I have not yet listened to new one. But enjoyed their previous one, The Common Task. Some good 'avantgardish' stuff.

Actually, at this point of time only a few albums on my list are still some challenge for me to listen to.

Have your musical tastes changed or have you acclimated to what was once challenging music to you?

As a general answer to the whole question, both, even I guess that it may be difficult to distinguish between those two things.

I often listen to Radiophonic recordings of Delia Derbyshire which is probably not technically considered Avant-garde..but more often labeled under experimental and historically early Electronic Music. There are sections of Delia Derbyshire pieces that set off an Avant-garde vibe...not unlike John Cage or anyone else.

I listen to Pauline Oliveros, George Crumb, and several others who have experimented in producing a sound or style of writing that is considered to be purist Avant-garde.

That particular style of composition turns up in the music of Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic, Miriodor, Rational Diet, and many other Progressive Rock bands.

The Avant-garde music of the 20th century seemed to be influenced by Bella Bartok when it came down to creating notation in dissonance. As people like Harry Partch is not directly influenced by the composition of Bartok, but is utilizing Bartok's foundation for creepy melodies of dissonance.

I enjoy modern Chamber Music. I get a lot of enjoyment from the music of Ingram Marshall and John Adams. Although it is not classified as Avant-garde music..there are sections of it which are reminiscent of Edgar Varese composition.
