Hetfield had his arm in plaster from a skateboard accident, so one of the roadies played guitar. Sadly, it was also only 6 days before Cliff Burton died....

If i remember right, James Marshall of Metal Church (then) stepped in to help. Also when Hetfield was recovering from burns, Marshall helped the band again.

you're probably right; I'm always so vague about such things... all I can remember is that within the space of a couple of weeks in Sept, Birmingham Hippodrome hosted Saxon's Innocence tour, Motorhead's Orgasmatron tour and Metallica's Puppets tour (I went to the first and third) very shortly after which, they stopped hosting any metal gigs!
