Great? No, but I'm glad you like Saga. They have their moments, but in no way are they on the same level as Procol Harum.

Procol Harum were Gods. Saga are mere mortals.

Ok. You didn't actually answer my question but I'll assume you've heard enough to form such a steadfast opinion. Btw, I like Procol Harum too.

I did answer you. I said "they have their moments." But I am much like Rossini giving his review of Wagner: "Wagner has beautiful moments but awful quarters of an hour."

^Saying they have their moments doesn't answer my question of "how much Saga have you actually heard" but whatever.

No comparison. Procul Harum were innovative and original, Saga are great musicians playing generic music.

Saga, in spite of their late start, should be mentioned in the same breath as Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, etc.
Procol Harum (really the Gary Brooker Band with a revolving-door line-up) had a few great moments over the years, but could never get out from under "A Whiter Shade of Pale".

Had some time to kill so I listened/sampled several Saga lps..... Silent Knight, Worlds Apart, Generation 13, and Trust. Trust was the best one to my ears... very proggy at times and some interesting tunes.
I think they are more neo prog than crossover though they straddle both genres.. I hear Styx, Pendragon, Arena, IQ, even some Supertramp , Marillion , and Magenta. They aren't copying anyone but those influences seem present to me. I still like that older retro feel of Procol but I can see why people who like neoprog or melodic proggy hard rock would like these guys.

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes I feel like people just automatically go with who they are the most familiar with (which is often the band they "grew up" with) without giving a fair listen to the other band. However, I don't feel it's fair to imply that Saga were influenced by Pendragon, IQ, Arena, Magenta or even Marillion when Saga came before any of those bands (and by at least three years in terms of when their first album came out). If anything those bands were influences on Saga and not the other way around.

Both equally. Two very different bands though, apples and oranges. PH was mostly active in the 70's (their biggest and best output), while Saga is more 80s-90s, in my opinion. I've enjoyed both bands, and can't put one above the other. Not worth trying to compare. Even putting my favorite PH (Grand Hotel) vs. favorite of Saga (either Silent Knight or Worlds Apart), still too different.
