Another Great of the Greatest has gone: film director Carlos Saura... The Spanish Civil war and the Francoist regime left its mark on some of his major films like La caza (The Hunt), Cría Cuervos... but he was also much into music and dance: Bodas de Sangre, Carmen, Flamenco... If you don't know where to start, start with Cría Cuervos, but he made many impressive and just great films. |

so much sadness here... an amazing artist. an incredible director/writer who truly embraced his Muse, Terpsichore. no other director was so involved in cultura as Saura. an amazing body of work, all fascinating. CARMEN of course is superb. as is TANGO, GOYA IN BORDEAUX, SALOME et al. he embodied all elements of Spanish art. so much of his work is difficult to find in English language territories.

Hi,
One of my favorite directors ... here is a partial listing from the later stuff:
The later stuff has been really difficult to catch and I have not seen anything since "Goya in Bordeaux" ... I did get "Blood Wedding" and "El Amor Brujo", from what looked like a PBS showing was too long ago, and already these films were about dancing ... and how different they were. "Carmen" is in the middle somewhere, and it is also a very valuable and far out film ... "you dance with your eyes, not your ass!" ... and the film is all about that and then some. By the time he did TANGO, it is a visual sight and then some. I hope to catch some other films of his for reviewing and enjoyment, but it is hard to not appreciate how much this man loved dancing and how well he showed it on his films.

I like his first movie very much, "La Caza" (The Hunt) but could never get into any other of his movies, maybe in part because I don't like Geraldine Chaplin. A week before he died, TCM played a bunch of his movies, and I recorded them. Maybe I'll try with some other movies, but I really loved that first one and have been chasing it since.

Hi, I can not recommend one film over another ... however, CARMEN is a bit different than the usual story, and this version that relies on dancing, more than anything else, is strong. Things like TANGO is wonderful if you see it for the beautiful sets and the color. The music, after a while seems to me ... a bit the same ... I would have liked to hear a rock version, or even something different just for a variation, but in many ways it is honest and true to the tradition itself, as far as I can tell. The ones that stand out for me, and that is "Blood Wedding" and "El Amor Brujo" that are the very different ones ... BW is from the play by Garcia Lorca and EAB is from a well known composer named Manuel de Falla. Along with CARMEN, these might just be considered his best, although I have a hard time deciding which, although I love the CARMEN film and almost always list it if I have to put together a "top" something or other. If you like TANGO, I would also recommend Sally Potter's THE TANGO LESSON, which even includes various well known names in the tango at the time. In some ways, it is more enjoyable, as it explains the dance and its movements. Edited by moshkito - February 15 2023 at 13:47 |
