I understand the logic behind not being able to play it often, but I think I enjoy buying for the sake of buying.

I almost only buy CDs when I'm not satisfied with albums in their original versions and want to listen to them skipping some tracks and/or playing them in another order than the original. I can do that with my programmable CD-player, and do it mostly with modern albums.

I’ve become a lot like Jośe.
I buy albums that I will truly listen to and have replay value. Now that inflation is a serious you-know-what, I lean towards buying more high resolution CDs like blu/spec, UQCD , SACD and Blu ray audio. I get a lot out of these formats and they work very well with my equipment. More bang for the buck. Quality over quantity. Speaking of which. How many of you fine music-heads on here will be buying the new Riverside album? I know I will. Riverside is releasing a blu ray edition in ATMOS surround. I’m not passing that up. |

That part of your post sounds very good to me. Something else, for the sake of environment, the heavy vinyl should be skipped. It has in fact many disadvantages, and I really don't understand why the record companies keep on with it. With my more than 30 years experience as vinyl audiophile, I'd say that the sonic advantages of heavy vinyl are very small, and if any, the only people that can hear them are those with very good hearing, and only with very high quality systems. Besides that, I find the heavy vinyl too clumsy and not cool at all. The middle weight, 120-150g, is much cooler and if record companies want with their reissues of pre-modern albums compete well with the originals and early reissues, they should stick to that format.

^ Two of the best sounding vinyl albums I have are whisper thin and the the skinniest I've ever seen - The Blue Nile - A Walk Across the Rooftops and Hats, both on the Linn record label from the 80s.

I'll even say on basis of my experience that fewer albums give more appreciation. |

I just got my preorder from LasersEdge, hoping to spin it tonight/tomorrow. I was not liking the release Friend or Foe, too poppy sounding very 80s with the synth, it does sound like Ah-ha . I do want them to go back to SLS and Rapid Eye Movement sounds, these extreme changes are not sitting well with me. It seems like they are trying to copy what Steven Wilson did with HCE and TFB...... |

I'm perfectly fine with the 180g and 200g releases, mainly 180g is what is coming out. The only disadvantage I can agree is the albums are thick and take up more space, especially dbl and triples (like the recent TFK albums). What a thicker LP allows is a deeper groove to handle more low end signal, as well the record is heavier so it can reject more vibrations than the 120g versions. Back in the day, those very thin 100-120g records skipped a lot but mainly due to the very cheap and low end cartridges we could afford. Today cartridges and TT are much, much better the designs are so much better, that records I had play so much better nowadays as compared to what I had before. And they don't cost anymore really, again if you look at inflation calculator a record from the late 70s early 80's would cost what we are paying now, and those records were 100-120g, the price today is for 180g....So your getting more for same price or less.

But Catcher, do you have any idea about why the record companies still stick to the 180g-format? |

"Double" and "triple" albums, with 10-15 minutes on each side, are such a waste of plastic and almost like maxi-singles to listen to. The shipment costs are higher too. - These are the sure cases when I buy CDs.

Not sure what you mean 10-15 minuets on each side....? You might be thinking of LPs cut at 45RPM......

Even worse are those etched 4th sides. I mean just pack it with something or squeeze everything on 2 sides. The Tangent - The Music That Died Alone fits on one vinyl, 28 mins per side and it's great.

Exactly, and skip even a track or two if necessary - which I'd say is absolutely no problem with many modern albums. Edited by David_D - January 23 2023 at 15:18 |
