STEVE HUGHES Not to be confused with the Aussie Thrash Metal drummer or the stand-up comedian of the same name, Steve Hughes was previously the drummer with Big Big Train. Steve's first three solo albums were all roaring full steam ahead and showed so much promise, but sadly, it's been downhill all the way on a steep gradient since then, with his last six albums being left stranded in the sidings and sounding about as appetising as a stale British Rail pork pie in cattle class. The three "Channellings" albums sound like elevator musak at best, and the five "Themes" albums are listenable, but at the same time, instantly forgettable, making Genesis' 1980's output look like masterpieces by comparison. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - May 09 2023 at 05:42 |

THE INNER ROAD The road less travelled... The Inner Road are slightly off the beaten track, so no surprise if you've never heard of them. They're a symphonic Neo Prog duo who compose mainly instrumental music with the occasional heavenly choir providing angelic backing vocals. All they need now is a lead singer - preferably female - for that little bit of extra mileage. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() By the way, if you want to see New York City as you've never seen it before, then take a look at the 75-minute video for The Inner Road's Sanctuary album.

Neo Prog Britannia THE INSTITUTE OF MODERN LOVE A short-lived institute, even by Neo Prog standards. The Institute of Modern Love have been around for over a decade now, but they've never quite gotten around to recording a full album, leaving us with a 5-track, 24-minute-long promo EP, which is all there is and maybe all there ever will be - which brings to mind Led Zeppelin for some strange reason. ![]() ![]() |

Neo Prog Britannia IQ Are You Sitting Comfortably? Then I'll begin with some Tales from the Lush Attic. IQ were one of the original "Big Six" in the early 1980's Neo Prog movement (the other five bands being Marillion; Pallas; Pendragon; Solstice; & Twelfth Night). Until recently, Neo Prog was as much of a mystery to me as the mysterious Dark Matter which is thought to account for approximately 85% of the matter in the known universe. In The Wake of listening to all of IQ's (mostly) superb albums though, they gradually broke down my Resistance to Neo Prog. Many modern prog bands have sunk without trace in the deep blue Subterranea, or fallen by the wayside on The Road of Bones, but IQ have gone from strength to strength with the release of possibly their best album Ever in 2019: Resistance! IQ are quite possibly one of the greatest Neo Prog bands Ever (with the possible exception of the inferior Nomzamo album) and I'll be listening to IQ's albums with increasing Frequency from now on. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - May 14 2023 at 03:38 |

JADIS Ship Ahoy! Stand by for some nautical Neo Prog from this Southampton-based band, which includes honorary member Martin Orford on keyboards, when he's not working with IQ. Jadis are named after a character in C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". I know what I like in my wardrobe, and that's shelves full of Neo Prog CD's, but the reality is, my entire Neo Prog collection (consisting of four Marillion albums) is far outnumbered by my eleven Genesis albums (including Calling All Stations). Anyway, when you're tired of Genesis, why not sample some Medium Rare treats from Jadis, with their latest studio album being as good a Starting Point as any.

JANISON EDGE An outstanding one-album band with an edge over many of the better-known Neo Prog bands, mainly due to some stunning keyboard wizardry and the soaring, honey-voiced tones of singer Sue Element. Janison Edge consists primarily of members of various other notable bands which reads like a veritable Who's Who of Neo Prog, with Sue Element being the only member who has no earthly connection to another band. If you like female-fronted Neo Prog bands such as Magenta, then I'm sure you'll enjoy The Services of Mary Goode too. It's very unlikely there'll be a follow-up album after all this time, so best make the most of this one, as that's all there is and it's rather Goode too. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - May 18 2023 at 01:22 |

IAIN JENNINGS You may know Iain Jennings better as the keyboard player with Mostly Autumn - the best Neo Prog band there never was - or you may not know him at all. Either way, Iain decided he needed some Breathing Space away from constant touring and recording with the band, and following a well-earned break on the tropical island of Hiatus, he came up for air with a whole decade-worth of four critically-unacclaimed solo albums, which may have fallen below the radar. Until now, that is. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - May 20 2023 at 02:14 |

TONY KAYE A keyboard player extraordinaire who's been with more bands than I care to mention, most notably a member of YES from 1968 to 1971 and then again from 1982 to 1994. Tony Kaye's long-awaited solo debut "End of Innocence" is a heartfelt 20th anniversary tribute to the victims of 9/11. This powerful and emotionally uplifting album is a musical tour-de-force, sounding like no Neo Prog album you've ever heard before or will ever hear again, so why not sample some tasty special Kaye today.

KINO * What do you get if you combine members of four of Britain's premier Neo Prog bands (namely, Arena, It Bites, Marillion & Porcupine Tree) altogether into one band? You get Kino - Britain's answer to Transatlantic - who've struck it lucky in the lottery of life with two albums full of winning numbers. ![]() ![]() ![]() * Listed as Prog Related on ProgArchives.

KONCHORDAT In ecclesiastical circles, a concordat is an agreement between the Vatican and a government whenever the Pope wishes to pontificate from on high. When it comes to pontification regarding our firmly held views in the world of Progressive Rock though, it's unlikely we'll reach a concordat any time soon. I think you'll agree though that Konchordat are a pretty good band, even if Neo Prog is not your cup of tea. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - May 23 2023 at 04:20 |

LANDMARQ A band that's gone straight to the top of my list of favourite Neo Prog bands! Landmarq were led by blonde bombshell and incredible singer Tracy Hitchings until recently, when she very sadly passed away at the tender age of sixty. She's now up there somewhere entertaining the angels. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - February 03 2025 at 15:06 |

LEGEND Is there anything more exciting in the wonderful world of prog than discovering a "new" female-fronted band that you never even knew existed before? That's certainly the case with Legend, who cleverly combine Paganism, Folk and Neo Prog into a unique style all of their own, bringing to mind delicate shades of Cyan, Magenta and Mostly Autumn. You can almost picture this merry band of tree dwellers dancing naked in the forest with the moonlit knight. Legend have been around for over 30 years now - including a 15-year hiatus - but for most of that time they've remained unknown legends in their lunchtime. Who knows though, if Legend make another comeback, in another 20 years time we may be saying Howe can they be the same band we once knew and loved when they only have one semi-original member remaining!?? Sound familiar? By the way, if you have a preference for female vocalists who wail like a siren, then you'll reach Wuthering Heights of Cloudbusting ecstasy with Legend's latest album. Just imagine Kate Bush singing on the best Neo Prog album you've never heard. Wow, Oh wow, unbelievable. Wow, Oh wow, she's incredible! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - May 30 2023 at 12:48 |

THE LENS You'd need a photographic memory to recall that The Lens were around in the late 1970's, when it was a case of blink and you'll miss them. The Lens were the early forerunners of IQ, featuring none other than vocalist Peter Nicholls and Martin Orford on keyboards where the focus was clearly on excellent musicianship. We now travel in the TARDIS over twenty years into the future, when The Lens finally got around to recording their first studio album in 2001, consisting now of a duo of Martin Orford and multi-instrumentalist Michael Holmes. When The Lens regenerated yet again - just like Doctor Who - nearly a decade later, Michael Holmes was the sole remaining focal point of the "band" as performer, composer and producer. If you're looking for the Best of British Neo Prog, then you've come to the right place, and for those who recall the magnificent music of German composer Manuel Goettsching, the mainly-instrumental Regeneration album is very reminiscent of Ashra - only better! ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - May 27 2023 at 04:30 |

Neo Prog Britannia FRANCIS LICKERISH A renaissance composer who's well-versed in classical music theory, which is very evident in his Far and Forgotten symphonic masterwork, From the Lost Lands, where you'll hear more violins, cellos and operatic sopranos than in the Last Night of the Proms. In fact, this grandiose and spectacular album of Symphonic Prog is loaded to the brim with more orchestral pomp and ceremony than Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance march. Francis Lickerish is probably best-known for his work as the guitarist with The Enid, but he's added allsorts of other strings to his bow since then, having worked as a counselor and group therapist for many years. If it's music therapy you're looking for though, then look no further than Francis' first four magnificent studio albums with The Enid, which are generally regarded as their best. Francis Lickerish made a very welcome return to the world of music in 2009 with his magical Prog Folk project, Secret Green, before going onto even greater things with his legendary From the Lost Lands album in 2012, which sounds like a long-lost soundtrack to an imaginary epic fantasy movie in the Lord of the Rings film series. Okay, so it's not Neo Prog as such, but this album was just too good to overlook. Secret Green's To Wake the King isn't a good album though. It's an outstanding album! And so, with eight varied albums to choose from, why not sample some Lickerish Allsorts today. They're rather tasty. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Enid with Francis Lickerish ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - May 28 2023 at 09:26 |
