

I agree about no "proper" Metal, it just partly changes its character over the years.

What Black Sabbath played almost from the very beginning was stylistically seen different from Hard Rock.

I know. It's more Heavy Metal than Hard Rock, but The Number of the Beast is such a classic album that I didn't want to leave it out.

Now, I got your point, and it's a good one. Neverthereless, my impression is that the most common understanding of Heavy Metal today is as the style mainly invented by Black Sabbath, and with Judas Priest as the main founder of the genre. |

That's not an unpopular opinion, it's a largely correct one. But it's simplistic-- Listen to early Judas Priest, even Boston's first two. Those albums provided as much of a blueprint for metal as anything Ozzy, Iomi, & Randy, or Steve Harris & Dave Murray did. It just hadn't evolved and wasn't hitting you over the head with cold chunks of metal yet. Edited by Atavachron - May 19 2023 at 23:46 |
