She got the mono version of Saucer (she did not know), I was skeptical at first since I don't have a mono cartridge (not really needed) but man this version sounds insanely awesome!

Before I bought this intergrated amp, I had an amp section consisting of not less than 7 parts!, as I used not only bi-amping but true bi-wiring, separate channel for bass, too. So my power amp section was two 2-channels power amps. They were also very heavy modified, mainly for more power, so the main transformers were put in separate cabinets/boxes - no tubes though.
Well, I was a truely fanatic audiophile at that time, and I worked as Hi-Fi engineer, so I could make all the modifications by myself. I built even my own MC-preamp on basis of the legendary Hiraga construction.

Then I got tired of all that gear, and it should be very simple. I got even rid of that superb MC-preamp, and began to use MM-cartridges (Grado's) - but I have to say that I've been very pleased with the sound quality and the simplicity of the new system, and well, my intergrated amp still weighs 16 kilos and is put on a marble plate/shelf which weighs something about another 10 kilos. Tongue

Wishing to be audiophile since teen years. I used to get the Stereo Review magazine as a teen, drooling over gear.
You don't have to have very high end stuff to be an audiophile, it means you just want to hear music at the best it can be.

audiophile

noun

au·dio·phile ˈȯ-dē-ō-ˌfī(-ə)l
a person who is enthusiastic about high-fidelity sound reproduction

Surely agree, and even not at the best but just like this definition says - back in time it was (also) called "Hi-Fi enthusiast".

When did you move to high-end?

So, what does your "system" consist of besides headphones, I presume?

High-end is relative to the time period......My father had a nice system, he was into reel to reel. It was a Pioneer tape deck, the rest was nothing spectacular but we enjoyed it back in the mid 70s just fine.

Once my kids were not needing me 24/7/365 to raise and feed them I could focus on my hobby. But I have always had a good to very good system, just never the time to listen and focus on it.
Now I do.....

I will certainly say so too, and that would mean relative to the price of the average system at given period of time. So today, high-end starts at lower system-price than for instance in the '80s and '90s.

Not sure I understand what you mean there? Are you saying the price of high end systems today is at the same cost as lower end systems of the 80's and 90's were?
I don't know about that. It certainly can boil down to what you think a low, mid or high system might look like. There could be price ranges that direct you or maybe it's purely specs and or hand-craftsmanship. I've seen $100,000 plus speakers that are stunningly handcrafted and although I've never heard them myself, I gotta believe they rock with the proper support gear and listening environment.

No, I'm just saying that "high-end" is relative to the price of the average system at given period of time, and due to the price of the average system today is lower than in the '80s and '90s (when disregarding the inflation), high-end starts at lower price than it did in the '80s and '90's.

For instance, my system has to be considered more high-end today than it was in the '90s, as the price and not least the quality of the average sytem today is lower.
