Message from the U-Bahn (or German underground)..... Sorry if I've been neglecting this classic German prog blog of late, but the last six months have literally flown by since featuring Lucifer's Friend here previously. And while we're on the subject of Lucifer's Friend, it's My Turn To Remember John Lawton, who's probably best-known for his three heap-good albums with Uriah Heep. Anyway, now that I've finally wrapped things up on my Prog Britannia blog for the rest of this year, that will hopefully Free Me to spend more time on this blog and the message is that Krautrock band Message are coming up here next with some Astral Journeys in the sphere of Psychedelic/Space Rock.  Maybe Tomorrow, When the Dawn Anew is Coming, I'll be back here with their first of seven albums.

Krautrock: The Rebirth of Germany

"From 1968 - 77 German bands like Neu!, Can, Faust, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk looked beyond US/UK rock 'n roll to create some of the most original and uncompromising music ever heard. They shared one common goal. A forward-looking desire to transcend Germany's gruesome past. But that didn't stop the music press in war-obsessed Britain from calling them "Krautrock"". "Members of "Can" spotted Damo Suzuki behaving strangely in the street and hired him on the spot to be their vocalist, shoving him onstage the same evening with no rehearsals. Incredibly, actor David Niven came to hear them play, and they asked him what he thought of the music. "It was great," he said, "but I didn't know it was music." Suzuki doesn't remember, "because at the time I was quite stoned."" "This brilliant documentary examines how a radical generation of musicians created a new German musical identity out of the cultural ruins of war – and music which inspired Bowie, Eno, Iggy Pop and countless musicians today. Hi,

Thanks for posting this ... I had been looking for it for a while, because some of the things stated by many of the folks are really important, and something that I wish that more "progressive" folks would listen to and relate to ... you had to do something different, and go against the grain ... and for me it was no DAW and then do something that was not like Western music at all ... which, of course, is the new schlagger ... rock music!

But above all, this whole scene also included many well known composers and musicians from the classical or experimental eras, and this is something that rock music is afraid of ... it takes it all away from the "common sound" that all rock bands have!

If you want to create, you, just about literally, have to rebel against the norm ... and this is the hard part to express here on PA ... about "new music", when folks are awaiting for Godot to come back to life!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Watched that special again about "Krautrock" and it amazes me how much it speaks for the way that one can create something "new" ... instead of the copy cat formats and constant sounds of so much music that is considered "progressive" and has no originality in it whatsoever.

It takes more than ... it's hard to describe it, but you have to have a sense of your own self a lot more than you would a sense about rock music, or some lyrics, or ideas ... in many ways, you create something new WITHOUT ideas, and the "ideas" come out of the new music afterwards by folks listening to it ... and its difference.

Wonderful special, and it is very important that they stuck to creating "out of nothing", something that too many rock musicians are not capable of doing these days. However, it is important that the "scene" also include film, painting and literature, so that one can have a better sense of identity and learning  and this is what so much rock music today, that is listed (check out all the 2023 listings!!!), is missing so badly ... because the best they can do is ... sadly ... the same thing! Schlagger!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Agitation Free - Malesch is my all-time favorite Krautrock album.  Don't get me wrong, I adore Can and Amon Duul II more than Agitation Free.   However, Malesch is creme-de-la-creme Kraut for me.Wink

I've been exploring Japanese Krautrock recently (Yes, there really is such a thing) and this is the night when the original German Krautrockers came to Tokyo in an album that represents the absolute creme-de-menthe of Krautrock for me. Smile
