I have some other Spanish movies on my "to watch" list, and I didn't include them as I can never know that they also have some twisted plots for certain without seeing them myself.
"
As a side note, La cara oculta is not "pure" Spanish cinema, yet it is not that outplaced in this context, I think.

Do you have a favourite flick among these? Beer

I'm sorry, I haven't seen any of the above, but if you'd like a recommendation for a great twisty-turny plot Spanish film, then try this:

The Night Of The Sunflowers: Jorge Sanchez-Cabezudo (2006) I don't think you'll be disappointed...

^^ It's actually really very good.

If you'd like a great twisty turny from a Swiss director, then try:

The Silence: Baran Bo Odar (2010)

I watched both Sunflowers and this in close succession and I can promise you, both films will have you glued throughout.

Hehe, you got me here too: I don't think I've seen any of these films. So, if you don't mind, I'll also go for some surprising twist-'n-turn recommendations:

A couple of films by Julio Medem, but especially La ardilla roja and Tierra - both wonderful and surprising films.
If you want it more baroque go for the films by Alex de la Iglesia. My favourite of his is Balada triste de trompeta (a bit heavy, maybe, but splendid cinematography and a real inventiveness), and I think you might like the more gothic Las brujas de Zugarramurdi.

When I got time I'll try to check out some of the films on your list...

^ Thanks Kees. I'll check them out and then most probably watch at least some of them.

Frankly, I'm not a big fan of watching movies with subtitles, and I watched most of the ones on my list with English dubbing. Yet, I always can make exceptions if I'm intrigued by its introduction text. I'll likely do that with both your recommendations, as I fear such dubbed stuff are hard to find if the movie is not mainstream.

The ones on my list... I didn't give any of them a 9/0 or higher, but I really think that they are entertaining.

I wanna recommend (both of) you a twisty movie too, if you haven't watched it yet. Ne le dis a personne (Tell No One) - France/UK.

As you might guess, I'm more into "unrealistic" stuff; fantasy, some say. Tongue Most of the movies on my list are rather "mainstream", considering that they are not American films. Whilst, I can come up with plenty of "obscure" (even art house) stuff too, yet I assume that they wouldn't interest you.

^^ Thanks for the recommend. I remember seeing Canet's follow-up, Little White Lies, which was a very popular mainstream film in France, but I didn't enjoy it very much. Generally speaking, I am more art house in my persuasion and the two I have recommended to your are fairly mainstream for me, but I did enjoy them more than I thought I would...

^ You're welcome. Lest it could be misunderstood, the "obscure" stuff I mentioned that probably wouldn't be your cup of tea are not because they are obscure, but because they are "fantastical". As far as I've observed, you both like realistic films. I recall you mentioning your interest in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's cinema and a couple of other "realistic" films, and I'm blatantly sure that suitkees hates fantasy stuff and very selective even in sci-fi.

Yes, for me, Ceylan is one of the world's finest auteurs working today, but I know he isn't your cup of tea, as he can be glacially slow. I was wondering why you specifically mentioned Spanish film? Is this something you are into at the moment? Of course, the greatest Spanish film ever made (in my view) was Erice's Spirit Of The Beehive... but that's not something I'd recommend for you necessarily.

You're quite right: I'm very selective in sci-fi (not at all overwhelmed by Star Wars or Star Trek thingies, e.g. but I love 2001 or Arrival, e.g.) and it is not that I hate fantasy, I'm just completely untouched by it when it is in the vein of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Avatar or these kind of things. But, I recommended you especially Medem and de la Iglesia's films because of the fantastical (surrealist/magical realist) elements they have in them. And The Witches of Zugarramurdi is also hilarious!

BTW, Ne le dis a personne is indeed a very good film, but it's French, in this Spanish thread. Wink
Going French, you might like the films by Dominik Moll (I'm thinking of Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien or Lemming, especially. He has a new film out which seems to be very good, but I haven't seen it yet).
And indeed, I (also) love most of Bilge Ceylan's work!

Lol, this thread has veered into some weird but amusing domains. LOLHug

Jared; Ceylan's work could be entertaining for me, IDK, but I'm not really interested in Turkish films that much, as I'm a Turk. That may sound bizarre, but I'm interested in "alien" cultures as I'm already experiencing the Turkish culture in real life. That is just my preference. And that's also why I'm more interested in imaginative and "fantastical" stuff. I like what I lack in real life. I hope that makes sense.

There is not a particular reason fof this poll being about the Spanish flicks, yet there's a motive for my part, albeit not planned beforehand. Yesternight, I had watched Hogar (The Occupant) the first time, and today this idea popped into my mind.

Kees; I also recall that you like Ceylan's work, but forgot to mention it. Thanks for your well thought out recommendations, again. I'll have a look at those. Yeah you're quite right that my recommendation is in French. But Jared started this! Or was his recommendation "The Silence" a Spanish one? Party

Hi,

Bummer ... I can't find any of these films around here ... and the USA makes a point of hiding all European film regardless ... all the TV this and that in America are horrible and continually refuse to help.

I'm kinda stuck with the Spanish stuff in the 90's and then 2000's ... since so much of it was represented here in Portland on the Film Festival where Senor Almodovar helped court in his skirts and champagne flutes to the adoration of the many Portland nouveau-riche community that had to be a part of anything when "famous" folks were in!

But there were some far out things ... El Maestro de Esgrima is still one of my favorite films, even though it is impossible to get a CD that has it with the English subtitles, as all of them are f**king European, where the majority of sales are not ... these folks still have not learnt what rock music has learnt many years ago, when the "British Invasion" came on, which also included, film, theater, art, literature and more ... so Europe not opening up to the American market are hurting themselves.

There are others ... Carlos Saura ... Vicente Arante ... Fernando Trueba ... as some examples, but that's the extent of my Spanish viewing other than Luis Bunuel, of which I have probably seen more than most.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I'm not complaining that no one is either interested in or knowledgeable about my list (The people posted here should be among the latter.)

Though, I'm a bit surpriesed, TBH.

I'm not complaining, as this has been a very fruitful flow of posts for me. Lots of movies to discover out of the recommendations!

Hi,

No complaints ... it's just that availability in America of a lot of European stuff has gotten completely ridiculous, with Netflix, Hulu and boobaloo, Pornaloo, Bitchapp, and many others "creating" their own material and dumping all the other stuff ... in the end, it really hurts the "world market" thing, and the sharing of cultural values ... I get tired of the semi/fake Italian stories in Netfish, that make it look like they are telling you some part of history ... and it's just another Hollywood production without meaning or artistic value!

I have not seen a whole lot of European things in the last 10 years, the time when the Internet has gotten bigger better and worse at the same time ... but getting some of those foreign films is tough at $10 dollars per month for each different group that shows one film, and I don't see the point of paying that to watch a grand total of 2 films in 3 months!

So I rely, and hope that the Toob carries one thing or another ... but sadly, most of the stuff in there are copies of copies and you can't get the whole atmosphere ... here's hoping for a better, more positive solution for the future.

IMDB, by the way is a money ruse put together by two huge movie studios and they don't care ... "they have it all" and even though I have over 600 reviews and they are online, they couldn't give a damn and give me a discount so I would watch a few of the more unusual stuff they have ... they don't care ... it's either money or get lost! I've given up trying or giving them any credit whatsoever.

Spanish movies (and spanish-speaking movies - or South Americans) are generally my thing.

In the last decades, Spain's film industry has been +/- dominated by Almodovar, who has been a master at "twisted plots" (in his own twisted mind), but I guess you know all about ghim.

The Catalan Bigas Lunas was also a biggie, but I think he's too old to do more movies of late, since he died 10 years ago.Wink But I'm not sure I would qualify his movie scenarios as "twisted", as from what I've seen from his filmography, it's fairly straightforward.

My n°3 in importance (and my fave) is/was the Basque Julio Medem, who has done some very twisted movie, not especially in the scenario, but the use of flashbacks, that can make an ordinary story a real nailbiter. Anything from the 90's & 00's is generally really worth seeing ... But oddly enough since MaMa, in 2015, his latest movies haven't reached the capital of Europe.

Competing the top spots that I'm aware of, s Icíar Bollaín (I think she's also basque, given her name) , but I haven't seen much of her early career, but again her last two haven't reached my neck of the woods.

Also Andalucian Alberto Rodriguez, but he's more in the thriller/police movies.
Also Castillan Rodrigo Sorogoyen has had a few police/thrillers out in the last 10 years.

I don't know if that helps.

EDIT: Btw, I checked out most of your poll choices in RYM and IMDB, and I guess I'd want to see most of them.

.

^ Yeah Sean. That helps a lot. Jared, suitkees and now you helped a lot indeed. I'm not sure about moshkito's input, but I'll at least check the introductory texts out of the stuff (or the stuff of the directors) you all mentioned here.

You all are (including moshkito) quite knowledgeable when it comes to cinema. I'm not that bad at it either, yet I guess I'm much younger than all of you, besides I'm extremely picky and my "range" can be awkwardly random. Haha. There are some movies I like having zero reviews on the IMDb, even. Sometimes it is tempting to write one. Tongue

Thank you.
